The Hierarchy of Productivity: Getting Things Done

  • Perhaps you are interested in retiring early as a full-time investor?
    Maybe you need your business to become profitable in the next six months?
    Or perhaps you just want to nail that exam that you have in school, three weeks from now?
    These three tasks have at least one important thing in common - they become sooo much easier to achieve if you know how to maximize your own productivity. Productivity is defined as the ratio between output and input, and I will assume that you want to generate as much output as possible for a given timeframe - a few weeks, months, or perhaps even years. In this video, we shall have a look at five different types of activities, in something that I will refer to as the hierarchy of productivity, and find out how moving between these will help you in boosting your output over a given timeframe tremendously.
    ---
    My main tool for fundamental screening and analysis of stocks: app.tikr.com/register?ref=tsi
    (If you sign up I earn a small commission)
    ---
    Timestamps in the Hierarchy of Productivity:
    00:00 Intro
    01:25 Leverage
    04:29 Primary
    06:20 Support
    07:39 Break
    09:34 Timesink
    ---
    My goal with this channel is to help you make more money and improve your personal finances. How to become a millionaire? There are many ways to get there - investing in the stock market, becoming a stock trader, doing real estate investing, or why not becoming an entrepreneur? But whether you are interested in how to invest in stocks or investing strategies for creating passive income with rental properties - I hope to be able to provide you with a solution (or at least an idea) here. Warren Buffett - the greatest investor of our time - says that you should fill your mind with competing ideas and then see what makes sense to you. This channel is about filling your mind with those ideas. And in the process - upgrading your money-making toolbox.

    My psychologist said to me (since I have a very high natural output of effort) that the amount of productivity you get at either end of the scale, call it 1-10, is relatively small compared to the production you get at the middle. Almost like a bell shaped curve. I find that since I am a naturally high functioning person, I have learned to give myself some leniency in this regard. It does more harm than good in my opinion to over-do it. If you can give yourself the time and space to do things when you want (while maintaining a reasonable amount of discipline of course), then you will naturally get quite a lot done, and actually want to do what you are doing, and therefore get the most out of it. This applies particularly well in my case for studying. Your videos have been an excellent resource for me to tidy up my personal finances as well as starting to foster better life habits. Thanks a bunch :)

    Great video... I find myself getting frustrated at myself for having a hard time getting out of the Break/Timesink stage... I personally do short bursts of really high productivity, take breaks, come back and wrap up over time... But I do not love this method, and it causes me a lot of anxiety because the work is not really done until the last minute or close too, but it is generally good quality. I also feel like procrastination is a big contributor.. And something that is very hard to get over.

    Great video!
    During my years as a teenager, I used to spend countless hours on video games.
    There was little motivation or interest in the outside world.
    The moment I got naturally interested in one topic and then in another, the timesink part of my life reduced (and quickly). The motivation started to build up even more as the first signs of progress appeared.
    Now I try to avoid any topics that naturally are of no interest to me. I found natural interest as the only long-term motivator. That's one of the reason that I am not doing things for money more than I have to. I just cannot do something I am content with or receive pleasure from doing it, if it is outside of my interest zone. Whenever there is a purely outcome-oriented endeavor such as making money or publishing a new web project, I feel like "yeah, but I cannot do it for long, if there is nothing interesting in it". Maybe that's the primary reason for why we suck at work/project if we don't get the interest to move us up the ladder described in a video.

    Here we probably view productivity in the way of contributing to society through investing but to some its completely different. So you could argue its an opinion and therefore the hierarchy changes (e.g. output is being a great gamer). But still great video as always 😀

    Doesn't powerlifting qualify as an exercise 😐

    • @TheSwedishInvestor
      @TheSwedishInvestor  2 года назад +2

      Hey Arulius Savio! Cheers for the support. It's a good question and I realize that I should have clarified that more in the video. Exercising to a certain degree, no matter the type of exercise, although some cardio is arguably more efficient than other types, will bring health benefits that will allow you to keep up your primary grind in the long run. However, this effect is tapering off quite rapidly with the amount of exercise. If you try to compete in a sport at a higher level, sure, it will give you the health effects, but it will also steal from your energy levels and your focus. There aren't many successful businesspeople who are also really competitive in a sport (in case they didn't build a business based on their sport, of course). Hope that makes sense and that it helps.

  • @pudicio
    @pudicio 2 года назад

    I like the model on the whole. But the break section is definitely not correct as far as I'm concerned.
    I am building a startup and breaks really help me relax, recharge and some of my best ideas come when I am truly free on holiday. When you really push your productivity in places where your comfort zone is expanding the stress will really build and force you to relax and take breaks at some point.

    • @TheSwedishInvestor
      @TheSwedishInvestor  2 года назад

      Hey pudicio! It's a good point about indirect consequences of being involved in these types of activities. Hard to measure, but still important. My brother says that he judges "breaks" by the amount of inspiration he expects to get out of them, which I think makes sense and is aligned with what you are pointing towards here. I often get a lot of inspiration and ideas when I'm solely focusing on one thing, such as new content for videos or doing research on stocks. My "epiphanies" often come when I'm really deep into these things, but I guess we all work a little bit differently. Cheers!

    The support, break, and time sink are actually much more connected. The dopamine-repeatability graph needs to include "indirect utility" from the support category. Powerlifting is among the best activities to regulate mood, improve sleep, also improve cognitive performance. In this 3D plot repeatability needs to be replaced with "time spent per week (or month)".
