I love my Gagarin Class Battlecruisers with all the variants.
Do not acknowledge Kurtz trek. It is blasphemy!
I wish we got more Star Trek games. I would love to see a single player action adventure game in a BioWare sort of style.
there is that telltale star trek game coming out
@@qw3rty629 I'm more interested in being free to run around ships and controlling my character myself than simply select story options.
Fair
yeah, a Party RPG would fit Star Trek well, i mean, we see it on STO, but well, it's still an MMORPG first, so no Voiceactors for our Crew our ourself and not really a branching dialogtree
Honestly? Strip out a lot of the grind of the on-foot portions of STO, and it's the best ST game I've ever seen. I love the starship combat.
I like how you guys recreated the battle from Discovery but with the new refit ships
“The Gagarin finds herself in the same situation, one from century prior, luckily this time, it shall not be the end of her tale…”
"In all times and all era, man's greatest joy has been to take part in new discoveries." - Yuri Gagarin
Not really a fan of most of Disco design, but the Gagarin-class design work for me. Currently one serve as my ship, having above quote as the ship motto.
The Shepard and the Gagarin are just remarkably clean. Looking like a direct descendant of the NX-class certainly doesn't hurt. I remember when I saw her in the Discovery Tutorial, I said, I want that one. She's just pretty.
I agree. STD has some truly awful ship designs. The Discovery itself was a discarded design for the original Enterprise (and rightly discarded, at that), and most of the others don't make any sense. The bridge on the underside of the saucer? High-radiation warp engines passing straight through the saucer? Come on guys, you're just making up random shit.
Agree. In fact, the Gagarin hull design is more sensible and practical than the original Constitution and Galaxy classes. Sleeker, sturdier, simpler and more compact. Perfect for a combat oriented vessel. The other well done ship design of Discovery is the Buran. Also one of the best tanking ships in STO.
I'm personally not so sure Yuri would be happy about his name on a "battleship" (more like a destroyer, IMO) over an exploratory vessel.
@@deusexaethera That I don't agree with. The radiation itself is still kept away from the main body, but the only thing that would go through is the warp field which has to envelope the entire ship anyway. I've never been a fan of the whole pairs of nacelles and line of sight rules though. I follow the thinking that Roddenberry came up with those just to erase the old Franz Joseph designs from the franchise.
Now having a saucer section with negative space in it ticks me off. Having the bridge on the underside of the saucer is slightly irrelevant in space. But Means a lot if you ever have to crash your ship. And don't get me started on having an actual window for a viewscreen.
I wish this kind of story was actually present in STO. The loss and then re-discovery of the shipyard would have made for a great set of stories, and given an immersive in-game explanation for the discovery/emergence of these ship frames.
I got some great news for ya friend: it *is* from STO. (Just not from the game, it’s from the lore blogs)
@@atlasworldbuilder8246 Right-O and I loved those blogs. Though Doodledibob has a point. It would've made a nice breather mission (and commercial for the ships) to actually have our Captains cruise into Yard 39 as the initial recon to verify the area was safe for personnel and see all those classic ships, then come back later to see the new stuff they made. And there are a LOT of people who would just be satisfied having the lore blogs accessible from in game instead of going to the website.
@@atlasworldbuilder8246 What 3Rayfire said. The lore entries are not found in-game, and even then, a lot of them would be better if they were missions we could play through instead.
Sad part is, all this lore which I'll be honest is quite nice dispite how lacking in any logic it really is, still nice to have detailed lore. Actually says a really amusingly sad thing about the federation and its poor resource management and even worse design department.
It basically says "our design teams ran out of ideas over 100 years ago" and needed us finding a load of obsolete ships and a obsolete facility which would have taken longer to repair and then upgrade to modern standards than it would have to build a whole new facility, probably several times over. Oh and those ships which we already had the full technical blueprints for in the public database (litterally they are so old, school kids would have had access to their blueprints) have allowed us to decide that we should modernise something that was never all that effective in it's own time rather than make something new and actually effective. But then we still haven't realised circles are not an efficient shape for ship hulls.
