I cannot thank you enough. I am 55 this month and three months ago I was 195 pounds at only 5 feet tall. I tried keto and failed because I love my carbs. Also I really was vegetarian so keto was kind of gross for me. Once I found you, I found my people. Today I am 159 pounds which is amazing. My goal is 130 which I know as I gain my health, will be no issue. My bloodwork was recently done and my doctor is amazed. This IS my way of life. I loved my air fried potatoes this morning for breakfast. Thank you! Thank you!

Team nutritarian here, I just want to share a slightly different perspective.
When I was eating a low fat whole food plant based diet (starch solution style), I was never satiated. Sure, I was full, but I would still eat and eat and eat without feeling satisfied. Since I've started strictly following Dr. Fuhrmans' diet and upping my nuts and seeds intake, I am finally satisfied and able to listen to my hunger cues. So pretty much the opposite of what you said happened for me!
Weight-wise, I was thin on both programs, but I actually lost a few pounds and got even leaner on the nutritarian diet, even though I was really scared of eating more nuts and seeds at the start, thinking I would gain weight. Speaking of nuts and seeds, Dr. Fuhrman really convinced me that not eating them (and not taking a dha supplement) was actually not favorable to longevity, all the studies show that. And nowadays, I really think you're missing out on so many health benefit if you don't eat at least 1 to 1.5 oz of nuts and seeds a day.
Just a correction: you said there is a lack of starch in the nutritarian diet, but that isn't true. You have to have a minimum of a cup of beans a day and beans are a starch + you can also eat less nutrient dense starch, like oatmeal, etc. I personnally don't, because once I've eaten the cup of beans, two ounces of nuts, 2 lbs of veggies and some berries, I maybe have some room for a few more pieces of fruit and that's it, but I'm tiny. A taller heavier person who needs the extra calories can definitely eat more starch on the nutritarian diet.
Regarding animal products, I noticed Dr. Fuhrman's views evolved over the years. Initially, he didn't want to deter people from his diet from the start, because of the absence of animal products, hence the 0-10% guideline. I get that, because even though I'm an ethical vegan and that pains me to say this, some people just won't go on a vegan diet, no matter what. Hopefully one day the world will go vegan whether they want it or not and those people will consume lab-grown meat or some other replacement. But nowadays Dr. Fuhrman basically says the less animal products the better, he doesn't eat any and he definitely never ever said those were health foods.
About salt and sugar, the major difference between Starch Solution and nutritarian is that Dr. Fuhrman recommends what's OPTIMAL for health and longevity, while Dr. McDougall recommends a healthier diet that would still appeal to the masses. Only problem is that continuing to consume salt and sugar keeps perpetuating the cravings for those things. If you go cold tofurkey and cut those out, yes it will suck for a while, but eventually your taste will be stronger and you'll appreciate food even more.
So that was my slightly different pespective, hopefully it can help somebody who is struggling on a low fat diet, but is scared to eat nuts and seeds because of weight gain!

I’m a nutritarian gal all the way! Dr F is a massive fan of all beans, they are a starch and one of his Gbombs so definitely we are encouraged to eat them. I also love nuts and seeds as my way of getting healthy fats in so I do like that part of the regime too. I do still have potatoes because I love them and don’t see why we can’t include them as part of an overall healthy diet. He also loves oats which is a starch too! There seems to be so many pros for eating this way and including berries daily which are low in calories for great health benefits! Thanks for this video very interesting Emmie! Xx

I really liked your rundown on the differences between the 2 doctors. I think both are good, but the prize definitely goes to Dr. McDougall. He and his videos convinced me to switch my diet about 10 years ago, and I have maintained a loss of 100 pounds over that time period. As an older guy about your parents age, I stay very active, and I just gotta have those starches. I tried swinging the menu more toward Dr. Fuhrman's content a few times and I just got too hungry. I find 3 to 4 pounds of Potatoes to be pretty much a minimum. I have no doubt a wide variety of different veggies is a great idea, but I cook for one person and a more limited menu just makes more sense and is far easier too. Keep on making that always great content as I enjoy your videos.

    Very well done Emmie!
Very nicely done. I largely agree, SS needs more veggies, ETL needs more starch, but recently Dr F has said he always encourages people to completely eliminate animal products.
Also don't forget that Dr F is actually pro plant fats whereas Dr McD is generally avoid them as much as possible!
I eat pretty much like you said, more veggies but still including starch. Limiting but not excluding all fat.

