Been an Irishman for over 60 years. This is, without doubt, the best rendition of this lovely song, I have ever heard. I have sang it numerous times whilst performing myself, and I have probably heard it hundreds of times by different artists, but not as serenely done as this. Let's be accurate here. The "Irish" did not believe that this was an old Irish folk song, rather, an elderly individual "thought" it was an old Irish song.
Johnny Cash wrote it on an airplane as he was departing from Ireland after a trip there in 1959. The song was released by Columbia Records in April, 1961, as the B-side to “Johnny Yuma-The Rebel,” the theme song for a popular television show in the U.S. at the time. I’ve been a Cash fan since high school and “Forty Shades of Green” is my longtime favorite. I think it’s quite unique among the hundreds of songs Cash both wrote and recorded during his life. This performance by Johnny’s eldest daughter Rosanne, with her supporting cast of outstanding Celtic musicians and vocalists, receives my vote as the finest rendition of this song I have ever listened to or watched. I only wish I could have been there to view it live. It appeared to be an epic New Year’s Eve for audience and performers alike! (Perhaps Rosanne’s lovely smile at the end was an indication she thought her father would have been pleased.)

So glad to hear every song she writes and sings so beautifully well. Ever since she made her big label debut with her terrific album, "Right Or Wrong," I've been her devoted fan. For example, I remember that on the "Right Or Wrong album, Rosanne sang a duet with Bobby Bare on one of my favorites, "(Don't Need) No Memories Hangin' Round." I am his fan too. I'm also Tom T. Hall's fan, as was Roseanne's and her father's. I shall miss him, as I know she will (and is doing so now). I always look for tickets to her concerts, and I hope she'll come back to Duluth/Gwinnett Arena or to Atlanta soon. We love Rosanne.

I'm Irish and I didn't know for years that Johnny actually wrote it! Made me love it even more!
John was from a Scottish family and became interested in his roots and celtic music too
Johnny Cash wrote it on an airplane as he was departing from Ireland after a trip there in 1959. The song was released by Columbia Records in April, 1961, as the B-side to “Johnny Yuma-The Rebel,” the theme song for a popular television show in the U.S. at the time. I’ve been a Cash fan since high school and “Forty Shades of Green” is my longtime favorite. I think it’s quite unique among the hundreds of songs Cash both wrote and recorded during his life.
This performance by Johnny’s eldest daughter Rosanne, with her supporting cast of outstanding Celtic musicians and vocalists, receives my vote as the finest rendition of this song I have ever listened to or watched. I only wish I could have been there to view it live. It appeared to be an epic New Year’s Eve for audience and performers alike! (Perhaps Rosanne’s lovely smile at the end was an indication she thought her father would have been pleased.)

So glad to hear every song she writes and sings so beautifully well. Ever since she made her big label debut with her terrific album, "Right Or Wrong," I've been her devoted fan. For example, I remember that on the "Right Or Wrong album, Rosanne sang a duet with Bobby Bare on one of my favorites, "(Don't Need) No Memories Hangin' Round." I am his fan too.
I'm also Tom T. Hall's fan, as was Roseanne's and her father's. I shall miss him, as I know she will (and is doing so now). I always look for tickets to her concerts, and I hope she'll come back to Duluth/Gwinnett Arena or to Atlanta soon. We love Rosanne.
