- Your ratings and comments are welcome! Video from John McDermott's live DVD "A Time to Remember" (2002). Aside from his recordings of "Danny Boy," fans of John McDermott would probably rank "The Old Man" as their favorite. And this live performance is, by far, the best of his many recordings of the song. He displays genuine emotion over the loss of his own father. A real tear-jerker. The studio (not live) version of this song is also on the CD of the same title (also released in 2002).

"JOHN CHARLES McDERMOTT is a Canadian tenor best known for his rendition of "Danny Boy." Born the ninth of twelve children to Irish parents in Glasgow Scotland in 1955, John and his family moved to Canada in 1965. Growing up in a musical family, his only formal musical training was at St. Michael's Choir School in Toronto, Ontario in 1971 and 1972."
I saw this on PBS about five years ago and was moved to tears. I just found it again on RUclips (thank you!) and it had the same effect. John McDermott's performance is a beautiful and moving tribute to all fathers who are no longer with us to comfort us and to share in our joys and sorrows.
This coming Sunday, Easter, marks the 30th anniversary of my own father's passing. And I miss him so much. But we will be together again one day.
Thank you, John McDermott, for this gift.
I'm a big tough man, but this song makes me cry. My dear late father was a great man, sorely missed, much appreciated in memories and wisdom he taught us.
I'm a dad and I miss mine even to this day (he passed on from cancer in Dec 2000. My little girl never got to know her grandfather but I hope she gets to feel the same kind of love for me as I did for my old man. Well done, John.
Played this for my dads memorial when he passed away from cancer In January. It helps me get by every day.
My father passed less than a month ago, and my mother shared this song with me. I could not express my thoughts any better than the words of this song. "The minutes fly, and the years roll by". All too fast it happens. I miss the old man.
I love this song. We played it at my grandfather's funeral. It gets me crying everytime.
My 6 brother and sisters just buried our 91 year old 4th generation Irish father. He loved Ireland. He was able to go there 5 times. We all went there this past summer but da was not able to go, but we all shared our experience. Da was a product of a poor childhood and the depression .Also a time when a handshake was a contract as wellasyour word a contract.Nothing like today. That too has died with him.And willwith us as well.
I will miss you OLD MAN and so will the world.
This song is very touching,
......he was born than just a father, a teacher, my best friend.....
Hope, not only John McDermott and his father but also
all members of our families have such a nice feeling each other.
Just lost my dad today. Miss him terribly already. A friend sent me this clip and it puts all my thoughts in such a beautiful song. Will be my final gift to dad
My dad just passed away at 89 not long ago. A WWII veteran and hero. This song... there are no words. Thank you for posting this and thank you John for all of your music that touches me so deeply.
Thank you John MCDermott - my Dad went to see you every year when you came to Peterborough (and I with him). I would have played this for him when he past away 4.5 years ago. I share your lovely sentiments 100%
I was at his concert 2 nights ago and he still struggles to get through it. Sitting in the 5th row centre, I could see the tears on his face while looking through my own tears. He still takes the walking stick and bunnet on stage. An incredible tune, and a more incredible performance.
No matter how many times I listen to this song, tears come to my eyes. John sang/sings this song with such true emotion, you can't help but get a little teary eyed.
Love this song, it is for my dad too
I saw john live once with the irish tenors and he did this and I don,t think there was a dry eye in the house, and when he finished there were tears in his eyes, and I thought oh john don,t cry, if you cry I,ll cry, a beautiful song, and thanks for posting
He really puts his heart into his singing.
i love this song ... it is so emotional - you can see that it is still emotional for him as well ... he is brilliant!
I was at the taping of this PBS. John's family was in the audience along with many of his friends. There wasn't a dry eye in the theatre during The Old Man and not one sound during the song. It was heartbreaking to see how much John was struggling to get through the song without breaking down but he did it in one perfect tape. Even though written by the great Phil Coulter, it's John McDermott who owns this song. I know his Dad is very proud of "number 9".
What a beautiful tribute to his Father. I too, miss my Dad so very much. There is never a day goes by that I don't notice a bird singing or a leaf changing, a river flowing or any such beauty, that I don't think of him. This has touched my heart and I will be so happy to share with my brothers and sisters so they too will "remember".
So powerful. Heartbreaking for some who have lost their Dad.
I feel very blessed that this song was one that I saw & heard with my own dad on PBS station before he passed away in 2005. At his funeral, largely because we both loved (and cried) over this song together, I requested it be sung at his Funeral Mass, in the quiet "post-Communion" time, before the end of the Mass & accompanying him to his burial in the National Reserve Cemetery in Rittman, OH. Even now, this song & its wonderful memory evokes a very strong emotional chord when I play on my iPOD.
This is his best version-for viewing. Every time I have heard it, I feel the love.
for all our dads ....Happy Birthday Dad thanks
Totally awesome song!!! I couldn't stop crying!!!!
I didn't know John, but I came to like him after wathing this video.
So I bought his cd immediately.
He's really a great artist.

