I got the email while I was at work and I'm stoked. The Atari 7800 was my childhood. I showed it to another guy I work with who is also in his 40s and he agreed that it looks cool. I have the 2600+, but I'm going to get this one too because the style just ticks that nostalgia button more so than the 2600 for me. It looks like it's probably the same hardware in a different shell, but that's fine.
It's interesting that you had issues with Amazon for the 2600+. I preorded mine on there and got it a lot sooner than people on the Atari Age forums who ordered directly from Atari got theirs. This time, I'll probably just preorder from Arari, even if it does go up on Amazon, just to show Atari some more love for making this console.

That's the problem with this "BYOC/BYOP" they used to include power supplies because it was verified to work with a device and it had a certain level of clean power such and so forth, now anybody can get any power plug from anything that might not be delivering the appropriate power for the device, cables and chargers that are meant to charge phones are not always the best to power other devices, we've experienced this with the raspberry pi, people were using charging cables and supplies for phones which did not give consistent power to the pi and it was underclocking or burning them out

    • @greenmachine5487
      @greenmachine5487 22 дня назад +3

Yup. The Turbografx 16 mini will burn out if it isn't given the correct amperage, as many people found out. I had issues with a Raspberry Pi showing a lightning bolt icon in the corner due to low amps, too. This is an easily avoidable problem if the manufacturer would just include the correct power brick for it.

    It's a 2600+ in a 7800 shell.

Great new release of my favorite 80's system, but why they didn't announced this system before consumers brought the 2600+ (which also plays both 2600 & 7800 as well). I've already have the A/V modded original, plus 2 FPGA systems that can play 7800 so I might skipped out on this.

Atari Creep was furious about this because he figured it was just the 2600+ in a new box.
But you pointed out that it uses a different emulator so maybe it will work better?
I recently got an old 7800ProSystem with about two dozen game cartridges but the joysticks don't work.
And Amazon (and Atari) are sold out of the new CX78+ Gamepad controllers Atari recently released.
I got excited when I saw Atari's announcement. I have no nostalgia for the old Atari VCS and I think this one looks nicer.
But I was never interested in wireless controllers when Atari first introduced their wireless joystick in the '80s.
I need wired (DB-9) controllers for my 7800ProSystem.
I was hoping Atari learned from the 2600+ and that the 7800+ would work better.
Maybe the different emulator will make a difference.
Caverns of Mars was written by a high school student a year after he got his Atari 800 and was released to the Atari Program Exchange (APX), but it sold so well that Atari released it as a regular game and even as a game cartridge for the Atari 400/800. Now someone has ported it to the 2600. Cool!

A word to the wise. I would avoid buying anything directly from Atari. The products are good, but the shipping from them, not so much. Back on November(28th) of last year, I ordered a limited edition XP cartridge of Fatal Run. It said 3 to 4 months for shipping and that's understandable. When the 7800+ was announced, I went to the Atari website, and was looking at my previous orders. I noticed that this cartridge was not shipped/delivered, just confirmed. I contacted customer support, and received a reply that this would be shipping withing the next 45 days. That will make it 10+ months. I never received any updates from them about this. I actually forgot about this. If I hadn't contacted them, I still wouldn't have known. I realize that mistakes are made, and that no one is perfect but WTF. Like I said the products are good, but not the shipping. If I do Preorder this bundle, it will be from your Amazon link. In 2024, anything 8-bit should probably use FPGA technology. Otherwise, it feels like a cost-cutting measure that adds to electronic waste. This device doesn’t even support flashcarts, so you end up having to buy even more plastic and silicon carts.

Wow Atari finally thinks of releasing a better Atari console then the 2600 fir once but I am not interested in buying any Atari consoles that’s weaker then Nintendo the only Atari I’m interested in is the Atari VCS that’s when they decided to make it have physical games not just digital

I have to question the wisdom of a retro console version of a console whose installed base verged on non-existent. I was a big Atari 8-bit enthusiast but I can't muster any excitement for this. A Crystal Castles sequel that appears to be a generic side scrolling platformer gets a "Why did he bother?" response from me. It completely loses what was special about the arcade game when it appeared.
The 7800 was the Kaboom cereal of consoles. It might have made more of a splash if it hadn't been delayed for several years. By the time it trickled into retail, 16-bit computers like the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga were where high end gaming was happening.

Shhhhhhh! ... If you tell them they are addicted to shopping and wasting their money like addicts chasing a compulsion to recapture the past - you'll only get chastised. Best to let them think there is nothing wrong with them, and that these companies are just trying to give them better options!
Trust me: very few of these guys want to hear (or believe) they have a spending problem, and all of this is the same products repackaged over and over again in slightly different ways and designed to feed their shopping addiction and weakness to nostalgia.
You point that these companies are intentionally preying on their addiction, and manipulating them to constantly buy new product thru a drip feed to keep the dopamine hits coming... well your just being an a**hole whose hating on the way they want to play d*mnd it!
You'll probably even get the tried and true: _"Listen: I don't care if you don't like it!",_ _"It's not for you!"_ and _"If I like it who cares?!"_ Knee-jerk response to your buzzkill remark.
No one wants to hear your common sense - because if they think a product they basically don't need (or already have) is "cool"... then that automatically devalues factual statements. It's all just fun and games here man! They "love" these companies products - they're doing good stuff for retro gaming!
Now. Just get excited, buy product and then get excited again and buy the same product in a different skin. If you enjoyed it, then buy more but different again! To h*ll with your party pooping! Buying stuff makes me feel good, and nothing wrong with chasing the past! lol. 🤦‍♂️

Nintendo offered Atari a chance to produce the NES in the states & they declined. They said video games are over. NES became a big hit! In a panic Atari who had the 7800 in the back burner, but canceled it, quickly rushed the 7800 to market to compete with the NES. 7800 It flopped! My point is that the 7800 is not worthy of this plus system. The games feel rushed. They're bad. The fact the ad calls it "iconic" is insulting. The Atari 5200 should be getting an Atari 5200+ release before the 7800. It has better quality games and great arcade ports. Atari could also re-release the crappy controllers, but now have them work well. A chance to redeem the Atari 5200. I'm not happy how Atari keeps neglecting the Atari 5200. No, the Atari 400 mini is not worthy tribute of the 5200. I don't care if the hardware is the same. I grew up with the 5200. I'm nostalgic for it.
