- This is the car we inspected after long-term storage.
Before we just started it up, we did essentially a 100K service. Other jobs had to be done, but we wanted to cover the service items only in this video. That means a few off-shoot videos in the works.
Changing the fluids is a big part of a major service, and we go through that and every filter.
With any car that has been in storage and then goes back into service, things will come up. But after fixing any safety issues, tires, brakes, suspension, and such, we will see the car again in around 2000 miles or so to check back over the new work, change the engine oil again and re-inspect the car for new problems.

Wow, so it's really just another car. I was afraid to consider one but have always wanted one. Thanks for demystifying this for me. I have an opportunity on 1999 boxster base, w/ 142k for 4500-5000, he's asking 6000. It needs some work and major tune up. This just pushed me over the edge.l to get it.

Yes a lift is the way to go. Although you can do all of this work on the ground it is much harder and slower.

I have a 2004 Boxster S . I love that car because it never fails to put a massive smile on my face when I drive it. I treated it to a “ major “ service at my nearest Porsche dealership. It cost me £900 & that didn’t include new spark plugs or coil packs. They wanted another £600 + vat. I modified a torx key and changed them myself and she starts and runs beautifully. Good video. 👍👍

There’s a service bulletin on these cars that specifically states not to put any products on the spark plug threads.
Yes I am aware of it, it was put out because Bosch changed the thread design. However, when you come across your first spark plug that has corroded into the threads you will think differently about it.
But of course its your car and its up to you what you want to do.

Judging by the pile of leaves around your trunk I would say your drain holes are plugged too. You don’t want to flood the cabin and remember to do the front drains by the battery too.
We vacuumed out the car, yes there was a lot of debris
TOP TIP: Trombone cleaner is cheap and does the job perfectly. Used it on my Boxster and my Cayenne 👍

i enjoyed the video. Just wondering why you would not change the rubber seals in the spark plug tubes while you had the plugs out? They are notorious for leaking. And the seals are not that expensive. One other observation, you should check the pulleys when you have the belt off, give them a spin, checking the bearings. Just my two cents!
I'm a firm believer in if it is not broken then dont mess with it. Being that we are always working for the vehicle's owner and they usually dont have unlimited budgets means doing what needs to to be done and not doing what's not a problem. Yes in a perfect world where money is no object I would change Orings and seals out of an abundance of caution every time, however in a service environment that does not always happen. Of course if there are signs of leakage I will press it with the owner. Yet most times there are so many places in the car that need money spent that we have to direct funds to the most needy areas. Yes I agree with you and always spin all pulleys and check bearings when ever a belt is off. Just dont always show it on camera.

Who makes that car lift? Where did you buy it? I have a tiny 1 car garage and that looks perfect for my use. I want to buy a Boxster or a Cayman but to afford one I need to do my own wrench work. Gotta have a lift before I buy one.

Why did you not do the standard inspection of the oil filter housing and filter? That’s an important step that you omitted.

Not sure what your idea of a standard inspection of the oil filter housing or filter is. For me the oil draining will give a good indication of any particulates suspended in it. The oil filter housing is always washed and dried. Of course taking note of any excessive particulates. When it comes to filters unless I have a reason to I do not spend time cutting them apart.

Have one. However, because we dont do a lot of service any more it doesn't make sense to fill it with fluid that might be out of date by the next time I need to use it.

Question ! What kind Synge Engine Oil do you use for over 100,000 miles?
So I use Mobil one and instead of 0W - 30 I will step it up to 0W - 40, For a higher mileage car I may even go to a 10W-40 oil. Hope that helps

When should the IMS bearing be replaced? How to determine?
My thinking on it is only if and when it becomes a problem.
The exception to that would be if you were in that area for another reason like a rebuild in which case I would update it then

How much does it cost to get the service done ?
it can really vary depending on each vehicle. but you can figure between $800 to $1200.
