I love this OST, it feels so melancholic, it fits the mood perfectly when Barret confronts Dyne

Way better than Rebirth's depiction. It conveys the desolation and hopelessness of the desert prison far better than the mini-game infested mess of Rebirth.

So I love this one so much and a bit disappointed by the Rebirth one because it’s so much lighter in mood and doesn’t even respect the little trilled notes in the original. This one gives such a desolate feeling that wouldn’t really work for what they were going for . But here’s what I’m hoping - after Meteor is summoned and the world is a much more dire depressing place we will hopefully have sadder more foreboding versions of the town themes. Let’s see if I’m right about their plan . I can see a situation where Corel Prison is no longer vibrant - crime starts to be a thing that really doesn’t pay as everyone starts hunkering down for the end of the world - and we get a much darker version closer to the OG in part 3

Crime in a prison? What a concept... If Rebirth couldn't get it right the first time around I don't expect them to the next time.

I’m not holding my breath. Remake and Rebirth feel almost scared of dwelling on the darker, more “depressing” aspects of the original game - they add in comic relief and more lighthearted elements almost constantly, like the player is going to turn the game off if they see anything that makes them feel slightly unsettled or sad. (Extra ridiculous, because the story’s cautionary themes of a dying, dystopian world and a broken protagonist should REQUIRE it to feel desolate and oppressive much of the time.) They even change the plot to file down the harder edges of the original story (Avalanche and Zack being morally ambiguous, NPCs you know dying in the plate drop, more obvious references to drug addiction, abuse and prostitution, Sephiroth being mysterious, cold and ruthless instead of popping in every hour or so to LOL at Cloud and twirl his nonexistent mustache). Square is clearly targeting a different audience with the remakes than they were with the original. They don’t make “sad, depressing” games like Final Fantasy VI, VII or Tactics anymore.

@@gatotsu2501 I agree 100%. OG just has a better and darker vibe about it. Remake and Rebirth is too sensational and the tonal whiplash is too much, and like you mentioned, the suspense, build up and mystery of Sephiroth is totally gone.

Original: “This is a desolate corner of a cruel and desperate world.”
Rebirth: “This is where a WACKY CRIME BOSS with his VERY OWN THEME SONG hangs out!!!”

@@chumpian The Rebirth version is alright. It's definitely a different take/style on the song, and is good music by itself. The original is a much, much better take on the song that gives off the hopeless, dryness feeling of the desert and being stuck in it. I would have loved to have gotten a more faithful adaptation of this track in Rebirth, but Rebirth is a bad adaptation of FF7 in general so I do not expect the music to be faithful, I only expect it to be good by itself (and not 1:1 compared to the original).

That is because the main point of rebirth's desert wasteland was to show you more than just a depressive place you "so have to get out of"

Corel prison is way more upbeat and I think Rebirth's one fits the area more

Corel Prison is only more upbeat in Rebirth because of the goofy thugs. In the original it was way more desolate/depressing.
