    Great video. I was in Moab on Oct 1 and did the Kane Creek / Chicken Corners Trail on Sunday Oct 3 in my H3. Of course we saw all the rain the week prior and when we finally went out on Sunday we were surprised at how quickly the trail dried up. We stayed away from Hamburger Hill but had a blast on the main trail. Camped out over night then headed back into town the next day. Great trail on the right day! Thanks for posting this awesome video! 🤙💯

    Awesome video! Here in NM they call the mud, caliche. (Not sure of spelling) when it rains, and it rains hard here, the dust turns into a slime that is worse than ice or snow. Like driving on haggfish. It becomes like quick sand also. As it dries it then becomes concrete and sticks to everything like glue. Pounds of it will attatch to the tires, and if you walk in it, soon your feet will have so much stuck on it that you got to walk with your legs way apart. Lol!

    Just back in from a month out that way. Respect for RTT'ing it and living in the elements. We did our trip the same. Ground and RTT's. Almost no way to avoid "bad" weather despite constant monitoring of NOAA Radio and trying to circumvent storms. Isolated "flashes" were all over. But we did manage to find warmth and sunshine here and there. It is a testament to why we all need to carry extra supplies, extensive first aid, fuel, and clothing for all 4-seasons (even in summer), the ability to be self sufficient. Sometimes there is a need to hunker down at, or retreat to, a "safe camp", and let mother nature do her thing. Take time and let conditions stabilize for a day or two, and assess trail conditions. Despite it all, we can still get blocked out or in, and need to be ready for that.
    We routed thru the Needles with two 4x4 camp reservations down there, Bobby's Hole to Beef Basin a couple days, watching the Abajo's for nasty weather and snow, circumnavigating the highway 95 washout to get to Hite for entry into the Maze (no fuel at Hite but we had extra to go deep out into Millard Canyon for three days on permits). We exited out via Hatch Canyon and Poison Springs which unknown to us, was clobbered in those recent storms. The Dirty Devil ford/crossing had just seen a flash flood, and most of the Poison Springs trail was g-o-n-e Gone ! We had to pick and claw for many hours and miles to get to the highway for Hanksville. Hanksville had seen floods and mud flows as well.
    We worked thru to Escalante' heeding NOAA warnings for Bryce and Zion areas and flash floods, keeping to the eastern edge of those storms. We found an awesome yet super sandy route wiggling south many miles (avoiding Cottonwood Canyon) to get to Kanab to supply up for the North Rim. We could see storms and lightning swirling around us, and did get a bit of rain. We broke thru some massive down pours on the blacktop, got out to North Rim country and spent 4 days / 3 nights exploring the "points". Then a very little used 30 mile 4x4 rout under a ridge, with views to Vermillion Cliffs to exit the area. Winds that night were insane. We ran through the fire burn scar north of Jacob Lake that had seen flash floods and mud flows making the trail interesting. Winter seemed to be moving in so we eventually made tracks to home bases from Page, to re-gear/re-rig for the winter season.
    A long winded comment, but just sharing that side of inclement weather related travel / overlanding out there. I always embrace the crap weather. Some of the best photography and scenery views and changes. And after all.....it's what formed and shaped that crazy landscape we all love out there; arches, pinnacles, hoo-doo's, canyons, slots... Experiencing those forces of nature gives you a huge respect for what's out there. We've all experience the heat, but extreme's; winds, rains, snows, flash floods..... has added so much to my 25 years of wandering that area. RESPECT for mom nature! Be safe out there ! Keep er' roof side up !

    I was there a week ago, October 12, and it turned wet again, and cold. The road out to Kane Creek Canyon has changed a lot. It used to be narrow sand past Hunter Canyon, now it's a wide graded road out to where Kane Creek turns off, but the surface is pretty rocky. They have built a lot of campgrounds out in that canyon. That crossing of Kane Creek used to be a deep dip down and a steep climb back up the other side. Now it's a very gradual approach. After it turned wet everything out there was soupy mud. I don't know how much heavier my JLU was after driving that road.

