RIP Richard Roundtree. You was a trailblazer and paved the way for FBA actors and actresses who are enjoying success in Hollywood today!! You will be missed!!
@Mike Mo they weren't ... this was a trailer for theaters only. They make different versions of trailers for different audiences. There would have been a more genteel, much shorter version for television. In fact, even in a theater, this only woulda been seen by patrons of other R rated movies, people seeing a G or GP (what PG was called in 1971) movie woulda seen something much more tame.
@@Marcel_Audubon Exploitation movies (of which Shaft is a famous example) were not ever aimed at a wide audience. They "exploited" niche markets - in this case urban, largely working class black Americans. Inner city neighborhoods had their own inexpensive "grindhouse cinemas" which were fed these blaxploitation (and some other exploitation genre) flicks. It is unlikely that many trailers were produced for a variety of audiences for such films.
@@ems7623 shut yo mouth! - that's just inaccurate. There were always multiple trailers made - you have to look no further than youtube to see the G rated version of the Shaft trailer. The content of the trailer was matched to the rating and time availability of the movie it was being shown before in the theater - so an R or M rated movie could be advertised to an audience watching a G PG GP movie without offending them or crossing the line with children present. And, of course, the tamed down trailer was always the one shown on TV. Same system still in place today. The original commenter deleted his misguided comment, it was about this version of the trailer being too crass for children to be exposed to on television, not about blaxploitation

Not even the remakes can top the original. Richard Roundtree is the original Shaft and always will be. To those who weren't around to see the original film, this film was the real deal back in 1971 and all through the 1970s. He actually brought Harlem back and defeated crime in his own way and didn't give a f*ck about the criminals he took down. Long live Shaft! R.I.P. Issac Hayes!!! You are the cats who made this film a classic!!
Good ole Sony, keeping the trend up with the Spider-Man trailers. I remember being bothered by how the homecoming trailer showed him in his homemade suit.
There was no Brother better to channel him than Richard Roundtree..I’m heading home now and I’m going to stream Shaft in tribute..I grew up in the 70’s as kid loving Shaft from the moment I saw it in my early Teens..and still have the original movie poster in pristine condition..Rest well Richard “John Shaft” Roundtree…” May God keep you..”
Very, very good filmmaking, editing, storytelling, lighting etc. The little Hayes tunes are just exquisite! Yeah, this movie is really smooth, engaging and entertaining.
I attended the blaxploitation film festival hosted by Kit Parker films and the Nuart theatre. Ron O'Neal spoke and talked about how he had auditioned for Shaft and then was called back twice then suddenly he was told not to return. He asked why and casting told him he was too light skinned. He took his anger and wrote superfly with Philip Fenty and the rest is history.
razorbackfilms WOW!! I guess in a way it kind of worked out for him in the end LOL!! I can't imagine ANYBODY else playing Priest---just as I can't really imagine anybody other than Richard Roundtree as Shaft (with apologies to Samuel L Jackson!!)
When you go into a film, you read it, and something clicks for you, and you like it, and you sign on for it; you go for it. You know that this is going to be a good film, and that is your best hope. Past that, it's a crap shoot - you roll the dice. #RIPRichardRoundtree
I saw the new one as it came on Netflix and I love Samuel L Jackson he kicked ass in his chevelle. Samuel l Jackson is a really funny and cool actor but nothing ever tops the real 70s version and style
Shaft! One of my favorite movies. Gordon Parks and Isaac Hayes (Oscar-winning soundtrack) were true artists of photography and music. Novelist and screenwriter Ernest (French Connection) Tidyman, a White guy, created Shaft because he felt it was time for a Black American hero onscreen, and came up with a sharp P.I. that all fans could cheer for. This is not "Blaxploitation." This is a gritty, solid detective thriller, full of action, and sprinkled with just enough macho humor for balance.
Shaft. You were the original badass. I hope people realize how special people like Richard and Pam Grier and so many other were in this genre. I walk by the Apollo theater every time I go to visit my brother across town. That’s my favourite part of the neighborhood. RIP Richard Roundtree. 🙏🏿👼🏿🪽

Luv this Movie the cast the music as a English lower middle class white boy who happens to be gay I wondered why I was always looking at Richard a bit too intensely. Wow what a man! Great stuff will never be equalled.
1:26 - anyone else find that exchange unintentionally funny? The way the mobster says it cracks me up. But then again this is "Shaft" anything is bound to be unintentionally funny. This movie was pretty unintentionally funny. At times silly - but does all that in a gangsta way nevertheless.
They actually did. The second film was SHAFT'S BIG SCORE (1972), and the third film was SHAFT IN AFRICA (1973). After that, there was a short-lived SHAFT television series (1973-74).

OmG, I so agree. A true classic, like crazy.
The heart has been ripped out of America since surveillance cameras clean sanitised areas etc .
Except this franchise has never had remakes. They were all sequels
@@kolbytriplett4644 There was a remake of "Shaft" in 2000. The title character was portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson.
And yet Richard played in all 3 as the original Shaft… even the 2000 one. They’re just sequels.
RIP the Honorable Richard Roundtree 🌹Hollywood and Film Legend 💗📽⭐️ Thanks for the memories.
This film oozes energy
Rest in peace shaft you will be missed 😢😢😢😢
The OG. Rest in Power, Richard Roundtree.
back when movie trailers showed the whole movie lolol
They now show plot.
