  • Ever wondered about the Snakes to be found in Okinawa by night? Join me in this first episode of WILD OKINAWA as I delve into the jungles by night. These jungles are a veritable treasure trove of wildlife and as you'll see they have rewarded me with something truly unique. Having potentially filmed a snake species for the first time only goes to show that within these green rolling hills there still remain secrets to be unravelled. But what species did I encounter? Draw up a pew and check it out.
Given the potential that these are the first images of this snake species dictated the use of a very opaque watermark overlay. I've been burned in the past with people 'lifting' footage from my videos via RUclips so this time I'm taking precautions. I trust it doesn't deteriorate from your viewing experience.
Watch out for Part 2 in the hopefully not too distant future...
    Edit Update:
Mistaken Identity of what I thought was the invasive Green Anole, Anolis carolinensis appearing @6:29 is in fact a common Green Grass Lizard, Takydromus smaragdinus. My apologies for the confusion.

I truly enjoyed your video. I lived on Camp Chinen, for 6 years as a kid, until the Pentagon Papers had us leave. It truly was paradise and I still miss it. My mother would tell us to be careful and she called it Habu Haven. She didn't know that we explored the caves and jungle like kids do.

Always nice to get feedback from folks who have lived out here in Okinawa. Hoping to get out again soon to get some more wild content from the green heart of the island.

I'd prefer to camp in a location where local wildlife is plentiful than a sterilized safe bubble. For me camping is all about connecting with nature, on its terms.

We camped all the time out doors there in the Boy Scouts down around White Beach Naval Base. We did nothing to secure our tents, as we used the old hand me down Pup tents the Military issued, two halves snapped together to make a tent. When it rained the rain would run in under around and dripped right thru those canvas tents. As kids we worried more about those giant Yellow and Black (Banana spiders) which scared the beejeus out of us as we played capture the flag at night. The only thing worse to us kids other than running into the giant orange webs of the Banana Spider which could catch a bird. Those webs were strong was running into one of the egg webs of the spider and doing the heebee jeeby dance as all those baby spider came raining down.

Super impressed with this! Excellent dialogue, camera operation, editing, sound design, pacing, and tone. This felt on par with an Attenborough/BBC nature documentary which is a remarkable thing to pull off as a one man show! Much respect Mark. I'll be re-watching and studying this video in aspirations of emulating something half as good for my area. Such a professional production!

I know you are primarily interested in reptiles (I think), but Okinawa does have one of the largest bats (Fruit eater type) and they "hang" out in large trees in various places around the island. Okinawa also has a very large Praying Mantis species, I can remember one eating what had to be one of the biggest moths it had captured and the Mantis was happily eating it alive as it buzzed to escape. I do recall encountering three in the wild Habu's and each was very heavy body with darkish brown coloration and that distinct short tail and the largest was close to three feet but I'll tell you seemed much bigger in person .

Hi there, I'm pretty much interested in most everything that Okinawa has, wildlife wise. I cherish as much the interactions with frogs as I do with snakes as I do with Geckos, Newts and giant centipedes. It's all an amazing multitude of for the large part endemic treasures of Okinawa and in too many a case, endangered.

I’ve run into a few Habu’s while out in the bush of Okinawa.the spiders were pretty impressive also with webs I’ve seen 15 feet across. Not fun if you walk into one at night. Try not to sound like a 7 year old girl when that happens. If you can hold the screams inside, you pass. OH! The giant bats are crazy too! Wingspans of 5-6 feet!

This is truly spectacular. the footage is incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed your narrations. I will be on Okinawa Honto Island the first week of July this summer, and want to make a short film about the cultural and ecological significance of the Okinawa Habu. Do you reside on the main island, and if so would you be interested in meeting up at some point during my trip?

Great video Mark. Looking forward to your future videos. The invasive lizard you filmed, I believe that is actually Takydromus smaragdinus or the green grass lizard. I'm not sure if they are in fact invasive, however green anoles can be identified by their shorter tails and prominent dew lap.

While in North Okinawa I saw a solid brite green snake with a Brite yellow belly mating with another. The two separated as I almost sat on them. One had a punishment.
Can someone tell me what snake this was.
