I'm exactly the same mate. I spent a long time finding the one. Just when I was giving up hope, I spotted a Gibson Southern Jumbo up in the heavens, a few cobwebs were on the headstock because nobody had touched it for over a year. I picked it up and the rest was history. The Songwriters are consistent and amazing, yours sounds 👌🏻. Enjoy!
I, too, bought a Songwriter Standard sunburst back in Dec. 2021. Great balance, projection, and suttle nuances with finger picking. Last guitar I need to buy. Thanks, Gibson. From Australia.
Try Collings, I picked one up at a store after playing the usual suspects Gibson J45, Dove, and J200. I also played whole host of Martins, Gretch, and Taylor guitars that day. I should clarify that that day I had the privilege of going into a guitar store and attempting to find the one. I’m and audio engineer in Minneapolis and have been producing and recording people for a while now, so my playing in mainly functional. I don’t need anything flashy. I need a tool that sounds good and gets the job done. I picked up a Collings CJ, it was a mockup from 2008 of a prewar era advanced jumbo. The moment I picked up that guitar it was over. It didn’t fight me, it sounded just as big as my D35 and just as articulate as my 814. But it played so much better. I haven’t picked up anything since…thanks for the video, it was super fun to watch you search around and play through some instruments!
Awesome choice for a guitar. Very dynamic and full sound is what turned me on when I got my Songwriter. It really is amazing and a underrated model from Gibson. 🤟🏻
I’m not really a huge guitar guy but I just wanted to drop by & leave a comment to show support cause I love your vids, letting the vid run for average watch time and a like for the algorithm 🤝 keep up the great work bro
Colt, from the first chord...the first Gibson did all those things you talked about. playing the other two were just due diligence from that point on, for me. haha happy for you, brother!
Cool. You picked the same guitar that I have. I knew it when I picked my Songwriter up and played the Bm intro chord to Pinball Wizard, I had the same experience that you did. Congrats!!!
Nice! I wonder what the science is behind the first guitar sounding so different than the second one of the same wood, same brand, same year of construction, but just a slightly different body shape and bridge design. That and maybe a slightly different neck shape
After doing some research, I've come to the conclusion that the first guitar sounds different because it has a 25.5" scale length instead of Gibson's typical 24.75" and sounds like it may have a lighter string gauge. There's probably more reasons, but that probably has a lot to do with it
Absolutely love my Gibson songwriter. Sounds and plays great in any room I’ve recorded in, live shows too! It’s my go to axe I reach for, followed up by my J15 which is a great guitar at half then price!
Watched this video 10 times before buying one at Gibson Garage. It was down to this and the J-45. Figured I couldn’t lose with either. And sounded just more modern voiced.

you have described exactly the journey I was on and what I wanted an acoustic guitar to do when I found my....wait for it....gibson songwriter deluxe studio back in 2011. i have since put in tusq bridge pins and had it refretted with jumbo steel...sustain that Nigel Tufnel would be proud of! on another note I have played many Songwriters since 2011 and have not found another that comes close to my original. Thanks for the vid. Jeff
Colt I’ve always steered away from rosewood guitars in a dreadnought size because according to my luthier they typically aren’t as balanced as mahogany. I notice when I record a smaller guitar like a 00 or OM the rosewood is a perfect blend with the smaller size. With a dreadnought rosewood for specifically recording can often be overly boomy. Obviously mic placement plays a big part of that, but what are your thoughts on that. Both of my luthiers who I trust always have told me stay clear. Also, I have a client with multiple high end vintage martins worth small fortunes that were gorgeous in the room but some of the hardest guitars I’ve ever recorded. They are all rosewood back and sides dreds.
So Rosewood is certainly going to be boom compared to something like Maple, no doubt. But this is one of the best sounding guitars on tape I’ve ever recorded. For me personally when looking at acoustic guitars it’s always about the total package. The size, the bracing, the woods, and the overall construction method all work together to create a sound. I’ve played Guitars with all combinations that I’ve hated, and guitars with those same combinations of wood that I’ve loved. So for me it’s not as simple as this would sounds bad and this would sounds good. It’s the total package. Hope that helps!
Colt, Brother...this video is a complete re-run of my quest years back!!! I hit every music store within 50 miles of Salt Lake, picking up Martins, Taylors, Collins, all the heavy hitters...in search for "that" dream guitar. Many months later, I kept coming back to a sexy Songwriter Deluxe that I ultimately threw down for. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this guitar! Like a fine wine, wouldn't trade my 2006 for nothin'! Inspiring review, cheers Bud...
