    I was a sophomore/junior in high school when this show came out. I was one year away from going to the after football game kegger parties and our school had a 50s dance with the real Platters group. We learned to dance to 50s music in our pe classes. It was a real happening because our teachers were in their prime when the 50s were going on and showed us alot of enthusiasm. It brings back memories by the score

    • @webmasterd
      @webmasterd 11 месяцев назад +37

      Nope. Fonzie was in the Falcons when he first met Richie and his pals. After he left the Falcons he wore the windbreaker since obviously he wasn't in the gang anymore. Then later started wearing the plain leather jacket. he was always a high school dropout and they always referenced how Fonzie was in a gang before. That's how he already had his reputation of being tough. This was a flashback of Richie telling the story to Cachi because Cachi joined a gang and Richie was trying to talk some sense into him.

      I love how often Happy Days rewrote characters backstories.
      In a super early ep, they say Fonz ran with the Demons not the Falcons, and they definitely weren't a cut throat gang, they were just guys they went to school with and wore detailed letterman style jackets. Ritchie and Potsie actually beg Fonz to help them join so they can be cool and get girls, and its Fonzie who tries to dissuade them, but agrees.
      The early eps feel a lot more grounded, and I think the backstories feel a little more real, like Fonz probably was in a gang while he was at school and then cut out when he dropped out, which is pretty normal.
      That being said these Happy Days eps are fun and it's wacky sure but not bad, I just see the first three seasons or so as a different thing, and enjoy them for different reasons.

      When they had he “1 2 3 o’clock” song opening and Ritchie’s brother Chuck Cunningham was in it, and had more outdoor shots and was “American Graffiti” like, Happy Days “jumped the shark” long before Fonzie actually jumped the shark. He original show, a spin off from “Love American Style” was supposed to be Ritchie “centric”, but after season 2 decided to make it Fonzie centric. They also had Fonzie wear the windbreaker as they were worried about the leather jacket / gang member connection when the show first debuted and Henry Winkler actually being in “The Lords of Flatbush”, a Brooklyn gang movie, that literally came out the same year as Happy Days.

And I think they really ended it on a good note for the finale. I also remember it being a big deal, ratings here high, so many tuned in that night. My family gathered around the tv set and to the very end I felt like weeping like a baby. Lol. Whenever I watch it today and when Tom Bosley looks at the camera (something not common back then for TV shows) and says "thank you for being a part of our family. to Happy Days". This is around the time of the Korean War because at the start of the series Ritchie has an older brother, Chuck, who gets drafted to go to Korea and subsequently vanishes from the series. Now this makes me wonder... Most early bikers were WWII veterans who rode army surplus Harley Davidsons. Was Fonzie a veteran? He is considerably older than Ritchie and friends.
    Something to ponder.

      According to other commenters here, Fonzi was supposed to be very near or the same age as Ritchie et al. I can see how your theory makes sense otherwise, but I don't imagine that much logical thought went into Fonzie's image by the creators, I would think it was more a case of them choosing stereotypical characteristics of a cool character.

      That's been my opinion all these years. Lamer was when they had Fonzie move over Ritchie's garage. And then by the third season they barely even dressed like they were in the 50's. And don't get me started on Chachi. The live audience thing was a product of 70's sitcoms in general. But yeah, it wrecked the original tone of the show. It would have better to have cancelled the show after one season.
