Slaid Cleaved nails it. He's one of the most underappreciated songwriters in America, singing a great song about some of the other most underappreciated Americans-those who sacrifice so much for us.
Wow! Very powerful. Desert Storm Marine, I had to medically retire from my job as a Police Officer due to PTSD. I'm still trying to live everyday. This song nails it.
Slaid Cleaves - Still Fighting the War-= "Well Slaid Cleaves you knocked it out of the park with this one, I believe you put so much of what our kids coming home are going through into words we all can understand-Thank you-" Chance Austin WLVR Bethlehem -Gold Star Father
I'm a former active duty Marine. I served during four years of peacetime, so I don't deserve the same accolades that my wartime brothers and sisters deserve. But I still get chills, and my chest heaves with pride when Slaid sings, 'you're running with the few and the proud'.
Great post. I'm a US Navy Vietnam Veteran but my service in no way compares to those "in country". I'm proud of my service but it in no way compares to those who came under enemy fire. I spent 15 months in Iraq as a contractor where we were subjected to rocket attacks which the only live fire I've experienced. Only one of them had me diving for the floor. Ironically I didn't come back with a medal for that one like I did for my time on Yankee Station. 😛
My own father was a ww2 veteran and a welder by trade. Being blown up halfway up monte casino hill gave him enough shakes, to be a great welder(perfect weld weaving), and a bloke that spilled a fair bit of his 3rd pint , for the same reason. Slaid nails the war thing…
I've been sharing this song to help raise awareness of vets returning with PTSD. I think it should be talked about more, they're not gettin the help they need.
+Kirsten Cowley (Advanced AV) I have PTSD from my time in Vietnam.I remember visiting my grandfather in England the year after I got back, where I slept in the room next to him. The first night I was there, I dreamt about a particular firefight, in which I relived shooting and killing a man. Repeatedly. My grandfather, who had served in France in 1914-15 (and spent the rest of WWI in Egypt and Palestine -- he knew T. E. Lawrence and didn't think much of him) said to me the next morning that I had had a rough night. I said that I dreamt I was back in combat, and asked him. "Do the nightmares ever go away?" He replied, "They will subside, but never go away completely." My cousin, who was a junior officer in the British army at the time, came in and asked what we were talking about. Granddad said, "I hope you never find out." I agreed enthusiastically. (My grandfather was right, the nightmares have subsided, but are not gone.) I have three sons. None of them has ever been in the military. While I do love and respect my country, I refuse to wear my patriotism on my sleeve. If you want to push my berserk button, try waving a flag in my face.
My Brother Luke showed me this guy and this song still fighting the war is talking about someone that is still in the war and fighting for his loved ones. This song is very touching
Stop the presses! This fellow just won American Idol, the Voice, and an Academy Award.........if it were up to me. My latest favorite tune since Only Grace, by Matthew West. Why is Slaid not a cast member on "Nashville"?
Absolutely outstanding. My wife and I are retired Navy officers living across the street from Jim Morrison and we are eager to meet Slaid and enjoy his special brand of music at the upcoming North Shore Concert in Jim spacious backyard.

Give a lifetime (half-pay) pension to every U.S. military member who did one honorable tour of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can raise my Social Security tax to pay for it.
When we go to war, we should raise taxes on the wealthy. So the wealthy will use their political clout to end the war as quickly as possible. In addition, the money should go to helping the Vets when they return. Win win, in my opinion.

The Corps is true religion .

This song cuts across generations. My dad came home from war in 1945, damaged. 20 years later he couldn't cope anymore.
Superb writing and singing. What a powerful song.
I fought in Afghanistan came home with a limp and a drinking problem thank you for this song.
Thank you, Justin. This is not an easy groove

Keep the heads up boys.
Thanks. Thanks very much from a Vietnam Vet.
I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing Slaid in person...If you get a chance go for it!
Given the chance I will certainly go see him. I love the smaller more intimate concerts by singer songwriters like Slaid.
This is a wonderful tribute to our veterans, Slaid Cleaves has created a master piece. Thank you Slaid Cleaves.
All of it. Every bit. God bless you.
Excellent sentiment. Good job, and thank you to my fellow vets.
Another awesome song! Loved it. You always have such great lyrics.
Thank you, sir. Pulled me out of suicide. I'm still fighting the war. RAKKASAN!
Hope for all the bast for you. You have great courage
Heart wrenching, haunting and beautiful!
Men go off to war for 100 reasons, but they all come home with the same demons. Everyday i want to go back...
I've been sharing this song to help raise awareness of vets returning with PTSD. I think it should be talked about more, they're not gettin the help they need.
Thanks for your support

Thank you for saying what is so hard for us to say.
Somebody gets us. Thank God, and thank you, Slaid Cleaves... Semper Fi.
Well played, good Sir!
So much meaning with the lyrics, thanks for sharing the song.
Hits it perfectly how it feels.
This song has echoes of John Prine's Sam Stone - I'm in tears right now.
Can't wait for the new album, and UK tour as well, Slaid.
A great song. Helps many suffering from PTSD i bet. #SAVEUKRAINE
I absolutely LOVE this!
Incredible from the first time I heard it

Why is Slaid not a cast member on "Nashville"?
The millennials do not pay attention to the important stuff
Great song, sounds a bit like Jackson Browne's Running on Empty which I also really like.

Indeed, houstonveer. Better health care and financial support for war vets has become political lip service. State lottery revenues, anybody?
