    That seems like a fire hazard.

    I "liked" this video but I just can't believe that in this day and age they can't manufacture a silent aquarium air pump - just seems unbelievable that the technology doesn't exist and the only choices are either try to sleep with a loud buzzing sound all night or just not keep fish at all

    Staff inside filter fiber is good for noise great and simple recommendation.
    Be careful this is bad for heat release and adds material that can catch fire very near the electrical contacts.
    Better to use a foam material fire proof or at least auto extinguish

      Very true! The bonded filter pad material I use seems to be up to the task as far as heat resistance, but it is a great reminder for others to be aware of what they choose to use! Thanks for watching!

    There is a reason manufacturers don't do this, it's fire hazardous and would not pass safety tests.

    I’m gonna try this with ROXUL batt insulation.
    The stuff is fire resistant. It’s also used for sound proofing, mold resistant and repels water.

    Worked great. I found that by having just a little polyfill come in contact with the moving arm of the diaphragm I was able to cut the noise level in half with no noticeable effect on pumping ability. Everyone freaking out about fire hazards or overheating should realize that these are literally air cooled by drawing the air being pumped over the motor. These motors produce little heat to begin with. The results are amazing and completely justify the means in this case. If you are still worried about a fire hazard, just use fiberglass insulation instead of polyfill.

    A small spark from the short circuit can cause a big disaster in the house if i'm not wrong. It might be good option if you can find some material which is not sensitive to fire. That's just my idea.

      Yong Ye think about the pump that’s inside your aquarium, the Moter in that’s really, really well insulated. Even something fairly flammable, when it’s packed tight inside something with little oxygen circulating around it, is unlikely to burst into flames, in the unlikely even it got too hot it would likely just die. There’s no reason to expect a pump or anything else to short circuit, not much point fixing it if that’s the case

    Does this affect cooling? Although I don't know if an air pump generates enough heat for this to affect its performance.

      Got to figure if it was engineered to have open space, that space holds a purpose.

    Oddest looking airpump I've ever seen

  • @wyattspop
    @wyattspop 6 лет назад +2

    I have a question please, let me begin by saying I used to be a service guy, but A) It was years ago and B) I've never done this. I have a 40 gallon saltwater "system" tank (water pump, drip tray, bio balls all built into the back). It's been dry for years in my office, I did not disassemble or break it down then. I want to get it running again, I'm sure the pump and any tubing is trash, the wall of internal salt creep is huge, the sand (substrate) is surely dirty, one positive is the compact flourescents still light, the ballasts function so no expense there unless the bulbs have no decent spectrum left. So, what do i need to buy besides a new main pump,(powerhead) filter materials, salt, heater and Fluval? Do I need to start over with fresh sand? Can I keep the dead Fuji rock in it as it would eventually seed and become live rock or is all the salt residue going to require I strip it bare? Thanks so much.

    • @TheFishGuy
      @TheFishGuy  6 лет назад +1

      Everything should be gutted and cleaned. ditch the sand, powerwash the rock. The pumps may be able to be salvaged, just have to disassemble and see how the magnets look. after everything gets a good cleaning get it all back together with some fresh sand and start cycling, should be good to go.

    Nice simple idea. I like it. My only concern - and may not be an issue - would be the motor overheating, might be good to find a fire retardant fibre to use :-)

    • @TheFishGuy
      @TheFishGuy  7 лет назад +1

      Gary Kreeger definitely a valid concern. I've done quite a few of these over the years and haven't found it to be an issue though. That isn't to say that their isn't a pump that's motor runs hotter, just haven't come across one myself. Thanks for watching!

    Most air pumps have a hanger just go buy a 3M swivel hanger command hook. Works perfectly and keeps the air pump doing what it’s meant to do.

  • @mylesromanow3927

    I did this to all my pumps before I seen your video. I used 1" filter floss pad and just cut to shape to fit top cover..... cuts the noise way down.... Especially in my Azoo 8500 which I have had for about 15 years. Great output but noisy... not anymore...

      Myles Romanow Yeah, not an original idea by any means, but I wanted to share for those that weren't familiar. Glad to hear you've had similar success! Thanks for watching!

    Would you recommend this for large pumps? I have a 60 litre per min pump for my fish room that's below someone's bedroom.

    • @TheFishGuy
      @TheFishGuy  6 лет назад +2

      Without knowing the exact style of pump its hard to say for sure. Sometime for the larger models it's a better choice to make a sound deadening enclosure for it.

    • @MrCelt81
      @MrCelt81 6 лет назад +1

      The Fish Guy Thanks for the reply. It's a electromagmetic linear diaphragm. The model is a resun lp-40

    I know this is a old video.. but I just did this with my tetra 30-60 air pump.. I cut apart a old cartridge filter and use the filter and put it in the top of my air pump and under the diaphragms making sure not to touch the power block. it helped reduce the noise level..
