Rudy:"It's just not true, there are not pallets of product stored away"
Reality: Cut to Rudy's basement
This. It's not the distributors that you need to worry about. It's the investors that are hoarding sealed product. They have much less of it than any distributor individually would, but it adds up to a substantial amount. If you look at previous collectibles industry crashes, like comics in the 90s, most of the surplus came from individuals, not from distributors or stores. They all decided to cash out at once, flooded the market, which cratered the price on everything, and that created a giant wave that wiped out everybody.
We see you Rudys ;p
Yep, I bet you there are lots of collectors like Rudy out there. But, not sure what would cause them release their holdings. I feel like if it would be that bad for them, it would have to be much worse for us.
🤣
@@cloudyskiesnow yes distributors don't care, it could be pallets of paint brushes as far as they care....they just want to move the stuff. I mean it's nice to be Rudy and have millions sunk into magic and not really have it matter if a lot of it crashes to nothing or have the need to dump product. Eventually though some of these releases will crash because just too much is being printed and WOTC will only release MORE products each year, not less. It's going the way of sports-cards where what used to be rare and original became totally commonplace. Pretty soon packs will contain all foils and mythics, mark my words....it begins with Double Masters, tho collector's boxes have already started the trend.
The "back room" has become a mythical place where things come from for a lot of people who have never worked in retail.
Meanwhile the retail vets know it's the place to avoid customers and have a quiet smoke.
And retreat to and regroup when a customer is extra special.
@@jonathantillian6528 the true anti-karen tactic. pretend to go get manager, go have a smoke, come back and say he's busy on the phone with the regional manager
The guy who said that is probably looking at his 1000 virus cards he bought for 150 a piece still thinking that they are going to go up in value
🥺
sad part is that that card is uncommon not even rare or epic
The reason they are called Distributors is because the whole business model is to get product in and distribute ASAP so they have the room and money for the next thing. Churn and burn.
Yep. No warehouse wants to tie up space with an "investment" that takes years to mature. It is a nightmare to find space in a warehouse when you're running near capacity, and every warehouse is always almost out of space. Get it in, get it out.
Jen Fraser I’m uk vender looking to transition from vender to distributor due to the fact that my distributors lack supply I require there are currently 2 or 3 main distributors and if I don’t preorder or reserve any new product they run out on the day of availability. Investing sealed product is much a real thing.
you can have my sealed boxes when you pry them from my cold, dead hands
"Your proposal is acceptable."
haha
Sure thing. Got an address?
Got anything pre-collector boxes era?
My sideline "investing" in MTG is: keep 1 or 2 sealed booster boxes of each set + 1 box of each special release. If it all goes belly-up then I'll open the product I have and be happy. Rudy is the 1 in a Million case of MTG investing, don't try to compete on his level, but do listen to what he says.
I started investing heavily into Pioneer back in November just after it was announced as a format. So far in 8 months Im up about 30% overall in sealed Pioneer boxes. Sealed product investing is far from dead.
Moral of the story; Timmy’s Emporium will never compare to Rudy, the Warren Buffet of MTG
I'm blessed with my lgs. They're part of that 1% of stores that gets a pallet each set
Good stuff as usual. If only I would have heard this advice back in '94-'95 during the Ice Age/Homelands mass booster box dump (I quit buying sealed) to market, I would have a sealed collection worth 6figures+. But that is how emotion clouds one's judgement.
I wish I had a Rudy-approved booster pack for every time he said "nobody is watching this far"
This is a joke right? Sealed product investing is the way of the future. If anyone thinks Throne or Ikoria will be $80-$100 in 5-10 years they’re insane.
M8 I give it 2
@@brokengames9020 Ah, yes, just like how old godzilla figures are worthless. Dumbass, I bet you do not even know what is in the product. People have been buying Godzilla merch for decades and holy hell is there money in it.
@@tygonmaster Shhhhhhh. I've been buying position in lots of Monsterart figures and don't want everyone to start doing the same!
Sealed is also the only way to almost ensure gem mints for desirable cards, even if it's a lottery chance. Look at Mirage and Stronghold prices. With the CE era, it'll likely be those boxes that'll appreciate faster since there is no reprint.
@@brokengames9020 Hey, isn't mtg a scam in plain sight? You forgot to paste that.
There is no sealed product that has lost value over time. Even if it takes 25 years for a product like Fallen Empires.
I remember buying Fallen Empires box from $40 at an LGS clearance table, and it's now $250. The Timmy that wrote the letter must be young and uninformed.