I originally did the Nutritarian diet at the urging of my former doctor, and I lost weight on it. But I was only able to sustain it for 3 months, and then my stroke survivor husband was diagnosed with cancer, and then had a few more challenges and I was a mess. Nutritarian diet is not very satisfying. I would eat huge bowls of salad that seriously would take me 30-45 minutes to eat, and then be hungry again in a couple of hours--and Dr. Fuhrman does not believe in snacking. There is no comfort food in nutritarianism, and I did not have the wherewithal to be constantly worrying about what I was going to eat and how I was going to find the time to do all the meal prepping. Dr. F frankly states it is mainly a soup and salad diet. Only a half cup of grains a day? No pasta, no potatoes, no rice if you had oatmeal for breakfast. I was miserable.
However, I am grateful for the push into a vegan diet--I had never done this before--and it opened my eyes to a new way of eating, so I do owe Dr. Fuhrman thanks for that. And I stayed vegan for 4 years, even though I couldn't stick with the entire nutritarian plan. (Can't forget the GBOMBS). Then I digressed into vegetarianism, then lacto-ovo vegetarianism, then pescatarian diet, as I was craving salmon and honestly, in a pinch, it was just easy to fix a grilled cheese sandwich or scramble some eggs for a last-minute meal. I always knew WFPB was where I needed to be, but it wasn't until the Starch Solution entered my life that I really found a WOE I could stick with. For someone who has never enjoyed cooking, the Starch Solution fits me perfectly. It's food I am comfortable with, food I don't have to think about, and food that I grew up eating, though not always in its whole, natural form. This is a a plan I can see myself living with for years and years to come.

I was part of a one year nutritarian study through the University of Arizona. I always joked that I followed the nutritarian lifestyle better than Dr Furhman. I had to eat enormous amounts of food and always had a distended stomach. When I morphed into a combination of nutritarian/ starch solution I had improved gut symptoms.

totally spot on! you have to do whatever it takes to get those veggies in. if it takes a little sugar on the oatmeal, do it. a little salt on the green stuff, go for it. most people cannot go from processed food to suddenly eating spinach smoothies. I was able to wean myself off of meat and junk food by doing this. now I am mostly salt and oil free as well. down 25 pounds and cholesterol is way down, too. everyone is asking me how I did it. they dont believe me when I tell them how easy it is.

They are all (Bernard, McDougal, Fuhrman, Greger, Esselstyn, Ornish, Campell, etc) great. But in terms of overall health, McDougal is at the bottom of the group. He just doesn't go into the big picture, whole health, and nutrient density.

I love everything about your channel and all your philosophies and the love you share. Regarding this video…I don’t see it as a McDougall vs Furman “diet plan”, at all. McDougall is a genuine Dr who spends his days researching and never intended to be in the “diet” game. Furman sells supplements and that’s “nuff said” for me. Also, Furman’s plan leaves me hungry and unfulfilled almost always and I don’t like that, it’s too complicated and I don’t believe our bodies were designed to eat with mathematical equations in mind (this much fruit + X amount of nuts + this much lettuce = 104 years of healthy living). Also, if there were benefits to eating animal products then that’s why it should be included in a diet…the reason should not be, because more people will comply…? Anyway McDougall is my number 1 forever. I’ve been a disciple of his for more than a decade and as far as I’m concerned, the good Dr saved my life on RUclips! 🥰

I love starches a lot, and I love veggies a lot, but in the bigger picture I do a combo of the two even though I would choose the starch solution over nutritarian if I absolutely had to choose. Salt and sugar are my friends too so that would clinch it. My diet looks mostly like the starch solution, but I do eat a few lowfat/nonfat dairy foods and an occasional can of tuna or salmon on a salad for the extra protein kick for my bones. Great video Emmie.

The inclusion of animal products is indeed silly. Fuhrman is lacking there once again. Mcdougal has two great lectures titled Protein Mastermind part 1 & 2. I urge all of y’all to listen! During walks, cardio, making up din din, whenever! It is great stuff.

I love your hair color in this video. I do enjoy, however, you changing up your hair color and hair cut from time to time. I haven't changed my hair since 1985 lol.
