  • “My parents never even thought about climbing a mountain.” Yesenia grew up living in a small farmer’s cabin in the apple orchards of Oregon’s Hood River Valley. As a child, she played sports but never knew about outdoor recreation, despite being surrounded by Mount Hood and hundreds of miles of trails. Her first pivotal outdoor experience was going to Multnomah Falls, a roadside stop outside Portland. “I didn’t know what you needed in order to do that stuff. Did you need a permit, a ticket? It wasn’t until college that I realized that all the trails and outdoors were free for all of us to use.” Watch Yesi's journey to climb Mount St. Helens and pursue her American dream.

    Mexicans have a wonderful cultural heritage. Most whom I have had the chance to befriend in this country have been salt-of-the Earth kind of folks. Our outdoor community can only benefit from the diversity they bring to it. Thanks REI for sharing this touching story!

    Thank you, Yesi & REI for this well done, honest, heartfelt, and illuminating video! “All the gear photos in magazines were full of white people... and I didn’t know HOW to access the outdoors places” I can TOTALLY relate! I’m not Latina, but as a person of color who went to summer camps (sometimes on scholarships) as a kid, I deeply felt like the forest was my kindred place on this earth. But because I did not know how to access wild spaces on my own outside the context of my structured summer camp setting, my outdoor life was lost to me for over 30 years of adulthood. In this past year (2018-2019), with the help of RUclips and internet searches, I have re-discovered and reconnected with my heart’s outdoor passion. I slept in a tent for the first time in over 30 years this summer, and have been hiking local & regional wooded trails more & more regularly... AND, to celebrate my 60th birthday next month, I’ll be hiking on the Appalachian Trail! Thank you, Yesi, for all you do to help others embrace and lay rightful claim to life-giving, life-sustaining, beautiful outdoor spaces and sports!! 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

    What a great story! It's always interesting to observe that differences in mindset between generations within a family. Earlier generations focused on survival and building a better life which paved the way for new generations to see the world differently and participate in outdoor recreation.

    To see someone who always dreamed of doing something they thought they couldn't do and achieved it, because of what they been told what not to do because of what others say they can't be do to their race. I'm happy she's enjoying what she always dreamed of doing. *Just remember this don't let others control your life for there entertainment.*

    Yes, definitely! As an hispanic women I was inspired by my boyfriend who is Caucasian to seek the outdoors. I felt bad being the only Hispanic at a few hiking trails. Now I feel motivated to create new memories and encourage my family to do the same. It is so true, the outdoors culture is not as highly promoted in cultures among people of color. I hope this film inspires our future generations and community.

    This is something you don't often think about, and it's crazy to think that being a minority is what prevented Yesenia from enjoying nature as a child is heartbreaking. Nature is something that should be enjoyed by everyone and not because of color or race, because we are one people of the same race.

    • @cal1776

      hike bike climb agreed, some people won't let you look past the color of their skin. Sad

    • @drcav_photo
      @drcav_photo 6 лет назад +20

      I'm sure that people of color would love to "not put as much emphasis on race" but they are reminded of their race everyday by an America that is infused with racism at every corner and in every institution.

    • @hanys85
      @hanys85 6 лет назад +4

      Not saying this from a critical place, but where you're seeing an "emphasis on race," I see an appreciation for her culture and background. I mean that- not just trying to spin things. And I loved watching that bc I can relate to it.

    Great video. Goes to show you that her pre-conceived notions that it was only a "white" thing was false, and once she "googled" it, she realized that it was for everyone, she acted. Fantastic video for squashing racists views when she discovered that it wasn't just for one race, but for everyone, if people would just put in the work and research and get out there.

  • @mateuszmrowiec4265

    I really wanted to watch this video but when I hear that someone from South America felt not good enough for outdoor sport because 89% of models were white.. that just too much.. look at the market.. from where are the biggest outdoor brands?? All Latinos that I know of love climb and not because some outdoor models are Latinos.. just because they really love it! Take care and thumb down.

    • @hansonmphoto
      @hansonmphoto 6 лет назад

      Hey MatM I, curious, where did you hear that someone is from South America? I don't think that was in the film.

    • @mateuszmrowiec4265
      @mateuszmrowiec4265 6 лет назад

      Michael Hanson the film was from usa and the main character from country whe people are using Spanish as a first language. Personally when some one is making statements about gender or skin color as a main problem in there lives that make make me sad. Because we are all human beings if u let some one to influence that then it's only your 5hing to overcome. In school I was like that always feeling unsecured about myself because I let other people very bad people to use me and influence me.. but at some point you have to say now and realize that someone else opinion about you is not who you are.. right?
      All the best Michael!😊

      Mexico is in North America, MatM I. Yesenia, the main character, is from the USA.

    • @mateuszmrowiec4265
      @mateuszmrowiec4265 6 лет назад

      Michael Hanson yes I know😁 but I was more focussed on how she was limiting her live based on adverteisememt. And as I said México is Spanish language country with amazing culture to name only one thing.. día de los muertos. this approach to passing is so fascinating.
