  • Another little domestic Rock Blasting Job, this time the rock is piece of hard Granodiorite that is in the way of a new drive way. Today "Blaster Girl" had some spare time so she came to help her Dad with the drilling as I'm recovering from a finger injury which makes the job a bit more difficult than usual.

    Dave - I watch your work, and it is like art. Minimal charges with over fill to keep the force in the rock. [I am guessing] 1985 - I worked securing a site where blasting was being done. I saw rocks up 50 ft off the ground. This guy finally put a rock thru the hood of a foreman's truck. The cowboy was fired. Next group - I had heard of them, like you - minimal loading and it was great to watch someone who knew rock. i was going to clear 500 meters, as we had with the first guy. I was 30 meters standing beside the blaster. I felt this gentle rumble and the rock danced up. Thank you! Cheers!

    That is what family does... help each other. Next time adopt me and I will zoom down to Melbourne. I like using my hands to make bedrock vanish.
    It finally 'clicked'... the rock is Granodiorite. On another jobs I saw iron oxide staining on the weathered rocks. This form of Granite has some iron in it.
    Quick observation: the power of high explosives can't be overstated. When you can move a 25 ton pile of dirt used to contain rock frags 1 meter into the air in 1/10th of a second, that is serious power. When used right, explosives becomes a powerful tool.

      We have lots of Basalt and Andesite here. In most places it is weathered and fractures easily. Quarries rarely have to blast.

      @@demolitiondavedrillandblast Thanks for question. I live in Central Washington State, about 150 miles SE from Seattle. I lived in the Seattle area for years. 150 miles is a tiny distance for you. Living in Australia requires patience trying to get from place to place. Your trip times measured in days, ours in hours.
      I live on the 'dry side' in a rain shadow from Cascade Mountains and it is arid. Seattle is on wet side of mountains. They get lots of rain during winter. Of course, rain brings lush trees and forests.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  3 года назад

      In my early days of blasting I used blast mats exclusively and still do occasionally. It is a hassle moving them as I need to make Two trips or pay an extra person to drive the second vehicle. Other issues are that I would spend weekends repairing them and they don't really cut the noise down much and it is the big noise that brings complaints. The dirt is already on the site.

    When it’s not sped up by the magic of video editing, how long does it take to drill each hole?
    And how long does each bit last (and how much do they cost?). I imagine they must be a pretty fair expense.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  3 года назад +2

      Depends on lots of variables Michael, when everything is good and sharp, hammer in good order, enough air etc, takes about 90 seconds to drill a 32 x 500mm hole in average granite. The replaceable drilling head coats about $35 and lasts about 60 meters.