As for using those ships, none of them would have been usable. The system wasn't lost instantly, it was evacuated, any ship capable of spaceflight would have left even if they had to tow it. It was a shipyard, not a space dock, you don't keep completed ships in a shipyard. Either they would have been incomplete, or partially disassembled for refits, either way, none of them would have been warp capable, nevermind combat capable, and even then they are all over 100 years out of date, you could take a dozen of them on with modern a runabout and it would win.
@@cgi2002 no? Shipyards are usually made to be modular for easier refits or retrofits, a fleet of about 20 construction oriented vessels could probably finish retrofit within a year. Industrial replicators can be brought directly to yard 39, which then can be used to accelerate construction speed without having to deliver the parts via starship, also fusion power plants aren't anything new, they have been used to produce antimatter for centuries. Sure the efficiency ratings have changed since, but the industrial replicators can be run sparingly while a new power plant is being constructed.
Love this stuff. While I definitely think STO has a very strange and constantly retconned history, especially with Picard changing parts of it too, I like how they at least try to keep it all straight.
Especially considering the large number of the early Story Missions that got gutted.
But I would say definitely that one of STOs strong points is unified designs between the factions.
The best thing about STO is it doesn't get to establish Alpha Canon.
@@dreadnought-ai A lot of old STO content was garbage, though. I'm not sure why so many people clamour for the return launch content, considering how rushed out the door STO was.
@@ffnbbq - oh yeah I totally get why they removed them, it’s just when the devs have mentioned the possibility of reintroducing them “revamped”.
I mean the hobus supernova, undine infiltrator controversy, and the subsequent Klingon federation war (which pretty much set up STOs lore) doesn’t really get major acknowledgement in the early missions, which then quickly moves on to new content. Although I don’t know how much the old missions touched on this either.
@@dreadnought-ai Trust me when I say it's mostly forgettable. The one half-decent mission was the one where you go back in time to stop Ambassador B'vat from changing history, and I bet a lot of people remember that because it was the only mission Leonard Nimoy voiced.
It's a good candidate to be remade if they ever get the Strange New Worlds actors in, because boy did Nimoy sound old.
Probably one of the best "Discovery conversions"
I've actually MISSED hearing your voice narrations, Herr Orrett! Great job, here.
I always thought of Spacedock as the name of an obscenely large shipyard station that collects detailed information on every stellar vessel that ever docked on it... I'll leave myself with my imagination.
Thank you for this video; it provides some explanation that ties together a lot of questions that Discovery and Picard raised with regard to why the Discovery era ships were never seen in other series or why that copy paste fleet existed at the end of Picard S1.
As a longtime fan of Star Trek since the original series I am most impressed with the designs of new and even more powerful Starships and this design is no exception long may it continue
You would like for this design to continue for a long time? Please explain.
Gagarin-class Miracle Worker is a great ship for people new to the game. Great when paired with warp core that has 100% slipstream drive bonus to farm credits in the Tour of the Galaxy daily mission. It's also pretty good in PVE and PVP with the right build.
I really appreciate the shipyard lore for why the Discovery-era ship designs received reimagined variants for the Picard era/STO era!
Such a graceful hull design. I want to watch it soar.
Another absolutely wonderful video, visually, content, and lore integration all done masterfully. And I love taking the Yard 39 story and using it to explain the surprisingly large Inquiry fleet. Well done and looking forward to more Cryptic colabs to come! (Especially when the next Vesta-Caelian variant is finally unveiled!)
That's a nice ship. I love how STO takes huge pains in trying to tie in all of the Prime Universe canon changes from the new series into the older ones and keep its own canon intact. Cryptic has done pretty well in keeping an over decade old ST game relative to the latest trends in Trek. I'm sure we'll see even more changes with the new show about Captain Pike and whatever the new Kelvin Star Trek decides to give us.
I hope the devs are drooling over what they'll get to add to the game, if that series has good writing & good stories.
Have to admit, the writing and internal consistency of STO is better than that of all the Kurtzman NuTrek shows. It's also more funny and entertaining.
The Gagarin is one of my favorite ships in STO and this was absolutely amazing work on your part to bring its lore to life here.
So nice seeing STO ships on Spacdock! :D
One of my ships in STO. Love it, and loving this series!
