I don't disagree with the top 10 list. I just want to make the observation what an absolute JRPG monster PS1 is since BreathOfFire3 does not even clock in on the list :-) And neither does StarOceanSecondStory 🙂Good times.

He's got most of them right. Chronocross I disagree with because there's too many useless characters among so many other flaws. Legend of Dragoon is a good experience, but BreathofFire3 OR 4 IMHO are better in many aspects OST, battle system, etc. I love Grandia, but most bosses were way too easy and it's originally a Sega game. One of the Breath of Fires, Star Ocean 2 and Parasite Even perhaps could've made the cut as they're better games than 2-3 of these selections, but overall to get 7 out of 10 of mine is excellent to see.

I don't want to say that these older games are better than the ones we have today, but nostalgia is a potent drug. I think that as long as there are passionate people both playing and creating RPGs, there will always be top tier games that become instant classics able to stand the test of time.

For mag classes there were 108 Gems armlet which amplifies all 8 elements/immune to undead, life leach, poison and toad. Also there were interesting parfumes fot female chars with double auto- effects, kinda float+haste, protect+shell, etc but i didn't try 'em coz 2 calculators with 108 Gems already destroy the game oneshoting everything in 1 turn and you don't need anything else except 108 Gems =)

I recommend waiting to buy any of these games. Covid made these games skyrocket in value after everyone on unemployment received an extra $600 per week. You might think $200-$250 for Suikoden II (I paid $120 in 2006 for the very amazing game) is a great deal, but honestly, the game was going for $150-$175 before the virus.
If you need your fix of Suikoden II, you can buy it on the PSN store for $10 as long as you are using a PS3. Also, you could emulate all these games on a softmodded PS3 using Webman. Other ways to emulate PS1 are on Raspberry Pis (or other one bored PCs), Windows PCs, MacBooks, Android phone or tablet, Softmodded PSP, Softmodded PS Vita, a huge variety of Chinese handhelds (like the RG350 for example), Softmodded Switch, Softmodded Wii, Softmodded PS4, Softmodded PS Classic and many other devices.
Owning a huge collection of video games takes a lot of time, money effort and space, so I recommend emulation for those without a lot of time, money or space. However, if you’re looking to collect video games, please use pricecharting.com to get an idea of what these games are going for so that you’re not over paying for the games you’re willing to collect.

Check pricecharting.com charts on the game, they also show proof of the game going for $175, but never have I seen a copy of Suikoden II go past $200 (unless it was brand new) until the virus. A bunch of great recommendations, I would've been very surprised if FFVII hadn't been on the list. I'm actually familiar with all the games you've highlighted, though I remember passing on Legend of Dragoon, we (my mom and I) Didn't really take a shine to it very well.
This list also made me kinda sad. Mom and I used to play these games. Back then, it was common for me to do a dramatic reading for the characters (especially those that didn't have voice acting). It was something we did together, even if there wasn't 2 player support. I know she ordered Grandia III last year and if I'm not mistaken, one of the last games I helped her play (by beating a side mission/minigame) was Grandia. I miss her, but we made so many memories, going all the way back to Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy, all the way through the PS3. Her hands weren't so good, so she wasn't able to handle the more action-oriented games, but I kept an eye out for JRPGs because of her.
I still love them, but there's some things that just won't be the same.

It's because of games like these that I love the Vita. 50 bucks buys you pretty much all of them.

Exactly! The Vita is a pretty awesome handheld.

Fun Fun series. Perhaps one day you could do this for each system. Although for the PS1 and PS2 alone you could do a series on just those 2 consoles. Thank you for taking the time to do this video well and explain each choice.

That’s the plan! I want to do a video like this for every system. PS2 is next :)

Wild Arms 2 beats Wild Arms outright, also no mention of Tales of Eternia

I enjoyed Wild Arms 2 far more than 1 aswell.

Weird. Every single one of ShadoChris's picks (and their series) are at the bottom of my RPG list, while GameShelf picked my top favorite games (and series).

We picked these games together and picked the ones we enjoyed the most to talk about. A coincidence really 🤷🏻‍♂️

what an incredible list. I mean the ps1 is just incredible for jrpgs. I would switch a few in and out maybe but honestly this list is extremely solid. Breath of fire 3 would be in there somewhere for me but I love that you give vagrant story some love. ALundra might be in there for me too if that counts as a jrpg :) Great list guys.

The PS1 was a goldmine for JRPGs. It seemed like a gem was releasing every week.