Excellent demo young man! And yeh, I've just got one of these beauties. Compared it to all sorts, and it shone. Given that it's brand new and has yet to cure , oh my . Glad you got a good un.
The first guitar was just 🤯 so amazing sounding. Like you said great sustain but so full sounding, it’s definitely a guitar that would make the recording process so easy it just sounds so good.
i don’t play enough acoustic guitar at the moment to warrant buying an expensive one, but i’m sure I’ll be checking out the gibson’s when i do. all of them sounded great
Personally I’ve never been a fan of the 121 on acoustic guitars. It lacks a bit of vibe compared to like a 4038 or something. However it’s one of my favorite electric guitar microphones
Good news is you found the perfect guitar for you. Bad news is that you (like me) will never stop searching for (and eventually buying) another 'perfect' guitar. It's an addiction but it ain't hurting anyone... just your wallet. Great video. ps - Corey sent me here
So, we share a similar problem. Now, repeat after me: I can stop anytime I want. If anyone believes me, I can fund my next acoustic purchase with the big bridges I will sell them. Maybe I shouldn't have typed those words out loud.

I will agree that purchasing a guitar from Sweetwater is a big recommendation from me, as they do set up the guitar perfectly. My "Inspired By Gibson" Epiphone J200 was ready to go and set up perfectly. They also included a quality sound hole humidifier.
What a nice that you live close to Sweetwater, I had to return around a 18 guitars on a different places to get what I’m looking for, included a few Gibson, the one it’s really talk’s to me and is the one I keeping is a Gibson J45 rosewood
I have a 2012 Custom Gibson SJ 200, Sikta top, Rosewood back and sides. I have not played a single acoustic that has come close. I can vouch for that wood combination on a Gibson, enjoy!
I love the Gibson songwriter. I had one a few years ago but regrettably sold it. The huge difference with the songwriter and the other models you played is that the songwriter has the standard scale length, which give the strings more pop. The other two had Gibson shorter scale length.
That makes sense. I closed my eyes listening and I could have swore it sounded just like my D28. Gorgeous guitar. Gibson definitely adds some extra styling to them over Martin. Martin gets ebony now on board and bridge on the 28. Seems like it could be a tough choice between the two for a lot of people.
😂My late comment. I had same journey. After comparing J45, hummingbird, and dove, I ended up with a songwriter custom shop deluxe. The rosewood is magical with the square body dread design. Its a bonus they are so attractive. Best Gibby in my opinion. Only drawback is...they aint cheap.lol
Hi Colt, I have a Gibson J45, its a 57, so nice vintage, it sounds great in the hand, but not been the easiest to record well, are you pleased with how yours is recording? I have to mike it a couple of feet back or the bass gets a bit much. Like you I have the km184s, so need to try the xy again, how far have you got these back and what you pointing at ish? Cheers! Jon
Maybe hard to hear on my laptop, but it sure sounded like you picked the right one. BUT, is it true that Gibson's tend to break between the headstock and neck?
I'm typically a Taylor guy... 816ce and koa mini-plus... but last week I was at a music store and saw a Gibson J-45. I'd not played one before, so I thought what the heck. The connection was instant-- its just a great fit! Awesome sound. Tight on the low end, which really caught my ear. And it lays well sonically to support a vocal. Two hours later, I reluctantly parted ways. Still thinking about that J-45. Now I'm looking at color options... Lord, help me. 😎🙏🎸👍
Always fun to watch someone else spending money on guitars! I have a Gibson Southern Jumbo custom that is super. The Martin 000 MD is great and long overdue.

Sure did! There was no way to put everything I tried in this video as I have played hundreds over the past four years, and probably played dozens of guitars here at Sweetwater
Hey Colt great review !! Actually picked up a songwriter Standard myself. Was just wondering what thickness and what kind of pick you use for your acoustic
J45! It's fuller and more complete. The other 2 sound a bit tinny. I just went through the same process. Ended buying a Martin GPC-13 Ziricote. Don't get me wrong I love it, but it doesn't check all the boxes. The Martin has a lot of low end. I just bought a Gibson J45 Standard. I think my search is finally over.
Really nice guitar. I’ve been on a similar search for a really long time. I landed on a Martin D-28. The guys at Flores have been keeping my old guitar playable for toooo long lol.
I was on this same search a couple of years ago. I also bought a Gibson Dread but I ended up with an Eastman E20-OM. Adirondack Spruce, Rosewood, Mahogany neck, ebony fretboard. So balanced sounding and projects smoothly top to bottom and incredibly dynamic; solid lows without the boom. It's a favorite of the singer-songwriters and alt-country people I record. Sits in the mix well or takes front and center well depending on what mics and or picks I use.