Really like this ship along with the Europa class
@@LordElpme Europa is also very pretty. I’m also a huge fan of the Buran-class.
3:40 Thank you for incorporating that one scene from Picard into this. That was hilarious.
One of the most powerful ships in the game too. And one of my favorites.
Really like the idea pf that lost shipyard, would explain why older ship designs are now being seen and updated.
One of the best ships in STO, both in looks and in performance. Great video.
Great video! Love the lore and history of Yard 39 and the reasons for both the huge Inquiry fleet and the re-purposing of "classic" hull designs for new vessels.
These videos are VERY well done. Short, sweet, and packed with info and great visuals.
I remember when I first picked up that ship. She definitely is a damage dealer; well beyond anything that I was expecting.
These kinds of ship break down this why I stayed with this channel for so long great content keep up the great work everybody
Still love the Gagarin, one of the best.
Yeah, I figured it was a rebuilt Utopia Planitia yard that did the Inquiry class. Good one with Yard 39 used instead. This was fantastic! Thank you!
I find it kinda funny that this video arrived the same day it showed up in Certifiably Ingame's Star Trek Online Story Series.
I really have to start playing this game again
I'm glad Cryptic Studios essentially sponsors at least part of your content Space Dock.
I want to know more about the Sagan Class USS Stargazer, and I wonder when they will add it to Star Trek Online
Good to hear you voice, sir.
One thing that always vexed me about star trek is that their 'battle' ships seem to have very few armament compared to their size. They should be bristling with weapons. But everytime i see a ship fire, it seemed to me like their offensive capability was an after thought.
This is in part because of the limitations of the 1960s series. Everything else built on that, and often didn't change as much as they could have in terms of weapons and ship design. In some of the newer iterations the weapons look more... scifi, with lots and lots of little phaser pulses coming from all over the ships, porcupine style.
However, in some older Trek, most notably The Next Generation, the Star Fleet ships really did have weapons basically duct taped to their sides as an afterthought. They built exploration vessels and science vessels. The weapons were there as a necessity to help them fulfill the rest of their missions, not as the main point of the ship's designs.
They seemed to prefer quality over quantity. Every weapon on the ships drew from the same power source, so numbers were less important than firing arc coverage. If you have two energy weapons firing at the same time, if they are powered by the same warp core then they have generally the same power ceiling split between them. With the Galaxy class even if she had one torpedo tube each fore and aft those tubes could launch ten torpedoes at a time, which is a lot better than the Connie Refit firing two every four seconds. They tended to underplay their tactical ability as a matter of dramatic and narrative impact and so the heroes would have to think their way out of problems rather than fight their way out, but even the TOS Enterprise could glass a whole planet in a couple of hours.
@@3Rayfire problem then comes, why such small power cores, your not limited to 1. It's a massive ship (especially in the galaxies case for their dominion war variant). Fit a 2nd or even 3rd warp core, in turn letting you add far more firepower and sheilds. Make a battleship/battlecruiser an actual warship, not a luxury liner that just happens to be armed like they always do. Combat ships don't need all the fancy science stuff, you have science ships for that.
The Remans got it right with the schimtar, that was a warship, enough firepower to beat anything it couldn't outrun, and then an enhanced cloaking device to boot. Even without its fancy radiation gun, it was a fleet killer.
Closest the federation ever came to an actual warship was the Defiant class which was more of a big fighter than a warship still, everything else was too big with too little firepower for its size.
@@cgi2002 I would say because every core requires an equal draw on your fuel supply. You'll only ever have the deuterium and antidueterium you can fit in the hull (bussard collector replenishment not withstanding). Starfleet is all about long range deep space exploration, so efficiency is very important in their engine design.
Curious enough the Hayes guide for the B'Rel Bird of Prey showed that it featured a cross connected twin warp core stack.
As for the Scimitar, fantastic warship, but I think it's worth considering that the very opening salvo of the Battle of the Bassen Rift knocked out the Enterprise's main power, She fought that entire battle on Auxiliary power.
Don't forget about the Prometheus which is was actually highly effective with shields and firepower above her size, and the Akira class which was both a torpedo boat and a carrier.
