1966 is my favorite year for all Fender guitars: I have never played a bad one. It also appears that by that time they worked out all the bugs from the variations of the previous years. Open for discussion.
'66 is a cool year for Jazzmasters. Lotsa cosmetic variety. Mine has the bound fretboard, and block inlays too, but the older headstock decal with the smaller "Jazzmaster" lettering. And the most comfy neck of any Fender I've ever played. Love me a JM!
Cade Troëne everyone fits a stereotype, doesn’t mean they can’t comment on a other stereotype. And he’s not singling anyone out it’s a joke dude, chill
Hey you played Rock Lobster! Cool. I was a little disappointed when you said, "Hipster jams" , then used a heavy tremolo and didn't even touch "How Soon Is Now?"
Yikes I'm a huge Smiths fan, didn't mean to offend anyone! I was just going along with Mark's caustic view of Indie music, sorry if I worded myself poorly : )
Love this series. And finally an amp worthy of the guitar. That deluxe reverb tone is so much better than the Hot Rod he normally uses. I wish the switch would be permanent, or that they would break out some of the new Tweed reissues.. The Hot Rod is just so shrill
What beautiful noises that jazzmaster makes. Middle position is the most interesting to me, but they're all nice. Somehow, and I'm not sure what it is, but it almost gives off an acoustic sort of vibe in the bass. I'll never be able to either afford or justify a vintage fender, what with my non-existent guitar skills, but if I could this might be right up there at the top of the list.
I'd like a Tele with a jazzy neck pickup. that would be the perfect blend between the twangy bridge with its kid of flatter growlier sound. Props to Joe for playing my Favourite Gibby last week!
Fender put out a few Strats with a bound board in 66 as the necks are the same scale length as the Jazzmaster, usually in a custom colour too, it's a shame they didn't continue with that configuration, sweet guitar btw !!, Peace.
Mark's comments about '66 Fenders starting at 1:57 or so are right on the money. Best line: "They didn't, like, throw all this shit away when they took over." 1966 Fenders are still the same (outside of headstock design changes) as pre-CBS instruments. It's the same parts, finishes, and workers. He's right - '66 is a great year for Fenders, and they cost less on the vintage market than a guitar one year older, a '65, pre-CBS guitar. I have a '66 Strat that I've bragged about before on youtube and it's as good if not better than about 80% of all the Strats I've ever heard or played. A great product is a great product. Period.
P.S. I would die to own a Jazzmaster as clean and great sounding as this one. I'd frankly rather own a Jazzmaster than a Tele. Very seductive and more powerful and edgy than you might think. In the 60's lots of country players were using them, along with the Surf bands. IMHO, the Jaguar is a poor substitute for the Jazzmaster, even though Jaguars are hip to play right now. Chintzy sound. I have a '68 Tele that's excellent, but I'd trade it and then some for a nice mid-60's Jazzmaster.
larry geetar dude. No joke. I have my Tele. Its a 94 or 95squire. Messican. It's been a great guitar to me for 20+years. I got an indo made jazzy last year..........its a great guitar!!!!!!
Yes, Mark you are correct. When CBS Bought the barn and all the parts in it from Leo, they would have been stupid to toss out all the parts. More importantly... if Leo had not sold the company that year, HE would have kept using all the same parts. So the truth is this is all LEO and not any CBS tom-foolery. Nice Video. BM
I'll bet I caused trouble for Mark on instagram that day. Sorry, Markster. This '66 sounded great enough for an Italian Spaghetti Western for sure. Sans-Hipster-Beard
I'm wondering what that was about with lowing the pitch of the E string for Rock Lobster. Was that one full tone? Is that a particular kind of alternate tuning? Thanks for the help.
Lowered TWO full tones, That approximates the baritone guitar sound of the original. It's called Drop C tuning, as opposed to the more popular and familiar Drop D, which is done by dropping the 6th (E) string down one tone to D. At the end of the vid, you see him playing a 1st position C chord with the open 6th string, which is now C instead of E.
to get even more specific. the tuning on the original was CFxxFF. the two middle strings were removed and the two Fs were tuned in unison for the "down" part of the song
Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon. Definitive and best known version by Gary Puckett. Neil Diamond wrote it and recorded it in 1967, with Puckett's in 1969. The Urge Overkill version referred to previously came from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack
Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon. Neil Diamond composition recorded in 1967 then again with a bigger impact in '69 by Gary Puckett. Also from Pulp Fiction soundtrack by Urge Overkill.
My teacher has a 1966 jazz master and he let me play it today. It was AMAZING
That's the best sounding guitar I've heard in a very long time....
I have the vintera reissue in olympic white and I absolutely adore it, I can only imagine what a legit 66 feels like
1966 is my favorite year for all Fender guitars: I have never played a bad one. It also appears that by that time they worked out all the bugs from the variations of the previous years. Open for discussion.
Perfect tune selection, perfect tone, thanks!

