SORRY ABOUT THE WIND... It was very cold, and very windy.
A viewer of the channel reached out to me after he and some friends got stuck up the mountains west of Indianola, Utah. I fired up the Jeep, got a few guys and we headed up there, much more prepared this time.

Another thing: I started in vehicle 'repair' a long time back. The concept that Robby is at his level in such a huge facility speaks DIRECTLY at the shop's ability to repair vehicles properly.
Something that will make installing your chains a lot easier and will allow you to get them tighter the first time. Lay your chains out flat like you did. Use a 2x4 or 4x4 about 8 inches long. Put the wood block sideways about 1/2 way down the chain set you have laying out in the square where the chains connect side to side. This way when you drive onto the chain set, park on top of the wood block. This keeps your tires off of the chain to allow you to move them around and pull them tight. Will save you a lot of aggravation trying to get those chains tight. This way you won't sling a chain and rip out your fender. Good luck out there.
I bought a couple of the plastic chain install ramps with my last set of chains and they work great. They have slots you lay the cross chains in and then drive up onto the ramps and it spaces and positions the chains perfectly. I also bought the chains that have four or five rotating cams around the chain and they are fantastic. You hook the chain as normal getting it as tight as possible and then use the wrench to rotate all of the cams really pulling the chains tight. Add the rubber star tensioners and drive away and generally don’t have to stop and tighten the chains as in the old days.
hmm.... to surmise to make sure folk and myself understand.... a wood block per chain being fitted gets placed in the open slots between the chain. You stop on top of the blocks. That sound right?
Wont work for nice diamond chains though. Might have to buy a plastic fancy type the diamond arranged chain can sit inside allowing tire to roll above them for that. Go figure... I have one set of those diamonds and one set of regular cross chains.
As someone who chains up a semi every single day, you don’t need blocks or anything. It’s 8 mins an axle to do it right tops.
@@georgejulien3286 that is the difference... you do it everyday.. give you chance to develop the tricks and procedures to get chains right every time with out trick equipment... ideas like presented here are for those who do NOT do it everyday yet still need the chains appropriately tight.
@@coachgeo I mean I’ve never even needed bungees lol even the first time I did it.
Great videos, great talent, ignore the children trolls. This isn't Highlander - there can be more than one team that can be entertaining and educational while doing great work
Apparently they either don't stress Reading ( & nowadays: "video" ) COMPREHENSION in school , or these hater-fools weren't paying attention. Considering how many LONG HOURS they drive to some of these Recoveries , there's PLENTY of room for another Team. Heck , MATT OFTEN calls-in others when it'll be a tricky one ! DANG basement keyboard warrior citiots have never seen our Nation's vast expanses & beauty.
Yeah but how about we put all these guys in a derby arena....
"There can be only one!!!"
Yeah, it is Highlander! 🤣
@@dmelson7502 I will gladly get in a derby arena with who ever would like to do it
@@RobbyLayton I’m just glad to see more real people making videos about the folks who keep the world moving.
Seeing the XJ making it through all that snow was awesome
What a great recovery. Can't hardly believe your Jeep made it through that deep snow (even with the tire chains). [Happy Birthday to Hillbilly's passenger.] Great job.
I'm hooked, I was introduced by Matt. I've been watching the nugget work and more.
I first used chains in 1968 or 9. I put chains on a 1960 Buick Invicta to get to high school. I got there and school was closed. Mine were the only tracks in the parking lot. I have always loved playing in the snow. Old enough now that my idea of fun is getting on a John Deere and plowing snow off the drive ways.
Robby Layton, Matts off Road Recovery , Fab Rats, just brilliant, great entertainment with some hairy and tricky recoveries. Happy New Year from the United Kingdom.
Don't forget Casey LaDelle.
Yup I agree I whatch all of them I just started watching Robby I'm hoping to learn lots of stuff from his auto body shop
Casey Ladelle too 🔥
Another tip for chaining is your drape them from above and drive either forward or backwards depending on the slant of the road to get the chain tighter. And lots of bungees never hurt. Hooks out from the side sidewalls of the tires. Have fun boys!
I’m glad you got a recovery vehicle with a heater roof and windows. That cab-less Bronco looked dangerous for winter recoveries.
Heh I like this, it's like the trailer park boys version of Matt's of Road Recovery. A bit more rough around the edges and a bit more crazy 🤘🏻
I’m not sure if I should love or hate this comment
@@RobbyLayton 100 percent love it

I don't get snow where I'm at. What psi do you run in snow?
@@xmo552 depends on the kind of snow (water content) usually you want to do the opposite than in sand, you want as skinny as possible.

