You need a place to live though, and apartments suck unless you like being stalked. Houses are horrible burdens, but people like the idea of having their own little place.
A home IS an investment, although it does require regular maintenance. But the best part is that you are not under the thumb of a greedy landlord who raises your rent yearly and saddles you with her rules and might fight you on required maintenance. Yes, while owning your own home you are subject to property taxes to the local govt in some areas, at least you have some more freedom to improve or remodel the property and live your life. Real estate has appreciated well over time too. Most people make money if they buy sensibly and live in the property more than 5 years.
The best way to fight back is to walk away. Years back I negotiated a new car with a salesman from $21,000 to $15,500, because I was ready to walk if I didn't get that price.

i dont think you get it, the jobs and opportunities in the 60s and 70s either don't exist anymore or don't pay enough to afford rent, utilities, and school.
The average person is working harder and longer hours yet they cant afford a home or a new car like people in the 60s-90s could.
