Rudy: Most people starting out will use binders and those white cardboard boxes and all that. Me, organizing my cards while watching the vid: Why you gotta call me out like that?
I've been watching this guy for YEARS. I have no idea about any of the cards he deals with and collect none of them. I just find him fascinating to watch! Really cool and informative guy.
I literally had this conversation with a shop yesterday about the safe/vault and it’s quality. You guys with products of value in a sentry safes from Walmart may as well leave them on the floor. Please take the advice Rudy is offering!! Me - a locksmith of 18 years.
@@thedarkness125 Sure they can lol. By that logic, anybody can perform surgery, and they pay doctors way too much to do it. Lockpicking isn't a basic skill.
Pretty ridiculous though, to say get a house first before investing in magic...how would you get the money for real estate in the first place if not by investing in cheaper assets first?
@@WinterblastHalls Fair to say if you have a house, youre deeply in debt with a mortgage so investing doesn't really make sense either way. A risk is a risk, but on average apartment fires do happen and you have no time to collect boxes on the way out.
@@WinterblastHalls The problem is, you buying collectibles while paying rent on the storage for it puts you in the same position as an LGS, except you have no foot traffic or store. You get the money for real estate by working a lot of hours at a job and going to absolutely minimum expenses. You also move to a place that has an economic situation favoring home ownership, and where the pay for jobs you can get in the area allows you to afford it. You're acting like this entire thing should just be a gift to be handed to you. the safe makes so much sense. i've heard SO MANY stories of stores that have gone under because someone broke in, broke the glass case, and stole all the high value cards.

Rudy, you want media/data safes. The insulation in a standard gun safe will protect against a fire, but will also release a ton of moisture onto all of your cardboard in the event of a fire. That precious cardboard will be effectively stuck & melted together. Get a safe for media storage which will protect from both fire and be insulated to also keep humidity in check. My 2 cents.
As I get closer to opening my own shop I love coming back and watching videos like this. Important food for thought as I plan everything out. Thanks again Rudy
I always budget 10% of whatever I spend on security. If I can afford $10,000 for cards then I can afford $1000 to secure those cards. Sometimes more depending if that security has regular upkeep...
Agreed, glad you were able to address this Rudy. Covering opportunity costs, storage space, storage costs, securities costs, etc. Is something that your average viewer does not consider. I actually doubt your average Patreon member considers the related costs. When people bring up the single card (RL, graded Alpha) vs sealed product, many people don't consider all the costs to compare apples to apples. For me, my restriction is 1 closet in my office for all my collection (graded, EDH, Legacy, Modern, etc.), as the wife doesn't care about the unregulated, uninsured returns I have gotten from MTG cards that can be stolen or burned in an instant (yes, even a 2 hour fireproof safe has issues). So I collect graded Alpha and graded Reserved List because it takes up far less space than sealed product and is way more fun to show my MTG friends. MTG investments have been good overall for many of us, just different restrictions for different people.
Amazing life advice sir. From one once upon a Tampa Bay, it used to be nothing to live comfortably in FL, but now - cost of living has surprisingly skyrocketed. Pensacola to Jacksonville, North FL has also gone up dramatically. Stay safe and financially sound, strange days lie ahead.
Very good advice. I appreciate the bit about insurance and how difficult it is to basically not have a corporation screw you in the end. Protect your house in case of the end of the world, for specialized things like Magic, do your best to protect it in a security vault, get cameras, keep Mother Nature out, so on. I had the same thought processes when I bought my first house and stored my expensive collection.

I saw Rudy from Alpha Investments at a grocery store in Jacksonville the other day. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
I appreciate the video mate! Honestly you mix the world of Magic (that i love) and the investment finance industry that I'm learning for a career so keep up the good work!
Rudy forgets to mention having traps like knockout gas, poison darts, pressure plates, laser beams, huge boulders and man eating crocodiles surrounding your magic collection too.
Love these videos on how to store cards and BBs. Can you also talk about humidity and other stuff to factor in for short/mid/long term storage? Should we use silica gel packs ? Thanks!
Liberty, Fort Knox, and if you're on a budget Cannon are all good safes. Definitely bolt them down. Don't keep your safe by the window or on the ground floor if it can be helped, because a tow strap and a truck will pull it out. But also remember that a safe can be defeated quickly with a harbor freight angle grinder.
On top of all the sneaky sub limits, exclusions, endorsements, and general lava claw reach arounds in an insurance policy, everyone should also remember that the whole point of insurance is to make the group facing the risk pay more to cover their risks than the risks actually cost if they occur uncovered. So if you and 1,000 people buy magic card policies, they have a formula to figure out the average number of those collections that will get wiped out, and you'll all pay more than that would cost to replace. In other words even with no security and a policy that will actually cover you (haha), there's a decent chance you're still financially better off just rebuying your whole collection if it's destroyed than you'd be having the policy. This is why more and more policy types are trying to get the government to force you to buy their policies, because the policies on their own merits simply aren't worth buying.
Thank you Rudy, whenever you choose to part ways with RUclips just know you inspired a lot of collectors to stay the fucking course ❤️ love from Mickey Mouse Town

You might want to invest in a dog at some point. Even if it is tiny. If they smell their owners fear they will react and they don’t understand guns. If you collection gets big and you don’t need to access it right away invest in time based doors, which open after 24 hours (obviously with a second key). Invest in security that shows up if you don’t call them prior to opening your safe. Rule number 1: never tell anyone how much worth you have stacked. The good thing is you cannot liquidize large or exotic collections easily, so rudys collection is worth at least 10 times more to him than some oceans 17 crew that have to find a buyer for the whole crap.
Most LGS around me IF they have a display case with expensive cards ($75-100+) do NOT even take them out of their safes to put in display during business hours. They stay in their at all times until somebody wants to look at one. The display case just has jewel cases with printed photos of the cards + price and condition. This seems to be the ideal approach: although it means in order to show even 1 card from safe you gotta open it. So EVERY owner of an LGS should be concealed carrying IMO. That way if somebody tries the ol' armed robbery you're packing and don't lose your stuff still.

This seems to be the ideal approach: although it means in order to show even 1 card from safe you gotta open it. So EVERY owner of an LGS should be concealed carrying IMO. That way if somebody tries the ol' armed robbery you're packing and don't lose your stuff still.
