- Austin's own Slaid Cleaves has been called Americana's best kept secret, and we couldn't agree more. The rootsy singer-songwriter has called Austin his home since moving here from Maine about two decades ago. He's currently releasing his newest album, "Still Fighting the War," which has already received rave reviews, being described as an album proving he's in the peak of his career. The record offers keen insights into human nature, and songs exploring themes of blue-collar and small-town life are mixed in with playful, tongue-in-cheek tunes, along with some good old-fashioned yodeling.
HOWDY FOLKS! I'm a 41 year old lifelong Texan good ol'boy.... how in the dadgum hell am I just hearing about Slaid? This fellow is great, Breakfast in Hell is one of the most badass songs I've heard
Same here.I'm glad Otis Webb had him on his show discussing RWH w/Slaid.
Dude! Breakfast in hell.was the first Slaide song I ever heard ! I have been a huge fan of him for a few years now. Hungarian living in Nevada. I love the song: Put the shovel down." I think it's about me, lol. Be well in down there under those big Texas skies ! 👍🍻🤙
A Maine man coming home. We love you Slaid! Texas pride for sure!
I love this song... almost as much as I love Texas! :-)
The first time I heard this song was at a gig in England, everyone was floored by the words, there was a lot of laughter. Slaid is of course a brilliant songwriter with a lovely voice. His stories bring the songs to life like reading a novel. We miss his tours over here, not seen him since before COVID and from his replies to mine and other queries it doesn't look like we'll get to see him anytime soon. I can thoroughly recommend his albums though. A brilliant songwriter and live performer.
Would love for him to come back to the U.K. some time soon. I had a similar reply from his team when I asked too. A real shame.
Classic Slaid--the main Cowboy troubadour from Maine. Well done!
im blessed to have seen slaid live and by god he is an amazing performer on top of being a kickass songwriter
Love this! Especially because I used to play music in Austin Texas❤
Heard this on 91.7 this morning here in Austin, great song ^_^
Wow! Love it - but, damn! Them are fightin' words. Gotta think bout' how I feel about that! ;-)
My what a great song! My dad and I saw you in Minnesota, Grand Rapids I think it was. You are so amazing, my favorite is Breakfast in Hell! Your writing is so refreshing and the truth in your sound is such a treat to listen to. We are so happy you are doing so well in Texas! Dad said you told him it was a while between gigs in Maine, car problems n all. I'm so glad they appreciate you down there, your so cool. We love your podcast too! God bless and keep 'em coming, we will love everything you put out!
Great job on rhyming with Texas.
Thank you Lord.....beautiful.
There’s no such thing as the perfect love son….never mind. 😂
I love it!
Love this! I used to see Slaid perform in Portland, Maine in the early '90s with the Moxie Men. I recall them singing their version of the Buck Owen's song "Sam's Place" onetime and I was hooked! He just gets better and better!
This is gold
Okay, cute tune, but they ain't no woman a real Texan loves more than TEXAS!
He's from Maine... He tried to transplant but its not the same lol
Got me a pure bred Texas girl, I’m from Iowa transplanted after my Marine time.
My husband sings this song too, I love it it's one of my favorites:~)
Perfect.
Damn, what a song, this lad can write, brilliant. Cool, funky name too.
Slaide is so good !
Slade is the man!!!
Now.. THAT'S a song!
A sweet love song for a beautiful day. Dedicated to Carolyn who is far away. No worries, nothing could be fina, Carolyn's just out there seein' China.
Brilliant indeed, Slaid is great
nice song!!!!
Patiently waiting for you to come to Tucson, so many great songs!
Great writer
What a great bunch of lyrics... hahahaha ... he got 'em all in there!
“I’d do anything to have you here, I’d give up all my lonestar beer! I love you even more than I love Texas”
Oops! My bad. I came here hoping to hear Slaid's cover of Elton John's Texan Love Song. You young folks who have never heard Elton do country should give it a listen; one of my favorite tunes. I like Slaid, though; might go see him this weekend in Santa Monica.
Love this version so much better than the recorded one
Dang, but I sure love my truck.
Today was the first I had heard this song or of Slaid Cleaves, on NPR of course. I am off to Amazon to see what I can buy. I have not been so impressed with a new name since Robert Earl Keen, another Texan of course.
He was born in Maine actually
That don't make a crap! He lives here now.. and we're richer for it.
Top of the Texas songwriters.
Awesome singer-songwriter. Not a Texan though..... He's from Maine.
Good thing you don't have to be born here to be a Texan. He's proof!
***** Not true, but an "honorary" Texan...perhaps.
True, but hes still a yankee...

No true Texan would say that. C’mon. And no true Texan would trade their King Ranch for a Lexus.
