  • Despite some cuts, performance worth a listen for its main characters. Nicola Ghiuselev, one of the best cantilena basses of the XXth century, sparkling Giovanni, striking Godunov. In 60-80s he often stayed in the shadow of other great Bulgarian basses of the time, very little remained on video. This is one of his less known earlier recordings. Other protagonists are interesting here as well. Details below.

Tnx, great singing - especially male characters. Ghiuselev and Berman impressed most - real bass/baritones yet with agility of light singers - like 10:27, 1:07:33.
54:34 is probably the best rendition I've heard, and the Berman's speed in Madamina!...

Wasn't the Prag version, without, for instance Il mio tesoro and In quale ecessi written for Wien? If it is, it's not so cut: about 15 minutes.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 Young Eberhard Waechter is the best Don Giovanni and young Joan Sutherland the best Donna Anna. Giulini recording still superb.

@@ivanatodorovic8073 Not even close. Waechter is one of the worst Dons ever. Pinza is eons better. And Ponselle is the best Donna Anna. The Giulini recording is extremely overrated.

@@xxsaruman82xx87 Pinza in the role is great fun, but is he aristocratic? Waechter was. Don Giovanni ( Don Juan) must be seen/ heard as a young man, seductive, charming and attractive, tender when needed ( La ci darem or Deh, vienni or Ah, taci ingiusto core) but also completely indifferent to the sufferings of others inferior to him. Pinza, with his big, marvelous voice and self confidence is sexy enough, but I prefer lighter voice in that role and more nuanced portayal of a character that intrigued Da Ponte and, what's more important, Mozart. So much that he wrote the greatest and most perfect opera of all times.
Waechter's voice is brilliant, bright and, by the time that recording was made, he was in a superb form, though his prime was somewhat short, that I am aware of...so sad ( at least for me and other Waechter's fans). I was a girl of thirteen when I bought the Giulini recording, it was more than thitry five years ago; the cast, the beautiful sound of the orchestra, the enegy of that ongoing tempo, the characters that came alive through singing of intelligent people with the voices reqired for the roles, made this performance the best for me. Fell in love with Waechter's handsome Don Giovanni instantly! I couldn't see if he was handsome, though, no photos back then, but it was evident in the voice. And I wasn't wrong! Waechter was a very handsome and good looking man.
I've never been able to accept Siepi as Don Giovanni imagined by Mozart. The singer must be young, or merely sound young...And again, for aristocratism, he simply isn't convincive enough. No energy there; the voice is great, yes, but somehow thick and heavy to be taken for a young, virile and fearless seducter. Siepi sonded more of a Don Giovanni's uncle.
Ponselle? Mozart stylist? I don't think so.
Overrated or not, the Guilini record is splendid. Full of humor, energy, elegance and never boring. Waechter is blue blooded and cheeky gentleman scoundrel, Taddei genial, Alva noble, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, well - the most intelligent and talented woman, Sciutti lovely and innocent, Cappuccilli perfect for Masetto and Sutherland!!!...sublime.
