Likes and Dislikes Dominicans and Gringos Have for Each other

  • In this Documentary Mr.T asks a bunch of Dominicans and Gringo's three interesting questions in relation to their likes and dislikes for each other's cultures.
    The answers you will hear should help broaden any open-minded person's understanding, of the different issues and opportunities that present themselves when a variety of different cultures are mixed together in a tropical location.
    You probably won't agree with everyone who's interviewed in this Documentary, but it should greatly inform you about what attitudes to expect from Dominicans, Haitians, and other foreigners.
    The main message of this video is definitely "If we can at least respect each other's existence and hear each other's viewpoints, then we can hopefully be civil and polite to each other, and maybe learn how to coexist much better" - Enjoy!

    Another great video Mr t. It's evident that both local a foreigners need and rely on each other. I have been there several times. Reminds me so much of my birth country Jamaica. I Hope both locals and foreigners will never let opportunities pass to always bridge the gap to better understanding of each other.

    As a Dominican born in DR but raised in New Jersey my number 1 complaint is the lack of English speaking people, i mean they are missing out on so much of english innovation, business, entertainment, all around awareness of what is going on outside of DR because they simply don't understand the language. Filipinos, Indians, even Chinese and Russians speak english at least all the young people under 40 yrs old, here when i say "thank you" to a young person they don't even know the reply of "your welcome". The main problem is the lack of english teachers and then the lack of who to practice what they learn so they will forget anything the may learn, they are afraid of losing their culture and customs. All the jobs for customer service phone operators go to the Philippines and to India a world away when we are only 2 hours from Miami and could have so many more jobs for our young people. The music, the acting, the political awareness and democracy awareness is severely lacking in my beautiful DR.

      As a Dominican my complain is about people who travel to another country and culture and don't speak their language and expect everyone adapt to his or her needs, I don't travel to any country and ask them to talk my language or expect American to act as a dominicans.

    Only one thing that crepes me out is the moto bikes. WOW. But its their country their ways of living their culture . I never see it as something I can change or need to change. I am the one who need to adopt to their culture. Not them adopting to me.

      yes there's a lot of angry foreigners here who's now got a golf cart stuck in their driveway which they are not allowed to drive on neither small streets or main roads. This sudden rule was forced into place after one accident. Stupid, as while hundreds of accidents happen every year involving motorbikes (with no changes) then after the only golf-cart related accident, the authorities punish everyone without giving anyone clarity of where they now stand.

    I think is the Dominican culture because even when they speak Spanish the majority of the Dominicans they don't do it with respect i can give a few examples when they call for something they said ... hey mira or hey tu ... so i think right way to talk to someone or ask for something is excuse me like disculpa or hola where is >???? I have a lot friends that they mostly the time talk to like that and i don't i care but it's frustrating sometimes specially in your own languages.

      Hi Gabriel. We're struggling with this and hope you can shed some light. I'm concerned with being extorted by police, locals and the local justice system in DR. My husband (US citizen born in Haiti) last visited DR 8-9 years ago. He had personally been harassed by police who randomly stopped him and had given them money and once a local tried to blatantly steal money from him while on vacation and he felt like he had no right. If we moved there, we'd most likely own property/car/health insurance and be legal. What are your thoughts on expats being extorted? Are legal Haitians subject to discrimination whether or not they have an american passport? Would you even recommend a Haitian-American to move to DR?

  • @PattiCake
    @PattiCake 6 лет назад +2

    At 20:51. he is totally correct. Here in the U.S. a politician was under fire because he said the same thing. The living and working in the U.S.A. a non -english speaking person should at least attempt to learn the language. I agree when you go to a country other than yours, you need to learn some of the language even before you get there. Why wouldn't you want to know what the heck everybody is saying. Some people can come and live and work here for 5 years and speak no english, or as I believe they are many times pretending.

