Great quote. Except when it's interpreted to mean stay quiet. Lies were the basis for Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao's China, Pol pot's Cambodia, Kim jong-un's North Korea... The list is endless it seems. So it begs the question, when will we learn? It is naive and dangerous to not adopt the responsibility of truth, owing it to ourselves, our children and each other.
It may sound like rhetoric and hyperbole to some but to others it is a harsh reality. I believe that's Peterson's point. Truth at all levels all the time. From keeping our individual lives manageable to maintaining the fabric of society. From the smallest of Little White lies up to the ashes coming down like snow in July. We lie to ourselves at our own peril.

Getting someone to see that they're even telling a lie is the challenge.
It’s actually quite easy. At some point they’ll say something that doesn’t even remotely match up to how they’re living or their actions and you just point out the contradiction , now getting them to accept and believe they’re telling a lie … well we leave that up to whatever is higher.
People that dont BS themselves have a BS detector.
Also when their actions dont align with their words is another great indicator.

People ruin relationships and create so much stress by lying. Being honest with yourself and others sets you free.
I was possessed just as JP described here. It was my manipulating mother. It took a long time for me to recognize that she is the manipulator controlling me and that I needed to cut those strings from her. She still keeps trying to "tie the strings back" using guilt and shame and gaslighting tactics. Those tactics only work, when you don't know that you are getting played. once you know their game, it gets alot easier to protect yourself from manipulation, even from a family member.
I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Nobody deserves being manipulated and controlled by someone who should’ve just loved you unconditionally.
I am happy for you that you broke free though. I believe that happy and healthy people don’t treat others that way. Maybe your mother also was treated in ways that kept her from being open and sincere. It takes courage to just tell your truth and let whatever happens happen. Some people want to make sure they will be loved or avoid being blamed so the don’t have to experience pain. They twist their words to remain in control because it feels safe to them.
Stay strong and stand your ground. Maybe one day, your mother can learn from you the courage to be honest.

Yes but. If you and I went to an Asian country and saw their many gods and they asked you the name of your god how would you truthfully answer? “God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit “? They would say so you have three Gods? You would answer “well it’s a mystery as the three Gods are actually One”. An educated Asian would reply “Yes the Babylonians worshipped such a God.
When they ask me whom I worship I answer God the Father. But only can I do that through our Savior Christ Jesus.”
And you would say “yes that’s what I meant”!
The Asian would then ask the name of the one you pray to?
And you would say Jesus.
And I would say “Jehovah the Father of Jesus”.
The Asian man would be confused.....whom of the two of you tells the Truth?
So you see one must first understand that the Creator Jehovah’s first born of creation was the Logos or the word. When He was sent to this earth to be born as Jesus he eventually had to die as a perfect man to pay the ransom for humankind. Jesus was thus dead. Unable to raise himself. But as in His baptism his Father called him “this is my son” and holy spirit came down upon him. He did not speak to himself and then send himself to himself...that is your mystery and not truth. Until we worship God in spirit and truth we cannot help others to.

The origin of the trinity can be traced back to ancient Babylon where many trinitarian gods were worshipped. The bible teaches that God is ONE. Read Isaiah 42:8; 45:18; Psalm 83:18 where it shows God is one supreme Being. Not three. The problem is that bible translators have removed the Divine Name from most bible translations thereby hiding the identity of the True God. Read Psalm 113:1-3 and you will see how vital it is to know and give praise to God´s name, JEHOVAH.

The relief in communicating the truth and being transparent is amazing. People often lie to themselves and others out of shame and impulse. Many get upset with the truth, but there is also freedom in letting go of the outcome and what people think.

Thanks to Peterson, I always try my best not to lie and in fact he's made me a lot more comfortable in telling the truth, no matter how unpleasant it might be. I've realised there's no one you lie to more than yourself and that was the very first thing I had to work on and being honest with myself has put me in a much better position to change certain aspects of my life.
If a situation occurs where I feel like I have no choice but to lie to someone, then I reflect on the choices I made that got me in that situation and try to avoid it in future.
Peterson has been nothing but a good influence on my life and growing up without a father, he's certainly been like the father I've never had, showing me how to better navigate myself through life.
I need to start listening to him again.

You know we gotta remember Jesus was not rich. He didn't even have a home when he born. We can tolerate the bad behaviour up to a certain point but If you really got tired and want a change, pray to let it be God's will and not yours, follow Him & trust Him. He'll make a way in His time.
Dr Peterson put into words the way I've felt for a very long time. I've lied in my past and felt like it was someone else that the words were coming out of.

The simplicity of “tell the truth or at least don’t lie” has changed my life and changed how I operate in this world. We all it’s wrong to lie but putting it this was profound for me. I literally think about this every day. I’m so incredibly grateful for Dr Peterson.
It’s amazing listening to the way he articulates things at a level the rest of us can understand and apply. I’ve always loved by the rule of tell the truth no matter what. Sometimes that’s hard. Sometimes that gets me in trouble, but at the end of the day I have no lies to try to remember and I can look in the mirror and like what I see. I can’t stand liars and manipulators. I used to work for a company that knew some of us in the engineering department were friends with people in sales and other departments and our bosses would tell us to “leverage” them or something like that basically a code word to manipulate them based on our friendship to try to get stuff from them. Such a toxic environment. When I specifically asked about the morality of them asking us to manipulate and use our friends good will for our gain they really didn’t like that and tried to differentiate between the two claiming we weren’t manipulating them we’re “leveraging” them whatever the hell that means. Sounds an awful lot like manipulation to me.
People in business always say that. No one would have to leverage if they provided quality goods and services. They'll just have to present the fact and the people looking for it will buy it. It's not the easy way out but it's the rightful way out.

It all starts with love for others. When you love others you are no longer afraid. When you are no longer afraid, you can tell the truth with confidence. Even when the reason for telling a lie os not fear but something else, it still goes back to the love for your fellow human being. As Jesus said about what are the 2 greatest commandments & what is the new commandment. Love God, Love Others, love is the basis.

@@toplobster1040 This is why when you look at the ten commandments from a legal perspective, they seem impossible to not break due to the fact that the thing we call today "human nature" when we mess up is the very thing the Bible calls original sin & its what prevents us from full filling God's law.
However, when we look at the same 10 commandments with God's Love (Agape Love) applied, they make more sense. Such as "Thou shalt steal". If you love your neighbor, you wouldn't steal...do the same to each commandment & you'll see. Jesus was correct in saying "without me you can do nothing" because Jesus is God & God is love & without love can't get nowhere. 👍

I lied for most of my life. I later realised it was because I was afraid, it was that simple, but I just couldn't see it. Going through the 12 step programme in AA helped and a good genuine friend who was not afraid to tell me what I needed to hear after I asked him for his advice. Being RIGOROUSLY honest with oneself is incredibly hard. Most people lie each day, they say they are OK when they're not. Clean house. Trust God. Help others. God bless all who read this and the truth will set you free 🆓👍♥️🙏✝️♥️🇬🇧

There are times when silence is best. Will speaking the truth bring you peace or joy or comfort or contentment if you lose those relationships completely? Consider this carefully before speaking. Weigh the situation and issue first. I thought it was and lost my closest relationship just months before she died and it still hurts my soul.

I adopted a three fold test for speaking, especially when it’s personally directed.
Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?
Often, something isn’t said because neither the second nor third are true.
