    Absolutely without doubt on this - Pete Sampras was the king of Grass/fast hard courts!
    The greatest player I have ever had the privilege to watch on the Grass ( before they slowed the courts & used the Heavier Balls to slow the game down!) his game was a thing of beauty- savage power, grace, and athleticism all rolled into one package !! Sampras really was the real deal and one of the ALL time greats of the game if ever there was one!!

    every time I see Pete Sampras tapes automatically Michael Jordan comes into my mind.
    Skill, elegance, athletic ability and efficiency on the court are from the same very rare and precious fabric.

    • @Jonyvoid
      @Jonyvoid 3 года назад

      Not lost so much as driven out. Pete’s ground strokes were not good enough if he had to compete against today’s players. Maybe he’d have adapted but serve volley is gone forever because people and equipment has gotten to a point where it’s not viable anymore.

    The thing about Sampras's serve wasn't the speed but that it was almost impossible for the receiver to read until after it had left his racket. I've heard stories about when he was practicing his serve his coach would tell him just before contact with the ball what serve he had to hit. He gave nothing away in his preparation. Then there's his volleys & not rushing - God I miss that in world of baseline slugathons that make me fall asleep - and THAT single handed backhand. Sampras is sorely missed :-(

    • @user-be5qg7mr1s
      @user-be5qg7mr1s 2 года назад

      I agree but the same thing can be said during his time. All these net rushers at Wimbledon. EVERYONE serves and volleyed. It was so boring

    • @alanfrost75
      @alanfrost75 2 года назад +2

      @@user-be5qg7mr1s But it was only at Wimbledon. In the same way that anyone who wanted a chance to win would stay back at Roland Garos. Thats what made the 80s and 90s so great imo... there was room for every style. You had the French, which was for baseliners, the Aussie and US where you were on equal footing regardless of style, and Wimbledon which was for the S&V players. Today its 1 style across all surfaces (more or less).
      Thats also what made it so exceptional when someone like Agassi won Wimbledon. Or when Edberg made it to the final of the French.

    • @user-be5qg7mr1s
      @user-be5qg7mr1s 2 года назад

      @@alanfrost75 Its much harder nowadays to serve and volley because of racquet technology. You will get all court players but no one ever like sampras.

    • @alanfrost75
      @alanfrost75 2 года назад +2

      @@user-be5qg7mr1s Yeah, exactly. That's one of the reasons I don't watch any more. My fav player was Stefan Edberg, even more of a S&V player than Sampras.
      My point was just with respect to your comment that everyone served and volleyed. That was certainly not the case. It was very balanced in the past, with room for both kinds of specialists and all-court players.

      Nadal could handle the serve but not the follow up, imo. Not because he’s the best returner, but because of the distance he gives himself on the return. He’d get to the serve, but Sampras would eat all the returns easy
