Rod is a scaling item and it gives you some tankiness in exchange for it not doing very much in the early game, and Yamato killed veigar three times by then, allowed him to get ahead before veigar got super powerful. He did everything right but is losing it anyways?

This is what separates league from dota. your carry goes 5 damage items nad pops off nad its hype, in dota your carry tanks 5 people and te nkills them because he immuned te chain cc and its over. the CARRY word camefrom carrying all the items of the team you could gift because 1 person with all items is best and he 1v5, no league 1v9 meme, literally walk into enemy base and they can't kill ou and die if they try. critical mass Am, alch, specter, dusa are the most known for. Specter is the ultra late game carry for 1 reason, you killing her kills you. dota is much slower becuase there's so much cc everyone has to tank to not be a camp to be farmed on cd. I get it he is emotional about the game, and has to adopt a play patern that is not enjoyable for him. playing a lot of 1v1 lanes and close range characters from league to dota to smite i've learned that you need some sort of defensive stats or insane escape and if you have insane escape it can't be your damage, if it is its cooked. you need to be in harms way to do damage, even if not aimed at you and others, spell cleave will chunk you anyway so you can get lethaled at any point (he is tilted and runs in, but he opens with E, if he lands or misses he has no more immunity and disruption he's a fair character now gotta pull abilities to use the E, he knows but doesnt want to hold back and play bait). All this to say, if you are ahead, and in dota and smite is so fucking true, but also league, you dont need more damage, you are arleady killing them as is and getting more levels so you will still have damage to beat them, you just need to not die. and with hybrid items and stats (which are by design cheaper) you deny enemy lethal so you can missplay or get caught off guard and its not possible to lose. This is not saying always full tank, but after a core damage item, switching to a defensive 2nd or 3rd locks the opponent to beat you and you control your lead. This is taugh by the existence of Divine Rapier in dota, an item tht gives 330 damage (now has a spell amp version) that's more than 3x the next damage item in the game but you drop on death, so you donr buy this while ahead risking the swing of Networth and power since you lose the item, its the desperation play you need to find damage to kill the enemy cores who are unkillable, its the nuke. its the dusa gyro item to hold highground because they can spread damage and are excelent at using it. In ranked and pubs there's a bit of trolling with the item, but understand there was only 1 meta for about 5 months in 20years this game been worked on that divine is a natural purchase mid build (it was the only 100% truestrike item on top of how you could scale at that time, with refresher bkb 1st 2 items). Similarly in smite some people play melee mages as glass cannons because they are some sustain, but unlike vlad they dont get free extra defensive stats by buying power. zhong, change, jorm, hades, cthulu, cerberus, artio, aphro, Baron even ra. not because they heal only and it makes the Ehp much higher but because to reliably land damage you are at mid range which most other spells hit you reliably so you need to eat damage to do damage and become a drain tank. These are all within the drain tank archetype, and you can't play thos as galss cannons. Fizz is an assassin but unless the game becomes you die for a pick, you need to live after if you can get the pick and in the mid game after you have the damage to get it if you dont die in 1 rotation because you're like 4 or 5 /0 then deny your shutdown. As shown the viego has 1 damage item into a hybrid damage item into tank, he has enough sustain damage to kill the blue team just need to not die in cc. DO you have stats to live the cc -> yes-> you turn and kill reset. Are assassins a feels bad in general in league, i've seen that they are not the best performing but popular. But you can still play them you just adjust, smit has gone from several tank junglers and assassin supports to pick junglers that die for the trade like mercury or thor. pure glass canons but not to 1v5, just making sure the enemy target is dead Idk why i typed so much but someone appealing to something they are account level 20 at is so crazy.
