- Understand why you nosedive, how to avoid it, and what to do to better position yourself to catch more waves.
Nosediving is something we’ve all struggled with while learning how to surf. Catching waves isn’t easy, and there is nothing more frustrating than paddling for a wave, getting ready to pop-up, and instead having your board nosedive and get tossed around in the water.
In this video, we’ll start off by talking about your positioning on the board. Next, we’ll focus on the the angle of the wave, and how where you take off will have a huge effect on avoiding nosediving. Finally, we’ll talk about what to do to successfully catch those waves.
We hope these tips helps you avoid those dreaded nosedives, and gets you up and riding on some waves!

As a nosediver expert, I thank you! The problem is clearer now...not yet the solution :-)
Omg. I just started surfing, and it keeps happening. My dad is screaming at me to go farther back on the board but it’s not working, this helped so much, and it was so well ilastrated! You earned a new sub!
Stoked we could help!
You can also arch your back a little more and move your weight back onto your hips and thighs before you popup. The shorter the board, the more effective this is.
Another thing you can do when you're taking off on a steep face is to point your nose at a slight angle toward the shoulder, this will reduce the effective steepness of the wave face. This will work with long and short boards. These are a little more advanced but good things to learn.
literally same exact thing w me
Listen to your dad... Old guys rule! Lol
This was exactly what I needed and had never heard before.
This was actually useful information. Lots of other videos were just saying you are too far forward on the board etcetc. But I was like...my feet are hanging off and I feel like I am FORCING my board up like having to pull it up before I even get the chance to jump and otherwise I am nose diving. This video helped quite a bit because it is 100% true that I was trying to catch the waves right as they crashed because it gave me a really high "catch" rate but not a high success rate (and I could do it without paddling). Meanwhile the waves I had to paddle for were way more successful. Also I noticed that other surfers were constantly catching waves "higher" while I felt like I was catching them lower...because I was catching them too late. Good video I will for sure take this with me next time as advice!
Hi Malgorbia, we're so glad these tips were useful! We hope they help you next time you're out in the water 🤙
IT DEFINETELY HELPED. Thanks a lot mate!
Super glad to hear it! 🤙
PLEASE make more videos like these! It has been the most precise and helpful I’ve seen!
This helped so much -- thanks guys!!! I especially like the animations. Keep the videos coming. Maybe one on types of boards? Different lengths, styles, when it makes sense to use one or the other, etc
Super helpful vid! Thanks! Also enjoyed the nosedive compilation at the start :D
Quick concise and to the point! Bravo!
quick and straight to the point, nice man.
Thanks man! Such a clear helpful video explained quickly, waves were so steep today all I kept doing was nose diving.
Super clear and informative!
I got TOSSED today on a wave that was probably too big for my skill level, (I’ve only been out 4 times and I catch about 70% of waves I go for. Got too much confidence too quickly and nose dove so hard and was under for a good 15 secs then got hammered by the next wave .5 seconds after surfacing 😂😂 great learning point, I was confused because I wasn’t that far forward on the board but my positioning on the wave probably too close to shore makes a lot of sense.
That’s was so helpful. Thank you.
Thats really helpful info, thanks man.
Yeah im a bodyboarder learning to surf and i kept nose diving on unbroken waves on my first attempt. Naturally i kept moving further back but no matter how far i moved back i still kept nose diving! Will try and catch em earlier!
Thank you so much!!! This really helped me understand. Subbed!
Very short video and to the point. Love it
This was so helpful!! Thank you!! :) :)
Thank you so much! This helped out a lot
This is great! awesome explanation
Thanks for sharing tips!
THANK YOU!!!! AHHH THIS WAS IT
thank you so much for the video i think this is exactly the answer i was searching for
We're happy we could help! Let us know how it goes 🤙
What works for me: staying very near to the board tail (to avoid the nose diving) and start to paddling very early (to get speed and do not stay behind when the wave hit me). I have a longboard 9.1 with soft top, very similar to your board in this video.
Nosediving become very scary when you get inside a wipe out. But its all about time and practice. Thanks for the video.
thanks, this happened to me with a kayak but works for me aswell, now I know I have to catch the wave before when the wave smaller
I was just surfing, and kept nose diving so I'll give you tip a try.
Wow love the animations in this video. I was nose diving at this morning's surf lol hope to try again next time!
We're stoked you like it. Definitely give this a try, and let us know how it goes next time!
Same
Nasal flush was intense yesterday 😂 thank you so much for this video! I will come back to the beach and try applying it in practice 🙏 aloha
Thanks for that
Good tip!
Some great pearling clips!
Haha! A fun one to film for sure.
Hey bro jw if you have more vids? I only see like 7 on your page. Love the content
Yeah . it's help
Ok that makes sense because I’ll be in the perfect position on my board and wonder why the he’ll him I nose diving yesterday I was frustrated because I missed some good waves
We would love to hear what you guys think about this video, as well as any tips you have when it comes to avoiding nosediving and catching more waves!