    • @EducatedTraveler
      @EducatedTraveler  6 лет назад

      Hi Patti and thanks again for watching and commenting.
      I agree with you when it comes to folks who plan to work and live here. Just reflecting on my own arrival here, I knew only about 10 Spanish words, but I had the attitude that I "wanted to learn the language", and as you might have seen in my previous documentary, I now speak good "Spanglish" and will hopefully over time turn that into fluent "Spanish" :)
      Some stubborn expats still haven't bothered to learn a full sentence after 5 years here, and it actually handicaps things more for themselves than other people, so their loss.
      Take care, and please stay tuned! Brgds Mr.T

    One dude said that they are loving and caring people, but how haven't they shown that love and care to the Haitians who were both born and migrated there? They stripped the Haitians who were born there of their citizenship and deported many with and without legal status!!! It seems like their love and care only apply to foreigners who are bringing in money, which isn't genuine. Once your money runs so is their care and love! Many are heartless, I see the way they operate in New York City!!

    • @EducatedTraveler
      @EducatedTraveler  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Kenneth, and thanks for watching! You're making some really good points, even though we should never generalize. Like all shit-stirring Governments, in DR the make sure to indoctrinate the kids in school about their version of what happened in the past (which bottles them up with hate for the Haitians) and daily in the news they indoctrinate and fuel racism to turn their people even further against the Haitians. Then there's their corrupt Immigration who make inhumane decisions and often perform violent attacks on poor / hard-working Haitians in various communities here, forcing them into prison style buses and deport them to Haiti. 98% of workers seen on each construction site are Haitians, as the Dominican constructors and engineers want it this way to save money, and the work is hard, hot and low paid for 8-10 hours per day (something the Dominicans don't want to do).
      The big picture is that all this racism is fueled by their Government to Divide and concur - same old crap as seen in history
      "All Governments have failed us the people in thousands of ways, and should be removed!"

    @29:08 Haitians are known to do that. There a couple of haitians that live right next door to me and the do that. We spoke to themnto please stop and the continue. Some of them have no respect for others or themselves. they would throw shit in bags and throw it over another person's roof. Thats just disgusting. If that person really was dominican shame on that rat cause thats the first time I have heard someone said that.
    Mr. T if you lived in the dr for a while I hope you undertand that there is ignorance, but we dont want toblose our culture. Please understand that the haitians are a large minority and most are illegals. They impose there culture and thebact like the rule here. Its offensive and rude.
    Americans dont like when illegal mexicans come and, they have the right to deport any one theywant especially if their illegally.
    So what if the dr and haiti share and island. To the haitians please respect our sovereignty and laws. We dont want to become to
    He minority in our own country. Cayman islands and bahamas have the same problem and they are closer in hue to haitians than dominicans. Please understand . Im tired of people that go to the dr and talk about the haiti/dr issue if as if the know. Mr. T I dont mean you but there are many.
    Haitibhas received many hand oits over the years, billiones of dollars look at their country its a complet mess. There so many haitian americans abroad and they dont help them. They want to attack the dr and we just want to be left alone.

    • @EducatedTraveler
      @EducatedTraveler  6 лет назад +1

      Hola! Thanks for watching and commenting!
      The Haitians I've met here for many years are NOT trying to attack your country. Most Haitians find work in either construction, gardening or selling some small product, and they are all trying to make a better life for themselves and their families back in Haiti (same as Dominicans do when they leave DR to try their luck elsewhere). They do though mooch on your medical system which should be stopped (all folks should have to pay the same for hospital services - no freebie's. Then they'll find a Haitian Hospital instead for their child births).
      Even when here in DR legal, Haitians all have one thing in common - they are all paranoid about the police here who seem to have little other purpose to their day than hunting struggling Haitians and harassing innocent folks who's just looking for the next few hundred pesos. In general, I hardly ever see Haitians looking for trouble (most of them have enough troubles surviving). Let's look at who the true "shit stirrers" are - GOVERNMENTS!!! It's the old nasty divide and concur in action, and they do it in every country by spreading propaganda through their controlled Media's where they daily indoctrinate their nations people to hate certain folks, groups or nations, creating racism, bullying, Nationalism, passing inhumane laws etc... etc... and who gets to suffer? always the innocent people who are just trying to make a better life for themselves.
      The Governments use their various police and military forces to install fear in their adversaries and to hold the masses down from living prosperous free lives. Without all these corrupt and greedy Government parasites (whether Haitian or Dominicans) you would not have a problem with neither Haitians or any other National, and you would instead judge them individually based on their actions and attitude.
      Saludos!
      Mr.T
