It’s not heavy if you have the right truck, problem is most people buy a truck first before knowing what they’re actually going to do with it and then decide to buy a camper only to find out they don’t have enough truck….

For newbies, more weights are important here. Sellers tell you dry weight, but you need to know your payload and all the weight of the load. EX: Sure 610 starts at 1500lbs empty, but add around 150lbs/person, gas, 20lbs propane, camper batteries, 155lbs for 15gal fresh and 4gal hot water, 500lbs of food and gear for around another ~1000lbs-1500lbs needed on your payload. Check your payload, GVWR, rear axle weight rating and tire/rim capacity. It varies a lot.
I have an 04 GMC 2500 with 1600lb dry camper, 1100lbs people, fuel and stuff onboard, plus 200lbs on hitch it uses pretty much full 8600lbs GVWR, 2900lbs payload and 6000lbs rear GAWR.
Northern Lites and Bigfoot Campers are built well built but they do need maintenance even if molded fiberglass outside. Ex: They still need a full annual inspection; they need anywhere water can get in checked and repaired like sealant around penetrations or weatherstripping. They need to be properly winterized, and vent covers replaced if brittle, etc. I currently have a Bigfoot from 80s and briefly had a Northern Lite.

If an rv doesn’t have a toilet and a shower then they are pointless. Buy a truck and put a bed in the back then. It’s the same thing

the benefit of this setup over a larger towable camper which has a full bathroom, is your ability to travel offroad. its much easier in a truck camper. If you would rather stay in paved parks and have your own private bathroom, that's cool. But there are many people who are willing to trade a comfort like a shower for the freedom of exploration. Everyone has different priorities, therefore these are not pointless in general, just to you. Keep in mind this unit costs $60,000 and you can get a hell of a trailer for that money

@@MrPePeLePuoToo much for m but if I had the $ I’d love this. We are dispersed camping in New Mexico now for a few weeks. Totally free thousands of acres w/ no other people but we had to load up our side by side & haul everything in. If we had a truck like this it would be heaven. The $ saved camping on Bureau of land management & dispersed areas to be alone is worth a great deal towards this camper.

Hi- what heating system is it propane or diesel?

  • @sheilahenry7279

I think the money one could save by staying more remote (free dispersed camping & blm property plus, not having to separately insure like you do a pull behind would sway me a lot. Not $60,000. But a lot

      $55,000.00 for a modified topper? Sounds a little steep. My 2018 30' 5th wheel was $52,000.00.

Offroad models have lower payload as it puts higher loads on frame. 2500/3500 trucks used to not have an offroad package for this reason. I have 2500 4x4, locking diff, skid plates and 2800lbs payload on 8600 GVWR truck. If you off road I'd stick with pop-up camper or pop-up cap with overcab bed. 1465lbs has to include fuel, people, gear, food and camper. I'd look at the overlanders forum for advice if you want some help.