To me, the J45 sounds great.. Hummingbird is not as full sounding. I've tried quite a few of them over the years but didn't find one that sounded as good as your demo. I finally settled on a Martin D18. Once in awhile you come across the one that just is right.
I bought my first Songwriter in 2017. It's a Deluxe Model . It's a BADASS Guitar. It's one of Gibsons best Models. And a MARTIN M-36. IS A GREAT GUITAR For recording. Its one of MARTIN'S best keep Secrets.
The Songwriter is an awesome guitar. Congratulations! Did you have the chance to try one of the Jumbos, like de SJ-200?. Gibsons are great guitars, but when I bought my last acoustic guitar, I was looking for "THE GUITAR", so I went to a lot of stores in the Miami area, and i think I tryed every acoustic guitar I could find, an let me tell you, never a Gibson sounded better than any Martin, and the Martins were always less expensive... I ended up getting an MMV-GC custom, which is very similar to a D-28, but more affordable. It still is my "dream come" true guitar
I played one at the Gibson Garage last year in Nashville, and that thing was so ridiculously perfect. The one I played was actually a demo, too, and I was still blown away by the quality of the guitar both physically and audibly. People often forget about it or ignore it in the lineup because it’s somewhat of a baby compared to the other more iconic models, but the Songwriter is every bit as good. I’d argue that it’s even better than their iconic models. One of the best in Gibson’s entire acoustic collection.
I had the good fortune of coming into some money once, and I went and shopped just like this. I literally tried everything and paid ZERO attention to price...I just wanted to zero in on a guitar to use LIVE, that played great and sounded great. I already knew that I wanted to use the Crate Telluride Acoustic Amp. SO I plugged in everything that I auditioned into that amp. I have a be honest guys... I tried everything I really wanted to like a Taylor or Martin, and they played great but the electronics were crap, or sounded crap comparatively. I wound up buying a high-end Takamine for around $1600 with case that had their Cool Tube Pre-Amp which I found added a nice saturation for lead and finger style work. Now having said all of that...for the STUDIO, my choice would NOT have been a Takamine although those are also generally more comfortable for me to play traditionally. I have to say that Breedlove mid sized guitars and Martin large guitars always sound best to me in the studio when I am able to use specific mics and techniques that are simply not available in a live setting. If I had to have an all-in-one guitar today, It would probable be a Breedlove paired with an LR Baggs Paracoustic Di plugged in direct for live and mic'd in the studio, maybe even with the DI captured as well.
I have a similar problem. I have an acoustic that is loud, present, articulate, and has impressive dynamic range. Embarrassed by this problem, I solve this by detuning all of those taught strings so they sound like differently pitched flatulence. To complete the modifications, I use an old T-shirt around the neck to keep those strings from vibrating. Lastly, to play CORRECTLY, I hold turn the guitar so the strings rest against my abdomen. Ahhh, perfection.
Now that’s a killer demo! Great to see the final results!
Thanks for jumping in for a second!
Which Martin is Corey playing at the end? Both sound incredible!

I bought my first Songwriter in 2017. It's a Deluxe Model . It's a BADASS Guitar. It's one of Gibsons best Models. And a MARTIN M-36. IS A GREAT GUITAR For recording. Its one of MARTIN'S best keep Secrets.
That one would’ve been my choice. Great job. Enjoy that beautiful guitar.👍🤗
I wish someday i would find one the one for me..congrats.
You picked the one I would have picked. Would love to get some samples of that one!
Exactly the type of sound I’m looking for right now!
Awesome! Hope the video helped!
@@ColtCapperrune absolutely! Just need to find a good used one with similar specs now 👌🏼
I played one at the Gibson Garage last year in Nashville, and that thing was so ridiculously perfect.
No doubt, I would argue this is the best acoustic guitar Gibson makes at the moment!
Great video great music song playing guitar 🎸. So sound great audio. Great show
Thanks so much!
That outro was awesome
I have a similar problem. I have an acoustic that is loud, present, articulate, and has impressive dynamic range. Embarrassed by this problem, I solve this by detuning all of those taught strings so they sound like differently pitched flatulence. To complete the modifications, I use an old T-shirt around the neck to keep those strings from vibrating. Lastly, to play CORRECTLY, I hold turn the guitar so the strings rest against my abdomen. Ahhh, perfection.
Why not a Guild D55
You made the right choice. The Songwriter sounded the best of the three and I don''t have to second guess that.
