Just replaced my alternator on my 2005 2.4 non-Turbo PT Cruiser yesterday. It has 178,000+ miles on it. I started off doing it according to the manual, but got frustrated with all the extra stuff they require you to remove. While struggling to get the wiring disconnected, I came across your youtube video. I put everything back and did it your way. It was sooooo much easier! Thank you so much for posting this!
Excellent video with the "easy way" of not removing the entire wheel and axle assemblies. Super clear explanation and your video was nice and crisp and focused! If I hadn't bought the alternator locally already I'd have used your shop link. Cheers!
Omg you have helped me a lot. I didn’t know I could get a alternator from a junk yard. I don’t have 155.00 bucks right now so I’m gonna try a savage yard. Thanks so very much for your great knowledge. Great helpful video 👍
Thank your very much for the kind words. If you have time to wait ebay is another option , they have used ones for as little as $40 and that's with shipping . They have a money back guarantee so if it doesn't work you get a refund or replacement no questions asked. But I'm with you $155 is more than I'm willing to shell out . Best of luck on it , and again thanks for watching and Happy New Year .
One BIG problem with parts from a junk yard is, #1 your doing the job twice, and you really don't know if you picked a good one until it's out and in your hands. Sure you can bring it back and get another, but you don't get back the time it took to take the thing out in the first place. Always remember........, it's in the junk yard for a reason.
I was too the first one and didn't know what I was doing , I basically went to removing things until it came out . I mentioned in the video about the shop manual stating removal of the cv axle I didn't want to go that route , this wasn't too bad , and while you're at it you can check out the motor mounts and see if they need replacing . The main thing is to take your time and be safe , always safety first . I hope all goes smoothly and the video helps you help thanks for watching
$30 bucks, can't beat that. Only concern might be the total amp output but it should be pretty close I'd think. You did a nice job of documenting and explaining the replacement. I like your way better too since any excuse not to pull an axle out is a good one! Thanks!
+Baxrok2 thanks I appreciate the feedback . I just remember it was very hot that particular day . I've done few others this way and I still remember my first one and there very well may have been some cursing involved once I realized what had to be done for it to fit out the limited space lol. After acceptance sets in its not so bad the second go round . I really like salvage yards in certain situations it's nice to not be out a $160 to get up and running again. I still have to do valve cover gaskets I didn't happen to have them laying around and part store wanted $45 . So $7 I decided to order them instead , I don't mind waiting sometimes . Thanks again for watching
For me after 20 years (I have a 2001) I had to change my steering rack so with the rack and cross member (K frame) I dropped the alternator and replaced it with a new higher amp alternator since there were no restrictions after the cross member was taken out.
Great video I tried going from the top but it was a mess and was still not able to get the alternator out. I will try this method out just never messed with motor mounts. For us newbies it would have been awesome if you showed us that step than it will have been 100% DIY type of video
Make sure and be safe and support the engine from falling . I used blocks myself , I've also used cherry picker. An impact wrench makes things easier of course , the toughest one to get loose is the main engine mount the others are very simple . It may seem like alot but really it's not and considering the time wasted through other means it's actually pretty quick and with just a slight forward movement of the engine it gives the extra room needed for removal. But like I said the mounts aren't really a big deal just a matter of getting them loose and putting them back . Definitely allow plenty of time if it's your first go at it for any problems issues . I spent a couple afternoons on this project myself working a few hours each day . Hope this has been helpful , I will take your advice and do a video in the future focusing just on the mounts themselves . Thanks for watching and your feedback.
Thank you for watching , the pt cruisers get a bad name in some ways for being cramped but there are cars with harder to get at alternators than these. Its a good time to inspect those motor mounts while you're at it .Best of luck on yours always safety first and thanks again for watching
God I'm glad I watched this before doing this job on a customer car tomorrow. I so don't like pulling axles unless I'm replacing the axle to start with. Going to do it this way. Thanks
I thank you for the kind words and I hope all goes smoothly. I'm glad when someone can appreciate an different way and find it helpful. Thanks again for watching
+Jim Gracey yes it's not fun , but I have done several this way and it works . Shops charge a lot for this . It's really not that difficult I would recommend an impact for some of the removal mounts etc . It just speeds things up . However be cautious on the T 55 main engine mount those things are tight if it hasn't been messed with before . Thanks alot for watching and best of luck on your project .
Phillip Hall I was referring to the Torx 55 head bolt that goes through the passenger fender into the main engine mount and supporting bracket covering the timing cover . It's the main mount and the one that's difficult to replace . That bolt can be very difficult to remove sometimes I've snapped off a 3/8 adapter before getting one loose . Hope this has been helpful and thanks for watching .
I have an 05', the amount of repairs needed by my 120k miles is unreal. Preventative maintenance in owners manual is the vague thing possible when essential components are needing replaced before 100k miles.
These pt cruisers are plagued with problems for sure. It does not make it fun with the limited room under the hood either. I know I have worked on many , it seems once you have replaced all the major parts , mounts , timing assembly etc they do okay. Alot of issues with the electric fans too . The whole assembly needs replaced or they can overheat an engine quick on these. Best of luck on yours and thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching.
Yes , the service manual actually calls for the cv axle removal to squeeze the alternator out . Which cv axle removal isn't just popping a cv axle out , there's numerous other things that need removed prior to that. Then you have the occasional cv axle getting stuck , and there's the likely hood of replacing the cv axle seal since it was disturbed , plus transmission fluid loss , no doubt an alignment would be called for in near future because knuckle was disturbed . I haven't tried it that way but might the next opportunity just to see which is the bigger pain , but my guess is on the cv removal. I've done it this way several times and it doesn't seem to bad , but it still requires a lot of caution because basically the entire engine is just resting on the jack and safety supports. Rigging up a cherry picker could add some safety . Thanks for watching and the feedback
in another video a guy removed the coolant reservoir and heat shield. no motor mounts and no tensioner bolt. with the right tools it looked easier and quicker.
@@larrydennis5826 I took mine to the mechanic. $275 labor. Physically that was the easiest avenue. With my new job I don't think I'll be doing a lot of repairs myself anymore. Won't have the time but plenty of money.

I've spent 3 hours trying to get the damn thing out, I ended up breaking my power steering line in the process as the alternator sat on it and rust helped it rip off. I hate this car. I would love to know who designed this (specifically the alternator location). I cant get it out. I've tried everything except the axel which I should have done from the beginning cause it would have been so much faster overall. I tried from above and below. I am going to remove that bracket you said had 15mm on top. I felt around and felt them. what a pain. Can you move the engine forward with a 2X4 without removing other bolts?
Yes it's work pretty much anyway you go about it , reminds me of the way I felt first one I removed on a pt cruiser . Those 15mm indeed need to come out , that's one of most difficult . They are easier to feel for than to try and see and remove without laying under the car. They will be tight cheater bar or extended ratchet handle a must. With that alternator loose shove it back out of your way so you can work. Once you get the bracket with the 15mm it doesn't take much movement of the engine to slide it out . You can use a 2x4 or just tug on the engine by hand , doesn't take a lot to move it with the mounts loose . If you already have all the mounts loose you are just as well to remove it without taking the cv axle . I thought this was the worst alternator placement until I got a Mazda tribute . Anyways hope this can help and thank you for watching .
