  • Tennis is the third most popular sport in the world, with over a billion fans globally. It's played on every continent and enjoyed by many. However, with the current tennis system, barely 400 players are able to earn a living wage, while less popular sports can support many more athletes. Novak Djokovic believes a players association such as the PTPA can help with this problem.

Just think about it, he gains nothing personally from saying this. Yes it might persuade some people to reconsider whether they still don't like him and that might increase his popularity. Most who dislike novak and idolise Rafa and Roger will probably never change their views and they'll look for any excuse to confirm their bias.
No doubt in my mind Novak is a great tennis player and an even greater human being, wonderful intelligent guy. I xuspect deep down he's somewhat embarrassed with the obscene wealth he has amassed, though of course he deserves it, but he knows how absurd it is for someone to be so wealthy just because they are great at sport.
Of course the huge money in sport is not because anyone wants to make these icons super rich, it's about creating a circus of wealth and privilege where those with deep pockets can spend their riches, just like F1, Ocean Yacht racing and the fancy hospitality suites at football and rugby matches. Just another example of how money destroys everything. It doesn't have to be that way, money could be redirected, as Novak is suggesting for the greater good, but humans are too selfish and greedy for that I'm afraid.

    Novak,
I don't know if you read these comments, but I wanted to add. The sport provides 7% of total revenues to the players. That means 93% goes to non-players. When did you EVER see a fan say that they went to a tournament to watch the administrators administering a tournament?
In the US team sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, etc), there is ONE players association, who have negotiated with the administrators, and the revenue split is 50/50.
What tennis also does WRONG, is it allows this crazy situation where individual tournaments arrange revenue streams. A grand slam will have greater power in negotiations than a tiny tournament, obviously. But this is a real problem. And there is the ATP, WTA, ITF, and 4 grand slams, all doing separate things. What SHOULD be happening, is that they should ALL come together under one umbrella, and negotiate a global deal with the biggest media companies, with a single voice.
I hate to say it, but the mid tier tennis players are getting robbed, given what they do. Even the top guys (Carlos, Novak) are only getting what the 250th NFL player gets as a "wage" (I'm talking prizemoney only, not endorsements). And can you honestly believe that Carlos is only equivalent to the 250th best NFL player???
Individual players have expenses of roughly $120,000 a year, to put together a VERY modest team and travelling budget. Bigger players will have bigger expenses because their tams are bigger. And how many players actually earn this much in a year? As reported on Tennis HQ (Karue Sell) ~75% of players earn less than a Starbucks barista.
I think the solution needs to be for someone to really shake up the tennis world. We saw cricket have its moment like this,. along with rugby league. And these are relatively small sports. Golf has recently gone through this. Tennis needs a big promoter (for example Ion Tiriac maybe), to get together with a rich nation (maybe Norway, which has a huge sovereign wealth fund), and create a parallel tour, funding it in such a way that the top players get similar "wages" to other sports. Maybe give them a rolling monthly cheque for their ranking points, paid from a central fund, to ensure that players ranked from (insert an arbitrary threshold - 1,000?) and up, get not just a living wage, but something really special to reflect their global achievement in the worlds 4th most popular sport.
Once the breakaway tour puts pressure on the establishment, they should then merge, and go forwards together, but with the PLAYERS at the center, not the administrators. Because the administrators are just ripping the money out of the system, and the players are the ones working their asses off to get breadcrumbs that fall from the fat tournament directors tables.
Oh, and by the way, I live in Benahavis, and have been to Soto and Puerto many times. I'd love to see you in person one day. Karolina Pliskova trains at Sergio's academy in Cancelada, and I see her there all the time. I'd love to be able to say I've seen BOTH the mens and womens world number one in my lifetime. Good luck at the USO Novak. I hope you bring it home and continue extending your records.

One thing to add. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens without a lockout, or at least a threat of a lockout. Just recently the ATP and WTA announced some changes, but all that happened only because of PTPA. they didn't, at least not publicly, call for any strikes, but just the notion that they exist means something.

      Interesting and informative.
With the exception of the grand slams, on the rest of the tour there are too many meaningless games between ill-matched players and not enough turns on the result.
Using football (i.e. soccer) as a model, how about introducing a league and cup system, whereby the grand slams are left as "cup" competitions, in which the top 150 or whatever compete in a free for all, but over the rest of the year the players, divided into many leagues, only compete with other players in the same league, the winner of the league being the player who accumulates the most points over the season?