@@3Rayfire true but that's why o said your designated warships. A long range scout/science vessel has different core requirements than a heavy duty battleship.
A battleships not designed to be efficient, its designed to be brutal. And what says you can't have both. Your warp core is like any other reactor, it's not always operating at 100%, hell it can be entirely shut down when it needs to be. So build a ship, stick 3 in it, one is for day to day operations, runs the ship and let's you fly around been a boarder patrol craft or escort ship, basically a light cruiser, efficient and long range with reasonable fuel costs. Now you know your in a high risk situation, you power the other 2 up, you now have 3x the power. You've gone from been an fuel efficient light cruiser to a full on heavy brawler of a battleship.
Hell they don't even have to be full sized warp cores, the federation has miniature versions for the runabouts, or even a defiant sized core in a galaxy class. Just something to give you that extra firepower when you really need it.
But then the federation is also stupid in how they use their technology, always have been. They never think to pre-launch torpedoes for example, that is a self guided cruise missile, turn it on, set it to remote activation and throw it out an airlock before the fight starts, you now have a remote control missile swarm that can attack from a seperate vector.
Or if you really want to screw with your enemy, load a shuttle full of them. Have it fly just outside your sheilds keeping you between it and the enemy, and have it randomly transport torpedoes all over the battlefield. Or you know the moment an enemy ships sheilds are down, transport a kg of something into their antimatter storage, saves you firing on them.
Same with infantry combat, why does no one just use transporters to kill/imprison your enemy all the time. Hard to board a ship if you get instantly transported into the brigg. If they use inhibitors, start playing with the artificial gravity. Soon a boarding action requires more protective gear than you can reasonably carry while still been able to fight unless your the Borg.
Great to see another official breakdown. Thank you Daniel!
This video series is absolutely incredible. This one gave me goosebumps!
Wow I think I love this design. I love that it's named for Yuri Gagarin as well.
The shepherd class/ gargairn class is probably my favorite class design of the discovery ships
Were those custom CGI battle scenes made for this vid? If so, wow. Thats a big step up, bravo!
did I just see a Glen class? love to see that next
Amazing work as usual Spacedock. Also; did you guys just tease the next starship? The 25th century crossgield class?
I really enjoy these videos, especially when they make sense as to why we see these ships in the 25th century. Keep them coming. Can you do one on the Jarok Alliance Carrier or the Temer Alliance Raider? They need to be included in this series, IMO.
Just got this ship recently, one of the best ships I have!
A really cool ship design!
I absolutely LOVE this class.
Ah, one of my favorite designs of the game! Once again, bravo!
My Disco era Captain mains her. Hell of a ship.
How awsome was this ! this is a amazing breakdown, i love the Fighting and Flying Scenes
Very nice waiting for other sto ship breakdowns too.
These videos are an absolute joy to watch. Could we please get the Glenn class (25th century Crossfield) too?
One of my favourite games and franchise
One of my fav ships in sto and trek in general!
I absolutely love that the ships warp core is from Yoyodyne. Awesome!
Wait… “Yoyodyne” warp core? 🤔
Nice Banzai reference there.
I love Star Trek since it started I hope it doesn’t disappoint me on the new episodes.
I absolutely love this shit, it's very cool and special. All of the 25c discovery era refit are some of my fave ships (besides the Glenn class 😅 that one is iffy.)
Gotta say, the Discovery era Starfleet ships look a lot more at home in the main time frame of STO than where they are in canon, and the STO refits work for for most of them, and the few that don't just don't work (at least for me in general), namely the Edison and Somerville. At least STO made the Disco BoP finally look like a KDF design with their refit version, now they just need to do the rest of the Disco KDF ships.
I'm always a sucker for Starfleet ships.
I love the design similarities to the NX Class.
Interesting ship, I do like the design even though it does look like a plate with two knifes. The 2 Romulan/Klingon designs however I would love to hear an official breakdown on!
Warp Core from Yoyodyne. You can trust it implicitly! :)
Designed by Dr. John Bigbooty.
@@saberdogface Bigboo-TAY! :)
@@ricconway8719 Yes! That's right! Big boo-TAY! Bigboo-TAY!
