Gerson Ribeiro You’re right, that’s a major problem, despite the rest of the movie being great. Ending it with Javert’s death makes it look like Jean Valjean’s goal for the whole story was just to get rid of Javert. It wasn’t. It was to get rid of his own demons. And his last “demon”, which he defeats by sacrificing himself, was his selfish desire to control Cosette’s life in order not to be alone again. In fact it’s a pity that we didn’t get to see Valjean’s death scene with Neeson and Danes. They were really perfect as Jean and Cosette, and I can only imagine what they could’ve done with what definitely is the most moving scene of the book.
"She has the Lord; he is her father. And you are his creation. In his eyes you never been anything but an innocent, beautiful woman." Awesome quote by Jean Valjean
Amen. And Liam Neeson is absolutely sincere when he says that, as Jean Valjean. You can not only tell it in his demeanor, but in his tone of voice. He was just the right man to fill the role.
One of the most powerful stories of Hope, Struggle, Change, and Redemption as well as an illustration of the ugliness of human suffering. This version of what Victor Hugo wanted to tell his audiences was just absolutely exact and well produced. In those days, life was extremely difficult. No one had an easy life, especially Jean Valjean. Yet, a simple act of kindness... one random act of kindness, even to a convict; changed a man's life forever and gave him hope, and he in turn gave others hope as a "new man, given back to God." I absolutely love the statement the priest made when he looked Valjean dead in the eye, and with love in his heart and said: "Jean Valjean my brother, with this silver, I have bought your soul. I have ransomed you from evil; and give you back to God. You no longer belong to evil. You have promised to become a new man." I have never forgotten these words, or the look on Valjean's face when someone... for the first time in his life showed him one simple thing.... Love. Love is the very element that changes people for the better, and it did. Indeed, Valjean was given back to God. He was ransomed from evil. He was a changed man who returned the same love given to him, even after enduring horrible and unspeakable treatment; to a woman who was suffering and found no value in her life. He reminded her of HER worth, and gave HER back to God, just as the priest did many years before. This powerful story always reminds me of how the power of God and the power of love combined can transform and create beautiful masterpieces out of ordinary people, no matter what they have been through. Truly, Les Miserables is very near and dear to my heart.
Watched the movie 26 years after it came out and came here soon as I finished watching. A masterpiece of acting. Liam Nesson doesn't get the respect he deserves. Also, kudos to Basil Poledouris for this wonderful piece of music. Fits well with the storyline and the scenery. @Jarrah Thank you for uploading this.
I watched this wonderful movie in a small theater in a downtown of Osaka. I remember I bursted into tears to see that Jean Valjean had to say "Good-bye" to his daughter to "compensate what he had done". After that, I bought a DVD of this movie, and watched it again and again. This movie is profound, touching, and appeals me what is important in a man's life and what the life is. Supreme ever!
I am still shocked to the core..when Javert killed himself at the end..his own rigidity and inflexibility of the the human spirit drove to madness..crazy and brilliant!
I am only 17 I've seen this movie twice and it is very inspiring, it shows the way God works in the heart of any who buried there old wicked life behind, He's spirit shows thru their actions, forgiveness, charity. May God work in the heart of so many needed people.
almost 15 years passed and still gives me the chills this masterpiece of pure music full of emotion, passion, melancholy and love......who needs lyrics?
I would risk saying that this is probably the best soundtrack Poledouris has written. Apart from the fact that it should be among the best soundtracks ever written anyway.
@@georgestein5971 Yeah I'm stuck between this one and Conan. Hard to tell which one was the best, but both are classics for sure. Robocop might not be a film as profound as Les Misérables but it had a kickass main theme. He also did stellar work with Starship Troopers.
Either this or FOR LOVE OF THE GAME for me. CONAN has some wonderful music, but it's almost all setpiece stuff. This is a true *score*, in the tradition of Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann -- whereby Poledouris introduces a musical idea/theme and builds upon it, synergetically, from start to finish. With that storytelling component, the music is especially compelling.
Sheer beauty... Makes you feel eternity is at hand. A wonderful piece of music, for a wonderful movie, inspired from Victor Hugo's wonderful novel! After reading the comments below I bought this 1998 Dvd version of Les Misérables, and found out it's an absolute masterpiece. Thanks so much Jarrah for posting this beautiful music, ad-free: This is priceless!
They nailed the story so wonderfully. All they needed was just another 30 minutes to make it perfectly. I read the unabridged English translation and loved it.
Leí los Miserables de Victor Hugo , cuando tenía 14 años . Vi esta película que junto con está banda de sonido siempre me emocionan hasta lo más profundo .
Javert is my favotite character. I'd rather see him not kill himself, but if he didn't, I would not have loved him as much. He is so complex and intriguing. He holds everyone to the same standard and is all about principles. A true embodiment of law and order.
This beautiful suite expresses the long struggle of a man against himself and against the world he has to live and is a joyous expression of his triumph in the face of adversity. The movie is memorable too.
these parts are playing on the scene that Valjean and Fantine having breakfast together..i am planning to read the book again and afterwards watch the movie once more.
Les Mis has no business being a musical. Hugo's masterpiece is a dark, loving, passionately riveting story! I love the musical to death, but for those who have read the book, you would also understand that the musical is a very lighthearted version Victor Hugo's Les Miserables.
One of my favourite films ever. It’s also another of my favourite books, and even though this film cuts quite a lot of the second half, it’s still hands-down the best adaptation in terms of acting, pacing, drama, emotion, and of course this stunning music!

I was on "les miserables" in Poland, and this is my favourite soundtrack, when I driving by car, radio to the max and only me and this fantastic music....
In my opinion, this 1998 version of Les Miserables is the best one.
Absolutely agree with you. We purchased the movie. This music should have won an Oscar in my humble opinion.
I don't think so, Valjean was supposed to die at the end.