I'm surprised you haven't made a shirt saying, "All EQs at noon, Little bit o reverb."
I'd buy one
I hope it's a thing!
me too :)
10/10 would buy.
He has now ;)
>stereotypes a person
>is literally a stereotype of a group of people themselves
Cade Troëne everyone fits a stereotype, doesn’t mean they can’t comment on a other stereotype. And he’s not singling anyone out it’s a joke dude, chill
Hey you played Rock Lobster! Cool. I was a little disappointed when you said, "Hipster jams" , then used a heavy tremolo and didn't even touch "How Soon Is Now?"
Desmond Teague woah, dude. nothing the smiths made is a "hipster jam"
You are calling the smiths hipster? Jeez get a grip man! How Soon Is Now is honestly a wonderful song.
Yikes I'm a huge Smiths fan, didn't mean to offend anyone! I was just going along with Mark's caustic view of Indie music, sorry if I worded myself poorly : )
Desmond Teague god bless no harm done.
the smiths are the prototypical hipster band, to such an extent that interest has looped around and they are currently not hipster enough
love guitar of the day "all eq at noon lil bit of reverb" tshirt needed :) Mark is the man!
If someone makes a tshirt with that on it, I'll be first to buy it
Come on just because they became popular in 90s with alternative rock and post punk doesn't mean it's a hipster thing
Jags and Jazzmasters are my favorite guitars. Love em!
Lots has changed @ Normans for Norm & Mark!
love the b52s

Great playing as always. Girl You will be a woman soon was great. My dad would have loved the Venture's tune. Thanks for video.
Awesome! Especially Rock Lobster!
I'd like a Tele with a jazzy neck pickup. that would be the perfect blend between the twangy bridge with its kid of flatter growlier sound. Props to Joe for playing my Favourite Gibby last week!
Must buy now....

Nice paint job. It sounds great too. Really nice.
Thom Yorke Has One Exactly Like This
I think his is a 63.
Wow that thing is clean !
UNIQUE SOUNDS FROM THESE INSTRUMENTS

freaking love all the things about this guitar except the bridge, oh the bridge i mean what were they thinking

love
Forget the hipsters and just love the Jazzmasters
I'll bet I caused trouble for Mark on instagram that day. Sorry, Markster. This '66 sounded great enough for an Italian Spaghetti Western for sure. Sans-Hipster-Beard
Awwman that thing is clean!
Who in the hell thinks the Jazzmaster tremolo sucks? Sure it doesn't dive worth shit but who really wants to do that? It emphasizes notes like crazy.
I find it way smoother and comfortable with the long arm to play than a strat style trem 😎
Maybe it IS the current douchy hipster guitar to have right now...but getting a JM was the best thing I ever did.
Damn cool guitar. Great job Mark.
2:16 Unusual accident.
Happens to me every time I stand up to solo that needs some Vibrato
He just didn’t push it deep enough.
That's what she said
i think mr joe bonnamasa may have purchased that blackguard tele he was the last dude seen playing it hey maybe im wrong who knows.
That really is a nice guitar.
Fantastic playing!!!! Fucking great guitar too.
I want to know if this guitar is good for a Thrash Metal?
I LOVE JAZZMASTERS!
Jazzmaster has the sound of the 60’s the Ventures
Great Guitar, which strings do yo use!
the real question, does Mark wear a Rolex? Can't get a good enough still shot to see. Love the videos!
He wears a Timex
It’s still white too. I figured it would fade being that old.
Is it true that jazzmaster is too big for a standard regular gig bag??
Nice Jazz
Do you guys ever get any vintage Yamaha guitars?
I'm wondering what that was about with lowing the pitch of the E string for Rock Lobster. Was that one full tone? Is that a particular kind of alternate tuning? Thanks for the help.

