  • I don't suggest you use leafspring for an ABS Journeyman test, this was simply for my own practise, and to prove that scrap steel isn't crap steel.

    Almost heartbreaking to see a beautiful blade bent like that. But it passed the test with flying colours ! Are you able to repurpose that blade , or sell it to a tourist as a 'Genuine crooked knife' . ... twas a job well done sir !

    I've been wondering about " qualification " etc. Is it really important, and to whom?(other than personal reasons).Ive been in metal working for 30+ years,and usually " cert's" are not transferable...
    You do awesome work, hardly in need of approval by ANYONE..
    Thanks for sharing so us rookies can learn.

      Thanks mate, thw question of accreditation in the knifemaking industry is a hazy one. I think the most important thing is standing by your work, but if you hold a JS or MS rank, people will at least understand you have met the testing standards of that group, and given the stringency of the testing criteria for the ABS it is no small thing to hold that rating.

    Great video and great work but why do you care about the ABS? The whole thing seems antiquated to me and it seems to be run like some bullshit fraternity. Their stupid titles shouldn't matter to anyone. As far as I know Neil Kamimura doesn't have anything to do with them and he's doing just fine.

    • @SamTownsBladesmith
      @SamTownsBladesmith  4 года назад +2

      I'm not sure how they in any way resemble a fraternity, but for me personally I highly admire the craftsmanship of many of the master smiths and wish to prove to myself that I am capable of meeting the very high standards set by the ABS to hold a JS and MS rank. Neil's awesome, but don't think he'd share your view on the ABS. Each to their own I suppose, but sometimes a challenge from without is a better metric than a challenge from within

    This is my favourite video of yours I’ve watched. Seeing you forge that gorgeous knife from that off cut of spring just spun me out lol. I freaked out a little when you hit it with the chunk of wood to straighten it out. Then seeing it have a funky curve only to curve the other way when you forged the bevel was something special. It’s been too long since I watched a forging vid😆🤙🏽