@@technole I paid $10 at a store in a mall in 1995. They were $50 two years later.
@@themisprintguy Yep! Fallen Empires was the Magic meme in the day. So much of the product everywhere to grow the game but it started to cleared out fast when Ice Age was coming.
I remember opening a box with my friends, and thinking after that this was crap..I still made a thallid deck with fungusaurs. And those were good times.
And then after the disaster known as Homelands hit, Alliances came around to give us the overpowered nonsense(at the time, I'm an old Timmy) of Force of Will and Balduvian Hordes. Times have changed.
I remember buying a Wyvern starter brick for $20 in the late 90's. Now it's selling for 200+ (but due to potential misprint possibility of a Magice front (and Wyvern back)).
Yep! I knew how LGSes worked when I was 17 and wanted to buy a box of revised starter decks. Simply a matter of them not having enough of the product on-hand and having to buy what was on-display.
About 16:00 on the video, my personal take: I buy a few boxes to keep sealed on the long term. I think that I want to draft them and have fun in the future, when they're too expensive and harder to get, but the truth to it is simple: I eventually give up and move on from magic, and don't actually want to draft those boxes on the future, at least I can sell them for more than I bought them in the future.
I have a friend that does the same thing with loose booster packs. He buys a few (10 or less) and throw them in a box. Once per year he hosts a chaos draft and keeps all the cards. He has sealed product for his own enjoyment.
This
"I should really do that, that sounds really cool" Stops the entire tangent hahaha
That was fantastic!
Lol yep, my husband and I were laughing at that as well.
Fun old story; A game shop in my home town bought 4 cases of original Zendikar when it launched. Within two weeks; they were already reordering for two more cases. They pretty much had only open boxes for the Alara and Lorrwyn set. The only unopened boxes they had were for the core set. It was just straight turn and burn on sets.
People probably think that stores have pallets of product because of the amount of product they see in your videos and they forget that your an invester not just an lgs. Timmy's unite!
Rudy explains again the concept of just in time inventory
Timmy: "YEAH BUT HERE'S WHAT I THINK"
Every single manager and expert on supply chain and inventory management "that's nice dear"
Hi from Spain Rudy. Know what you are going through re:the bug, we are a couple of months ahead on the curve.
Things get back to normal real quick. :)
“I could say hard floppy taco phyrexian tower in Rudy’s bassement” NOBODY WILL NOTICE!!
Rudy has made his life understanding investing. He knows more than us, and we should trust his judgement.
That's what idiots said about Trump, look how that turned out.
We thought the same thing about Bill gates but here we are with a death corona card
Yet a huge number of predictions turn out to be false
He knows this particular business more than most and trust advice in this area.
8:08: don't worry Rudy; you don't look a day over 45
Behind that bookcase at the video store is the good version of Godfather 3 and videos of a man releasing a radioactive ape in his neighbor's house
Magic distributors are a volume business. Buy $20 million a year from wizards, collect $22 million from sales, pay employees, expenses, taxes, and if run properly you are left with $400k/yr for the owners. Speculating incorrectly on just one set could wipe out your profits for a year. You don't need any proof they don't do it, because you KNOW they don't. Smart business people remember what game they are playing, and while you can make money speculating/investing in magic boxes, that is not what a distributor does.
Excellent analysis grounded in reality, which sadly is a rare thing now a days.
This is why I collect only sealed products from Innistrad block or earlier.
People are trying to gaslight the competition for sealed products and hold buy in cost down.
NPC international which is the oldest Pizza Hut franchise operator that owns 1600 Pizza Huts and 600 Wendy's filed bankruptcy. That's pretty scary considering the game stores are much weaker than NPC.
....and this is why we need to support our local game stores!!. Im lucky to have 2 local game stores and i love them both.
its all because people are mad or jealous they missed out on the opportunity to make money . . .
Missed? Every time Wizards releases a new set, it's a new opportunity.
This is what stupid people who get lucky tell themselves to make them feel like they're better than everyone else.
Why are people buying products they can’t use?
For mad gains
Its one thing looking at a website thinking you have all this value, its another thing selling and shipping successfully with no issues.
Rudy this is so true. My lcs only keeps just enough product to sale and when they run out. Depending how long it took they might not even order more because they think it's just not worth it. I just want it to succeed so I have a play to play tcg with others and league play. Looks like I am going to have to register my basement to overcome if the lcs fails.