Hey Robby - I look forward to each new video. For sure, all of these recovery videos prove what an unbelievably capable and reliable the Jeep XJ platform is! I need to find one without rust, '95 or older.
Nice job, you're learning as you go and great that Matt supports what you do.
Hillbilly, good man behind the wheel for recoveries and he's moral support for the passengers. Good on him with the birthday wishes for the passenger!
You guys are something else.Wishing you a New year of Joy ,Peace and Love . Johnny from Cape Town..
Little Jeep rollin' with big iron, could be a country song. Glad plan A worked, but plan B woulda been fun to watch, too!
Good job, Matt would be proud👍👍
Awesome job Robert!! I always hate it when they say you won’t be able to make it in or you won’t be able to get me out!! I always have to prove them wrong!!!
Awesome vid. each recovery team has their own style and that’s why I like Matt and Paul and now Robby.
Good driving Hillbilly. Robby is lucky to have a good friend/worker like you. I like watching this channel.
The tracked loader seemed like the best tool for the job. For what you're doing, you may need multiple spider tensioners per wheel! I carry a few short chunks of 2x4 to aid in mounting chains. Place 2x4s between the cross links. Stop the tire on top of the 2x4s, so none of the links are pinned under the tire. Makes it easier to mount, adjust and tighten the chains.
My experience is those loader tracks are designed to be durable for job sites and actually don't have a ton of bite in the snow. Probably wouldn't have had enough weight, speed or traction to the get the trucks broken free and moving.
You guys are nuts for having had the balls to go in that area in the jeep. God, that's the middle of nowhere !!
That was impressive! Good work guys!
I love you're videos, keep them coming. Thanks Jim
The POWER of the Mighty Cherokee! I didn’t think you had a chance pulling that Duramax out in that much snow, Part Cherokee part tug Rope. Hats off to the crew one hell of a Mission.
If you tie up the tails of the chain with wire, or tuck them under with the tensioners, it'll make a lot less noise and help keep the fender or brake damage to a minimum.
Once I figure out which links work best I tie back the tails so it's easy to tell which links to attach to next time you chain up.
....just more unsolicited advice for ya!
This is a super tutorial for snow recoveries using what looks like heavy duty T-bar chains. Growing up on a farm and ranch down in Sevier County (just 70 miles south of Robby), it was one thing to have aggressive tires but a 4x4 with proper fitting and heavy duty chains was virtually unstoppable. You have very slick soil up there in Sanpete County so it's not only the snow but the mud you have to deal with. Super wide tires are a detriment.
I've been on a snowy deer hunt just over the mountain above Nephi where a little Chevy Luv pickup with stock tires pulled totally tricked out huge 4x4 pickups with campers up a series of switchbacks all night long before the opening day of the hunt.
You and Hillbilly saved the evening for the birthday! Way to go guys!
BTW, my elk hunting buddies up in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area in Montana blast through 3-4 foot snow to get in/out of their winter camps. They fabricated their chains out of logging chains! Knarley rigs. Its Interesting that they preferred narrower but taller tires as well.
I love this style. Just a old Jeep and a great team doing rescues. Skills !! 💪🙏
Glad I found this channel from Matt's video! Great work on the banana and entertaining content man!
Haha, I found YOUR channel from THIS comment - subbed!