Is this the same model Thom Yorke used?
Man or astroman! Nice
Mark, I don't think you have that Rock Lobster riff quite right!
Did John 5 buy the Blackguard?
Agnesi got sales schtick down pat
What did that sell for, I presume it went within hours.
The Pulp Episode [with tremolo ejection]
it feels like i watch pulp fiction
That beautiful guitar deserves better.
Glad he played "Girl You'll Be A woman Soon".
Hi Mark
fucking cool guitar !!!!!
I thought he was going to play Longview for a second when he played the second song.
How are JMs hipster guitars?
Interesting sounds. Do a real flying V
This is my dream guitar, can anyone tell me where to get one for under 1000? That’s prob impossible
Anyone know what the blackguard tele sold for?
What was the surf song?
Pipeline by The Chantays
Thank you
+Rodrigo Palmieri and Johnny Thunders!
Pipeline by the Chantays
Wouldn't a '66 have block inlays?
lol didnt know jazz masters were hipster guitars still think they are great though lol
This amp sounds so much better...
Hey Mark, what song are you playing at the start?
You need to watch pulp fiction asap
I don't remember the song title I think it's called "you will be a woman soon". I know it's a line in the song. hope it helps!
"Girl, you'll be a woman soon" by Neil Diamond and covered by Urge Overkill for Pulp Fiction.
Ramkix Vincent I know where it's from I never got the name though
TimB4305 Thank you
I have the same guitar, but it's an american vintage reissue
I think David Kilgour uses this style of guitar
I have a jazzmaster, I built it myself
What is the third song?
My tip of the day. refresh your jazzmaster finger boards with mineral oil!
what was the song of the minute 5:23 ? Help :(
Rock Lobster, by The B-52's.
rock lobster
i don't know but this dude looks like a hipster to me .
Goggle products wtf

did joe bonamassa bought the tele lol?
Play "the Cure" with a Jazz Master!
Or Sonic youth.
Or Oingo Boingo
whats the first song??
Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon, by Urge Overkill.
Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon. Definitive and best known version by Gary
Puckett. Neil Diamond wrote it and recorded it in 1967, with Puckett's
in 1969. The Urge Overkill version referred to previously came from the
Pulp Fiction soundtrack
Put a snark on it for tone
I can't figure out what the middle song is. someone help
Pipeline.
"Girl you'll be a woman soon". Nice selection.
Haa hipster thats me this guiyst is used in every type of music get with it daddio
that doesn't look that authentic
Jazzmasters were here before hipsters, Jazzmasters will be here after hipsters, hipsters are irrelevant.
I’d still rather watch Mark than Limo, even when he plays Jazzmasters 😄
WHAT, THE HOT ROD DEVILLE'S GONE? i know its just for today but its weird
What's the first song?
Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon. Neil Diamond composition recorded in 1967
then again with a bigger impact in '69 by Gary Puckett. Also from Pulp Fiction
soundtrack by Urge Overkill.
"Hipster jams"?
In the bridge almost sounds like a baritone.
Any man who has a mistrust of hipsters instantly has the trust of myself.
John Lennon used one 1965 in Austria!!!!
Sean Lennon sort of does too. Modern boutique luthier versions.
4:38 music? PLEASE
pipeline
Hipster said what?
5:23 Iark lobster ?
Rock lobster by the B52s
Thom
True hipsters must start abandoning their offsets and going back to strats.
Panic at the disco holy shit
MJFAN2220 actually its rock lobster, the song that panic at the disco stole that riff from
Hal0Sux they didn’t actually steal it - they actually asked the B-52s for usage and still have to pay royalties every time they play it live
Play some smiths!!