Rudy is right.. my LGS has been around since the late 90’s, it’s a very successful store and they never have more than 1 or 2 booster boxes of each standard set on hand. When a set rotates they will rarely have not sold through whatever they had brought in. I’m pretty sure they don’t hoard cases of every set in some secret underground bunker.
Here in Moscow the Magic scene has already started up again with no problem...

Loved the video, thanks for all the insights
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Rudy say in a past video that distributors DO in fact "invest" in some sealed product by way of saving some pallets aside (whether intentional or because stores didn't buy as much so they have them left over) then increase the price later when product is older?
My wife works for a distributor and the goal is to not have anything in the warehouse for any longer than it takes to repackage it onto smaller orders and get it out. Product that sits is lost revenue, you can not run a distributor as an investment speculator.
Hard floppy taco in a phyrexian basement.
what?
Dank Audio Stash I don't have that kind of an attention span. 16 mins?!?
You the man Rudy !!! Fellow investor in Lakeland, FL.
both my wife and me make sure to watch your videos all the way. :D thanks for what you do
Rudy, if you make that hidden room with the adult bookshelf, I *demand* an (online) tour! I understand it won't exactly be a secret, but dammit I wanna see it!
4:00 my lgs which has like 3 different locations, hardly has any sealed product inventory aside from maybe a box or two, unless its sold out. They really only keep an inventory of 20 boxes of the newest (or several most recent) sets. The store inventory mainly consists of singles.
I want to be in the Rudy warehouse and work in the adult inappopriate movie bait section...where do i send my CV?
I have known and kept up with magic on and off since 1994. Sadly I've only bought 3 packs of magic in my life time. Regardless, I've watched Rudy's videos for a few years now and he has made this statement a few times per year. I honestly think it's the collectors that tell the newbies to give up so there is less competition for them. Stay the course, and believe in Rudy. History is in his favor.
Believe in Rudy!
All I know is the hidden bunkers full of sealed old magic that Rudy personally owns makes the long term prospects of magic investing very unpredictable.
What he really wanted to say is show me a shortcut on how to gain wealth...
I’ve been studying and taking notes from your channel; I’ve started doing the same thing but in a different hobby. It’s possible for something to create profit and also be fun. Btw you look healthy; that’s a good sign. I don’t listen to anyone that can’t take care of themselves.
"Hard floppy taco, Phyrexian Tower and Rudy's basement."
I was talking to my distributors and they said the next few sets from jumpstart and up will be super underprinted (at least for the release of sets) and won't get back to normal till late next year. All card games are having this problem because they all use the same printing presses.
Those stores will be okay. They all have back rooms with millions in sealed product.
I'm only here for the "Hard floppy taco phyrexian tower Rudy's basement" quotes while I eat my Taco Bell and waffle fries.
That's a lie, there's no Taco Bell nearby and I consider moving every day because of it.
So WOTC has secret warehouses FULL of Alpha Boxes! Thanks for letting me know
First rule of running a business, don't compete against Amazon.
Rudy. You are the platform.

F it, stop buying people!!!! Magic is dead!!!
I wanna see them prices drop baby!
Yeah!!!

Covid19 is destroying almost every way of life, not just paper Magic etc.
All the LGS where I live are closing for good because of covid19. I don't want to live in Covid-world. I'm very depressed. MTG was a social thing for me, and now that's gone.
I truly hope to see the day, where I can walk into an LGS again, and sit down with friends to play EDH. Stay safe all. Keep the hope alive. Long live MTG.
JUICE at the END of the video! Floppy Taco phyrexian tower me up! Nice Video!
Moral of the story: STAY THE COURSE
Been playing off and on since Khans Rudy, the collector's boxes actually brought me back to the game recently. I buy the regular boxes for draft, but it is nice to know that I can buy a collector's box (no good for drafting at all) and I get a bunch of the sets best cards.
Behind Rudy's bookshelves is a secret room with over $1 million in Alpha and Beta Magic cards and a couple of tied up women gagged with tacos.
The reboot of DuckTales will be cartoon Rudy, Scrooge McDucking into a pool of 93-95 Magic Cards.
Hard floppy taco, Phyrexian tower in Rudy's basement!
"Hard floppy taco phyrexian tower in rudys basement" i bet Rudy won't notice 😥

I got a 2021 core teferi deck with all commons and uncommons miscut. Any advice on what to do with it?
Hind sight is crazy and can drive people insane. Buy a box or two and sit on it for 10 years...no regrets. Dont buy a box or two and sit on and see the regret. Then jealousy kicks in against the few who did buy box
4:15 exactly RUDY! all my local shops have a couple boxes of all the modern sets and that’s it.