    I'm a huge advocate for always carrying 2 extra 80' extention cables at all times on my rig including 4 heavy duty snatch blocks. As well as scotch blocks and 40" anchor stakes some may say it's over kill but I tend to believe better prepared than unprepared. When it comes to mud a 1 ton can turn into a 5 ton in a matter of an instance and everything becomes extremely difficult and potentially more hazardous if you don't know what your doing. Safety is the most important thing to remember on the trail. Winching without experience or training can become very dangerous if you don't know what your doing.

    Suggestion to you if ever in that situation. Kinetic rope. Also, being that the axles were sunk in the mud, jack the rig up just enough out of the suction and put something like a traction board under the tires. I’ve pulled out 1/2-1ton trucks stuck just like that with a lil’ old 80 Toyota and using that method. Just a suggestion, great vid

    This was the first trail I ever did in Moab. I bought my JK and took my grandson with me out west. I hadn't even made the first payment on it yet. Only upgrades at that time was an aftermarket bumper and 33 inch tires but with the help of another guy and his wife from South Dakota, who had never done anything like this before, we made it thru. Scary as hell but fun at the same time. I've been hooked ever since !!!

    Having driven this road dozens of times I never once thought it was challenging. But then I have never driven it in December or January during the wet. All roads like this are impassable when wet. There are a bunch of easy tracks in Arches which are not passable when wet, as so many tourists have found out.

    Kane Creek Canyon won’t just kill your truck, it will try and kill you. Long story but back around 2007 we went in single vehicle in a rented Wrangler. Both my friend and myself have plenty of experience, but we had flown in. Dry afternoon, 6 miles in from trailhead we got stuck in a rut in one of the small crossings down in the bottom of the canyon. We tried for a couple hours to get out, trail was dead that day and no one else was out there. Then.....the storms came..... We were forced to abandon the Jeep and try to get out of the canyon on foot. All those small stream crossings were now 4ft deep and moving fast. By this time it was dark. One small flashlight, no cell service. We were very lucky to make it out to the trailhead where some kids were camping. They helped us get out. Next day it took two tow trucks to get the Jeep which had ended up submerged almost to the roof ( water was like 2ft deep when we left it). This is definitely not the trail to play with when rain is forecast.

    Kane Creek is definitely a fun trail... but not so sure I'd want to do it in the rain! Lol. If that was indeed a 'tow truck' stuck... I know who NOT to call! Haha. Cool video. I'll look for more from Moab. One of my fav spots to wheel/visit!

  • @jooooohn401
    @jooooohn401 3 года назад

    I did Kane Creek last april for the first time. I saw it was rated a 7/10 (hell of a sandbag there) and didnt think much of it going in blind. The pucker factor of seeing hamburger hill for the first time is something else haha. I was in my triple locked 80 on 35s (now 37s) and we just winched up the wall that you bypassed on the edge of disaster after failing to get up it twice. If you've got sliders that's the way to go, I wanted to do the bypass at first, but after seeing rig after rig winch up the ledge (a handful made it without) that was the much more appealing option. Hamburger hill is definitely no joke and I'm glad I went in blind because I likely would have wussed out and had I known what it looked like.

    I was on the other side of the crossing in the 100 series LC, trying to rescue the white jeep, this was cool seeing what you were all up to on the other bank, we had taken the back trail from canyon lands and low on gas, was great to see the loader show up...

    Unless we're in a dry spell, we have to deal with red clay mud down here in the Southeast all of the time. And when it's extra muddy, ya learn to just avoid it and come back another day... because if you try it, chances are you will get buried to the frame rails stuck. Those of us that have been off roading for a while know better, unlike that tow truck driver lol
    Great video as always🤘

    That's nuts! I don't think you have to worry about too many people following you through that. That Truck is Tough.