Goood lesson
What a gamechager this video was for me
Ok, I will try this. Now I understand why with surfing with my feet hanging of the board i still nose dived
Very helpful 👍☺️
Happy it helped!
nice thank u sir
Thanks a lot!!!!
🤙
Hi. Just coming off an 8ft softtop and now transitioning to a real 9ft longboard. First time riding the board i probably
Nosedived almost every wave that i normally ride when im using the softtop. Im
Trying to think maybe im
Positioned to far up front but i feel
Like i should
Be in that spot to be able to catch the wave. Im 5’7 175 lbs on a 9x23x3 longboard. Maybe i just need to move myself back on the back on the board and get used to the sensation of being on the back end of the board and having the nose above the water when dropping in. Thanks for your input and for the videos. 🤙🏽
helped! :)))
Brilliantly explained along with awesome graphics and video footage - many thanks. Do you ever recommend angling the board 20/30 degrees to avoid nose diving too or, in your experience, is it just much better to catch the wave earlier but be pointing directly to the beach?
Hey there,
You can angle the board a bit as well but I would day that’s a bit more advanced. These videos were to help beginners get the hang of it but yes: angling, lifting chest, popping up sooner, etc etc. There’s more options as you evolve. I just need more budget to actually make one of these videos every week. Ha.
Always start the paddle pointing directly at the beach, it's a good habit and helps you catch more waves. You can angle the board in the last 2-3 paddle strokes, which you should be doing to progress anyways. Then, you could try a cobra position before the popup, where you lift your chest off the board with your hands and arch your back. This takes off some of your weight in the front and prepares you for the popup anyways.
It will help, as it makes your board angle less, but it's not the solution. While this may help on longboards, where your board is simply too long to fit into the wave right, a shortboard should have zero issues nosediving due to relative surface area of the wave.
My instructor said im nosediving while paddling because Im not raising my upperbody and Im putting too much weight on my torso. I tried lifting my chest off the board while paddling but this is way too difficult and stressful on my lower back.
Was called "pearling" back in the day. short for pearl diving.
🙏🏽🤙🏽❤️
One thing the video doesn't address is that you also need to angle your board to the left or right... crucial.
They nosedive because their board isn't going fast enough. Moving back on the board will slow them down. Moving to the shoulder will give others who are near the peak the wave. If the wave is too steep, don't attempt it. Move further out - but near the peak so you can get four or five deep paddles in and are at the best part of the wave. Don't move back on the board - instead figure out how to keep your board nice and flat while you paddle - drag kills speed. You want speed.
Should of mentioned the "rocker" in the board and how to use it
Sometimes waves are not enough powerful. The only way is to take off late. With a shortboard it's not a big problem. With a longboard you miss it or you nose dive...
My frustration has been not being at the right place at the right time. I’ll have a set come and find that I’m too close to shore and decide to go a little further out only to find I can’t generate enough paddling speed to catch anything. It could very well be bad technique as I’m still learning. But it does get frustrating being at the wrong spot when the perfect wave for me (my level) rolls through
I get it. It could be a combination of things: paddling technique, positioning on board, positioning in the lineup, etc. Come to Sayulita/ Punta Mita for a few days between Nov-May if you want to work with us and improve your skills.
@@kallecarranza4481 Is this a surf camp?
@@sarahjane4908 No it’s not. :( But if you come down to Sayulita, Mexico, I can help you in person.
@@sarahjane4908 No, but I will be hosting people this upcoming season for intensive camps. I’ll try and let you guys know via RUclips.
You need to be paddling at the same speed as the wave is travelling if not faster. If you get your position right so that the wave picks you up and read the wave better you will have more success. It takes years of time in the water to get it right every time.
so lotsa pearling probably means you're too far inside?
I ignore the small ones because I can never paddle fast enough. Tips ??
Depends on what kind of small waves you're surfing. Any specific spot in particular? The mass of water moves slower towards the beach on small waves than big ones. So small waves should be easier to catch than big ones. Many exceptions, but that's the basic idea.
0:55 however other guy left hand side caught he wave
When did pearling become nosediving?
If you don't know the surf lingo, nosediving is easier to understand than pearling. But for you kind sir, considering you're very aware of surf slang, it can be pearling. :)
Instructions unclear, my cat is now stuck in the toaster
Haha!
Arch your back. Long boards are prone to this
Funny I normally nose dive when i have popped up
you forgot one more thing, if a surfer will not stand at the right time, that can cause a nose dive as well.
and keep your toes off the edge of the board
Or you could just get a short board
Learners won't get much value out of a short board. A mini mal at 8 foot can be duck dived with skill and wih enough rocker ,will paddle better and faster into the peak of the wave. The buoyancy and stability of a mini mal will work better for nailing the basics.
Its funny how One can figure that after a few nose dives hahah now every time o realize i am too late i take the chance to learn how to bail out that way even though i am now catching the wave i am stil traning and learning useful skill in the ocean which make me more confident. Timing i begin to discover as in many other things, is crutial. When and where i catch an incoming wave will determine if i can actually catch it and ride it, like LIFE! HAHAH THANKS NICE AND CLEAR!