🙏💔🥲
I see this was from 15 years ago. I pray life is better for you and your family. I miss my dad beyond measure and would give everything to have him here with me. God bless you and those you love.
My Daddy
beautiful, you can tell how much he misses his father, and the pain he is still feeling comes through. thank you john for sharing your love for your father with us, and thank you for helping me cope with the pain of losing my parents( my mom in 73, and my dad in 86), this song says it all in a beautiful way, and is a fitting tribute to all fathers and mothers who have passed
four years ago today my father passed away....I pray that this will get easier...he was and always will be my best friend...miss you more than ever
Brian, We are never the same upon losing a father. Mine passed in 1985 and I still think of him every day. But over time it gets easier, unless someone or something hits home. I was looking at WW2 photos never seen before on a website I don't even know. There was my father outdoors in the Philippines - in one of them he was shaving, kneeling on one knee. A mirror in his left hand, a razor in his right hand. In another photo he is outside standing with about 200 soldiers. He is standing in the front row, his left thumb tucked in his belt and a cigarette in his right hand.
Sorry for your loss. Think of all the good memories. Take care.
He did have tears!
I think of my dad and my grandfather everytime I listen to this and I still miss them both, though grandpa was killed in 76, and we lost my dad in 86, the song still brings tears to my eyes, as I think back. thank you for posting
beautiful
This song still chokes me up......thank you!

I SAW jOHN IN RAHWAY NJ WITH MY FATHER ..NEVER FORGOT
I miss my dad so very much
This was filmed shortly after John's father passed away. In the beginning you can see him look over to his left and smile. His sister was in the audience that night, which made the night and the song that much more emotional. One of John's best songs...
Agreed. And I made reference to that in my notes to the right. Unquestionably his BEST performance (live OR studio) of ANY of his songs. Thanks for your comments! -Mac
I am sure you loved him dearly like me self!!!💚
i miss my dad. thank you john
this is a great song.....and make think of my old man,he pass away when almost 6 ..too....i miss his cooking ,,,i miss his scolding ...i miss him make me take my med ....i miss him cover me with my smelly blanket in the night ....i miss him soo much ....love u dad ...
You were so blessed John to have such a wonderful father and he must have been a very proud father too.
Thanks for sharing this video its the most moving performance I,ve ever seen.
just so beautiful for all the dads past on i miss you dad so much thank you mac for a lovely song.............
Whether or not you have just lost somebody, this is just one great song to listen to. Well, my old man died many years ago and I have got over that loss. But now my older brother has died suddenly. And I have only one older brother, have two younger brothers. I am back in that place where you need comfort, where the tears swell and you choke with sadness. Ah, in tears, this gives a little bit of comfort; but we have to deal with loss and sadness alone and within ourselves. But thanks to this song and to John, it helps a lot.
John, I hope since this post you are better. I know losses too.
Shannon Prouty Thank you kindly for your comment, it helps so much when things (especially grief) are shared. Hope you are good too and although we never fully get over our losses we do come to terms with them.
I really love this song.. it reminds me of my father and i..
Happy Father's Day to everyone!

My dad died in WW2 when I was a newborn. I wish I could have a memory of him like this.
I truly love everything sung by John McDermott, and this song is very special :0)
I remember when he did this at a three irish tenors concert here in columbus, ohio, when he was finished I don,t think there was a dry eye in the house, and I saw tears in johns eyes and I remember thinking oh john don,t cry, if you cry I,ll cry too, it brought back memories of my own late father

Thank you for your nice comments about this post. I am most pleased you liked it. -Mac
@Chreepo
How the heck did he get through that without bawling? I can't even read the lyrics without pouring.
Awesome song.
I've not heard such emotion nor seen tears on other videos of Mr McDermott singing this song. I really believe this is my favorite video of him while performing this piece. Thank you Mr McDermott.
me ma loves this
appreciate them now!!, they will be gone too soon
Thanks for your comment! -Mac
This was sung at John's funeral 7 year ago and also in Ireland when ;Cathy, Babs, and I traveled to Ireland. Cathy took pictures of JOHN nd we placed into every city we visited so that we could say he went along with us.
I love this song !!
Mitsy#9
I really like the song :)
wonderful...almost as good as George Donaldson of Celtic Thunder. Both are very sincere and convincing...you can feel their pain.
@macrosent It Disnae matter who yi lost, it means just as much, I lost my Dear Wife 6 Months ago and the song means just as Much to me, and it still Hurts so Much..Jock
He’s so full of it. Manufactured emotion. He DID NOT WRITE THIS, lied to an interviewer years ago that he did. This is a Phil Coulter song. He tried to screw around on his wife with me. He’s a colossal narcissist!
phil coulter ;)
Gra
is he dead ?