I would really love to see an upgraded Birth of the Federation game. It would be interesting to be able to run that with a wider variety of ships and enlarged game setting.
We’re getting a World of Spaceships. Every ship with guns. Including Ulysses and Mothership!
one of the most beautiful ships ever designed imo
You have to take a look at the Farragut and Imperial Cruisers from Elite Dangerous
Having been recently canonized and now an officially sanctioned lore video, this makes me ponder if there is going to be an upcoming star trek show centered around a Gagarin and it's crew.
Small point: if Federation ships need to be battle-ready for a confrontation with Borg vessels, wouldn’t it be more effective to build 10-50 Defiant-class vessels than a few starships that contain 500+ crewmen that can be eliminated with one or two well-placed Borg cutter beams? As an analogy, the US naval fleet is composed of more stealth vessels (submarines, destroyers and drone missiles) than aircraft carriers.
Oooh I fly this ship, one of my favorites.
Would love to see the mirror version of these ship explained but I guess it would kinda be the same except the Terran Empire likes to strap a bunch of crazy weapons to there ships lol
Oh hell yeah! Battlecruiser!
*chefs kiss 🖖🏻
I wish "neutronium" wasn't used in science fiction. It's a material that exists and if it is used to construct things, the object would implode into a super-dense sphere with super-high gravity akin to a Neutron Star. If it can't hold that form, then the dynamic of the material would make it go Nova.
Amazing video, as always!
lol at the hoops STO has to jump through to fit with Picard.
Great looking starship
I'm waiting for a breakdown of something like the Da Vinci class, and an unexpected crossover with EC Henry...
Love these production values!
do you know where the visuals are from
Looks like an variation of the Enterprise NX01 class with harsher angles
That's a fine looking ship.
Spacedock, have been interested in your Cylon ship lore, but you must some ships, like the revenant destroyer, and the other Cylon fighters. Can you do those ships please?
That ain't no BS. I use a Mirror Gagarin Warship with a Shepherd class skin as the primary ship for one of my STO characters. This ship handles like a escort vessel with the firepower of a Battle cruiser or dreadnaught. A real case of a lightweight that punches like heavyweight. It's viscous.
"Keenser/Pegg Impulse Engines" I see what you did there.
Yep, beautiful design.
"Keenser/Pegg Type-3 impulse engines"
Heh, nice.
If Eli Silverman had to captain a ship, it'd be one of these. 'cause it's modular, and has a good amplitude.
Looking like an updated NX class.
Yoyodyne Propulsion... I thought Buckaroo Banzai got rid of them in the 20th century XD
nice explanation for the Inquiry fleet. i lol'd
Cheers. Loving this series
Any thoughts on the Walker/Georgiou/Shen Zhou class? And any practical benefits to a ventrally located bridge?
So here's a question, what is that diamond shaped ship that can be seen bombing mars in the Picard clips? (May make me look like a fake fan, but I'm not that intense I recognise every ship design). That ship design looks sick.
Don't know about the Canon ship, I think what you're referring to exists in Star Trek online as the "deimos pilot destroyer"?
I don't think we've ever been told. It doesn't appear to be Starfleet, so where did the synths get it? It has a lot of similarities to the Romulan vessels seen at the end of S1 of Picard, so maybe Romulan in origin?
@@dreadnought-ai that is indeed the ship I was referring too, thank you for letting me know!
those are the Synth Frigate Ships from Children of Mars or the STO "Dungeon" Synth Wave where you fight against them as a Holodeck Simulation
@@enz025 No problem!
If I have to guess next ship, it will be the Buran class, the battle-axe head star ship.
Great review thank you !!!
Just think, if the Shepard class fleet had not been trapped at that shipyard, they could have been serving for over two centuries, getting refits, and laughing at the young Miranda and Excelsior class ships thinking _they_ have long service lifes.
“Somewhat exceed… the combat abilities.. of Inquiry class…” certainly not based in STO?
Why does everyone seem to forget about the San Francisco ship yards?
so nice to see my main battlecruiser broke down by spacedock!
whats with the buckaroo banzi reference (yoyodyne propulsion)
I love your STO ship videos