Excellent recovery .... snow is no joke! Back in 1989 (Thanksgiving Day) I was at the Navajo Lake campground above Cedar City tent camping. It was early morning and light out, and I was still in my tent. I was the only one in the campground at the time. I thought I heard a rifle shot ring out, but didn't give it a second thought (figured it was just hunters). Shortly after, another "rifle" shot rang out .... this time closer. Still didn't give it much thought. All of a sudden I heard something hitting the tent? Looked outside and could see that it had started snowing .... hard! The "rifle" cracks I had heard was from lightening .... the first time in my life I had ever experienced "thunder snow". I'd never taken down my camp so fast in my life ... basically throwing everything in the back of my 1986 Jeep Wrangler. It was snowing even harder by that time. To say I was getting a little concerned is an understatement. I was a long way up in those mountains! No cellphones back then. By the time I hit Utah Rt14 west of Duck Creek it was really coming down. Now I was above Navajo Lake making my way out when in two separate places there were trees smoking - lightening strikes from those two "rifle shots"! I was on pins & needles making my way down Rt14 to Cedar City. It was snowing like the dickens when I hit Interstate 15. Semis were not slowing down and would bury my windshield in heavy slush causing me to pull over because my wipers could not handle the weight of all that snow and slush. That mess did not let up until I got near St. George, then the rest was clear sailing to Boulder City Nev. What an experience.
Fun vid. Cold. When I was in the Green Machine they taught us to chain the fronts first. They do the most work.
That was two great recoveries. Jeep, 4x4, chained up all four tires, recovery rope, a winning combination that I have always felt was great for almost anything. Oh yeah, and a spare tire too. What more can I say.
Thanks Robbie! Keep up the recoveries!
Awesome recovery !!!👍👍👍 Hope your jeep gets an upgrade like the Banana...😃
Great recovery with good teamwork, gotta love them XJs
When I used snow, I used to let air out the tyre put the chains on as tight as I could get them and then air up the tyres. Chains were nice and tight
Can’t wait to see Matt start doing body work videos . Kidding calm down Robby hah
Great job Robby & crew!!!
Man that Jeep has some pull on her im honestly impressed how well it does in the snow👊🙏😎
Fun to watch! Good job! Good to see Nick
Great job. Love the assist from the skid steer. I think I see tracks for your Jeep in the future. Ya done good.
Robbie, when chaining up it's easier if you cut some short 4x4 blocks and 45 deg. the ends. Lay the chains down and put the 4x4s in the center of the chain in an open spot then drive up on the chains and in the center of the blocks. this way you are elevated off the chains and you can put the chains on and pull the slack out of them easier and put the tensioners on them and then pull off the blocks and the chains will be tighter and less apt to take out a brake line or whack a fender etc. it's faster and easier. i've put on a lot of chains and this is way faster and the chains get on tigther. Please don't show this to Casey LaDell, he thinks chains only work on ice SMH.
Them tracks do a mighty fine job in the snow just saying
Is there a video on doing this??
@@RVingwithG are you asking about a video of the tracks on a Jeep

Great video. Loving your content.
At my shop I do go out for recoveries but mostly offroad recoveries and in the winter here in PA I started taking my plow on my recovery truck that way I can plow the snow to where evere the vehicle is stuck because it's usually someone in a offroad vehicle that calls me haha and it makes it a thousand times easier when you can plow a path to the vehicle and then you don't end up witching yourself out of a jam haha but loving the content ❤️
Hell yeah love it Robby! That was super fun.
Love the videos. Good job. Keep em coming.
Ok, so you carry a spare, I'm impressed. lol Your crew seems to get right into it. Good show !
Awesome guys!! Way deeper then I would have tried to go in!!!!
Nice! No hate here at all!! This is how my XJ is treated every winter..... steep hills, downed trees, usually a buddy that was out way too late last night, and a really stuck vehicle..... Latin Nation is going to be added to my Sunday morning coffee ritual! Subbed....
I’ve watched this video several times. It reminds me of my young and restless days. A great cast of characters. That’s what I’m takin about. Lmao. Keep the JEEP on hot standby…I have a feeling there are going to be more calls, since the weather in the west is pretty wild right now….
That was too cold for me. Great job guys!
Nice job Robby and crew.
Awesome… thanks buddy…
Just a general couple of tips from an old polar fox: never drive with a chain slack.
It destroys every little piece of metal so quick you wouldn't believe it.
(I speak from experience, only did it once, my then boss was pissed.)
It also does seem that a little more clearance between rear tires and chains is needed. You won't regret it if you widen the gap. Secondly: cut the chains to length back home - then the mistakes will be dealt with in a nice and warm place...
Thanks for sharing!
Great job guys!
Those Jeeps are little Beasts..And the rope is Awesome. Great Video Robbie.
HA! That reminds me of an old plow truck that I absolutely LOVED. I had a 9' blade on the front, chained up snow tires on all four wheels. It was a '94 GMC Suburban K1500. I made a custom chain shackle for the back and it pulled every vehicle out of the 3' deep ditch at the end of my discontinued road driveway. I had a camera set up in the back window to record everything (for liabilities sake) and would hand them the hook and tell them where to hook up to and where to not hook up to. I'd tell them how to turn the wheel and which gear (or technically none in neutral most of the time) to put the vehicle in... Every vehicle except one came out of that ditch, one way or another... Some in one piece, some in many. The only one I couldn't pull out with it was a fully loaded small propane truck... It was just too heavy and I didn't want to yard on it as hard as I would other vehicles... :O
Great video, keep them coming and just do your thing.
Impressed with that little XJ . That snow depth was NO JOKE !!!
Good work, Robby and crew. Thanks for sharing.