@@jackburgess274 To b honest Jack, I'm not sure how your proposal differs much from the current state. If I can paraphrase, the grand slams are already a "cup" scenario, because the top 104 or so get direct entry; the rest are made up of qualies, with a few wild cards here and there.
The rest of the year, as you say, we already have a "league." This is the combination of ITF, future, challenger, tour, masters, at the various levels.
The thing is, tennis is almost artificially "leagued up" in that prizemoney is so rubbish, players often stay in their own region, and play their own lower level tourneys (eg ITF15), because they cant afford to play bigger, further tourneys. Look at Oceania, for example. An ITF tourney in, say, New Zealand, will have something like 95% of the players being locals. It's a small tournament, and not worth an American player (just as an example) to travel and spend maybe $5,000 to play it, to get prizemoney of practically zero for winning the tournament, let alone run the risk of being knocked out in the first round.
And this is what my biggest gripe is. Prizemoney, or the lack of it. If you look at, lets say, the 1000th best doctor/lawyer/IT specialist/STEM engineer/researcher/PHD candidate in the world, what do these people earn? A tennis player that has been honing their craft for maybe 15 years before competing, gets absolutely rubbish remuneration by comparison.
Someone who is the #1000 male or female tennis player in the worlds 4th most popular sport, is not a multi-millionaire from their sport. In fact, chances are, they're living at home with mum and dad, or if they're lucky, they have a part time job paying for a small apartment, and pretty far from what the 1000th best doctor in the world is doing.
And just to really put it into perspective; a few years ago, I looked at Noah Rubin. He was ranked about #125 in the world. His expenses for the year were something like $120,000 (flights, hotels, coaching, physio, massage, equipment, countless restrings), and that was just for himself. He couldn't afford to bring a coach with him. That year, he made about $150,000 in prizemoney - a good year for him. And that means, the #125 in the WORLD, made about $30,000, for a years effort. That same year, the NBA draft saw the #125 pick get a contract. I'll tell you what they got later. But just think, that this player was a college player, and not the 125 best in the world. There were already teams in the US league with full playing rosters. There are also overseas teams as well. He may well have been the #3000 in the world for all we know. But by comparison, Noah, being #125 in the world, in the worlds 4th most popular sport, earned $30,000. The NBA player got a contract for $11.7M.
The whole system of tennis player remuneration stinks.

Novak is p**ing off the tennis elite, and some ATP chiefs are wondering why does he do that, when he's the most paid player in the whole tour. Reality is - Nole is just an amazing human being. Genuine, humble, and helping. And mass media finds it tough to swallow that the worlds best athlete doesn't care about the sport, he is more concerned about other problems, and helping others. Just like Jokic who is 2X MVP, FVMP, and an NBA winner and admitted without any guilt he's an NBA player because of the high salary.

It's the dirty little secret of tennis. You can't make a living unless you're at or near the top. I actually think that's why we saw the dominance of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic the way we did. The sport has gotten so expensive. You're barely making it if you make $100,000 a year. The sport is so financially brutal on new talent that unless you have success right away most can't stick around long enough to develop properly.

Novak Djokovic has the qualities of a good, political leader. I admire his duty to serve and the willingness to take responsibility to find solutions and being two steps ahead to identify and preventing issues from arising which is a fundamental quality of a good leader. I come from a political family background (My great grandfather was PM of Greece) and I understand what it takes to be a good political leader. I don't know if he wants to be involved in politics following his professional sporting career, to serve his country Serbia, but judging by his actions, he made the Serbian President and PM looking like amateurs. I'll leave it to that.

I know that this might deter some from being a tennis player, but perhaps encourage the education system to place a bit more emphasis on financial literacy, learning about how to earn money, how businesses run, and so forth. That way, they get to make more informed decisions about when and if they decide to become professional or even be involved in the business aspect of tennis, where they're more familiar with how to generate and distribute revenue.
I'm not sure how many players have those skills or are adept in that area, but I think that's important.
Of course, after hearing some stories about how some players spend, I think it's definitely very important that there's emphasis on practicing good spending habits.

This is why i have a lot of respect for Djokovic, he speaks for the lower ranked players that barely make enough to make ends meet. Because as a lower ranked player, it is too costly to sustain everything from the travelling, coaches and having the necessary tools for the sport. They just don't pay enough for those players to make a living from it. I also never hear Federer and Nadal speaking up for these players the same way Djokovic does. Being in a privileged position that they're in you would think they would speak more on it, but they never do, which is a shame. Because i feel like the more the top players shed light on this situation. The better the chances there is to increase the pay for these players from the tennis association.

I don't understand why so many non-athlete tennis watchers were hating on Djokovic for the idea of creating a union. Did they think every professional tennis player gets paid the same wage as a pro grand slam quarter-finalist? I think for the majority of talented players, the compensation to effort ratio that tennis brings is even lower than that of a desk job at a medium-sized company.

players in the top 100 can change that, it’s not about feeling sorry for people that chose a sport for a living (or trying making a living) ‘cause we do live in a market society and you take it or leave it…but when you have brands and corporations benefiting from all 100% of the players that make up the sport (rich and poor) then you have an argument within that bubble. So pay up…a collective bargaining is totally possible and can be struck if there is union (a UNION) amongst all the players that make the sport and the tournaments possible. He is hinting at that, and it can’t be overstated how on point this guy is.
