If I'm not mistaken, this was the first tour where Devo played along with a click/sequencer track. They did this so they could stay in sync with all of the visuals that were being projected on the screens. This tour was basically designed to be like live presentations of their music videos...at least for the "Oh, No!" material. That's one reason why they had so many technical difficulties this night. As Alice said, Alan was trying his best.
This tour was plagued with technical problems because they were attempting things that were not yet possible. Syncing to a filmed backdrop had never been done before. I was very fortunate, everything worked when I saw them in San Francisco.
The Volcano Worshpers Club It was pretty ingenious actually, the film had a stereo track. One channel was that eight-note synthesizer pulse that ran through most of Oh No It's Devo, but the other channel was a click track that only the band could hear.
When I was 11 my parents took me to a show on this tour: it was the three of us, my younger brother, who was about 8, and my best friend. They did an electronic first set, then came back with regular instruments for the second set. My mind was totally blown. Part of that could have been all the pot smoke in the air, but it was just an amazing first concert. It was like being on the best acid trip ever; I felt like I had spent two hours on Mars or something. At that point all I really had known was Whip it and that they were some kind of New Wave or Post Punk band, but I couldn't get the rest of their records fast enough 😛
matthew cohen ha! that's funny because i was 11 when i went to see them for this tour also! i went with my brother in san diego. i remember it starting essentially like this did and loving it. i only knew a few songs maybe from nutra along with a few older ones. my sister had seen them for that nutra tour and she had a copy of that concert live. that's how i heard of them. i coulda bought the "oh, no!" album b4 i went to the concert, but i got something else. but when i did buy the album and put the first song on - flashback! it was just like hearing the concert. i've been a fan ever since, despite all the "devo sucks!" i've heard throughout my years. it was ok because i developed thick skin from being a kiss fan!
I remember this concert. I was there. This was the Halloween Show at Universal Amphitheater at Universal Studios, Hollywood, California. I was sitting in the mezzanine and was blown away by all the 3-D effects. Thanks for the post. This was one of the greatest concerts of my life despite the technical difficulties.
Let's not forget: This was the dawning of their electronic drums age -- not shown very well here -- but it was not a happy time for Mr. Myers. I've watched this vid several times, and I always see something new, but "joy" isn't one thing I see here. They were fighting for their artistic lives. Thanks, Big Daddy Knowitall (and the other record execs) -- thanks for nothing. -- Adirondack Bruce, the frozen spud
"I've watched this vid several times, and I always see something new, but "joy" isn't one thing I see here." Which makes the title and theme of the song quite ironic!
saw this performance at the Paramount at NYC, amazing Devo Rules, Mothersbaugh Bross and the rest of Band , outstanding, New Wave on his best performers.
Is there any way at all to get this show entirely uncut? I tried Booji Boy's basement, but he must not be getting my messages. Please help, I love this show!

To: x1AliceAmberstone1x -- Yes. While downright "academic" to comment on what went through their minds then, (A) the book "We Are Devo" explains some of what was happening behind the scenes, and (B) we can all chalk it up to doing what (those of us so-called "adults" were up to in the '80s: Pushing the envelope right off the table, across the floor, and out the door. Hmmmm. Very poetic. Someone wanna write a song using those words? All yours. Be stiff, spuds! -- Adirondack Bruce

@adirondackbruce I absolutely agree. Somethings are worth being scrapped, and sometimes it's hard to see people being put up to metaphorically hang especially a favorite band but sometimes the innovative can be downright stupid. I'm just not certain if it was a smart move but ah well.
great stuff! hmm - is that Mick Fleetwood in the audience behind the two heavyweight spuds at 0:08??? This is a massive body of evidence you have posted. Duty Now!
wasnt the first show, there are multiple people who saw the show before this (the oh no! portion) and talked about how everything worked exactly and how fucking *loud* it was
Non-fans are reticent to move to music they don't know. Their common refrain is: It was okay. I only knew Whip It or Surrender or Rock and Roll ALL Night. At least you don't hear The complaint " they play to many ballads. By the way I prefer KISS PSYCHO CIRCUS In 3D lol🤑

I wonder what happened if the synthesizer music didn't work? I know that Weird Al has a backup song in case of some sort of tech difficulties.

Lee Presson That's good.
It had been done before this. Pink Floyd was doing this in like. The late 70s. Devo though tried a different approach

2:30 Oh I'm llistening to you devo!!!
Is it me or am I right in saying that there is something intrinsicly so very wrong when music is playing and people are sedentary. [very confused]