I was on my way to do something usefull today, but hey Rudy uploaded a video minute ago
Off to find Francis Drake's secret stash of Alpha Lotuses.
My local store was selling rivals of ixala for 99!
I actually loved amonkhet and hour and want another box of each but now they are selling for more than i want to pay haha.
Sealed Product is good on various levels. I turned a stack of sealed product into two pieces of power last week (Product including Innistrad, Conflux, Fifth Dawn, Morningtide, Kaladesh, Mystery, Ikoria Collectors, etc...). Could I have held onto the sealed and made money eventually? Maybe. My choice the last two years has been to play standard, sell out early enough to still get value out of rotating cards, turn those into sealed product or first year or reserve list cards, then turn those cards into power 9. I have picked up 4 pieces in the last two years by doing that.
hello, i want to have fun and crack a booster box, which do i have the best chance of return Ultimate Masters , Eternal Masters , or Ikoria Collectors? Those are the ones I'm thinking about. What you think?
Rudy exactly knows that we all watch till the end.
We think card stores have millions in sealed product in the back room because we see what's in the background in your videos.
yes sealed product investing is dead, just go ahead and sell it all to me for 30 cents on the dollar while someone is still paying anything at all for it
Rudys right ... stores that are closing are minor ones that just make enough to get it through. My LGS literally does as he says: they have mostly boxes of a new set. They run tournaments but they didnt order mystery boxes at all (i expect due to many not sold producted they had from earlier). So i agree with rudy.
#1 you hurt my wallet every time I listen to you speak
#2 I can't stop listening to you speak business, so yes still here at 16 minutes
#3 keep doing you Rudy, the haters can eat floppy 🌮
And yet my old local game store that closed down last year is open for business again! Pretty sure they never had a secret back room full of Alpha cards, but they did flip singles like mad🤔
Things are heating up in the bankruptcy fandom
There are some sealed collectible cards and toys that have never appreciated in value. Early 90's sports cards are a great example. Newer sets though are fire.
The day this man decides he is to old for this shit and sales all stuff he has, is the day the magic economy crashes. Respect.
That guy in the note doesn’t know just to keep buying if you wanna make money. Especially in a recession. I’d gladly buy everything cheap for it to only go up in the next couple years. “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”
Shoot! Just looked at the Egyptian style sets, they were at like 65 a box for months; now I can’t find them for under 100! Well, there you go! Core 19 I am seeing for 82ish! Well it goes to show that magic is a fluctuating economy!
Like Rudy says, diversify your purchases. Not too difficult with all the new products available. Buy a couple of each, sit on them for a couple of years, and sell. Repeat. If you don't at the very very least break even, take a hint and get out of investing.
Stay safe Rudy!
thank you
Yeah ... honestly, anyone who understands a business models of capital gains cannot fathom the intricacies of P&L. These people and companies do not give a shit about hoarding. Most of them that are so high in their ivory towers are so disconnected about the process of "investing" and just have others run it. We call them four to five vacations a year with over six figures, and they want someone to make "results." I think that point on private portfolio business models is true, and it would be absurdly low. The energy sector and transportation are giants, and literally dwarfs "collectibles," for people with money would not bend over a dollar to pick up a dime...
Amen Rudy!
Hard Floppy Taco Phyrexian Tower in Rudy's Basement.
Timmy's make their decisions base on short term views and in the moment emotions. As time passes, all seal products will increase in vaule, as everything in all markets are base on supply and demand. Supply goes down, demand stays consistent or goes up, prices raise, simple concept that most Timmy's fail to understand.
At least sealed product will hold more value long term than my fireworks money this year....
The worst about the reasoning Rudy is depicting is that IF someone was sitting on a ridiculous amount of boxes driving the value up, they couldn't possibly unload all their position all at once. This would drive the prices down so fast they would have wasted all these years of inflation. Magic is one of the closest form of offer and demand, even if you sit on a large stuck, you need to play your cards right (see what I did there). Most successful investor do not panick, that is why they are sucessful. They will unload their position overtime cause it's the smartest thing to do to avoid driving the price down.
Silk Road! Backpage! Craigslist! Have you been spying on me Rudy?!?!
i got taunted by those swwet Pokemon boxes in the backround in the first 10 seconds of the video. Well played. That´s a big boy flex.
Yoooo those sealed pokemon booster boxes behind ya, Rudy 👌
Rudy's secret room with dirty video has two other rooms, gun room and hand made knife sets. I guarantee it.
