Fr. Ted and I talked for two hours during my Sophomore year. He was gracious enough to give me an interview when I was a reporter for SCHOLASTIC Magazine. He always remembered my name after that, and helped me get hired at the Notre Dame Fire Department my Senior year. Years later in Chicago at an alumni gathering, we got a picture together. He was instrumental in my Notre Dame experience, and I am so grateful for his pastoral care for me.
We talked about Land O'Lakes because I am from Wisconsin. I attended some of his personal masses in the Crypt of the Basilica. We talked, once, by the Grotto, my Junior year, and I changed my major to Theology.
I'll always remember his statement "The best thing a father can do for his children is love their mother". . . That's old school Catholicism, but it's good stuff because he had a pure heart. He knew the Holy Spirit. He knew Jesus.

What a tremendous speaker Father Malloy is. He was Notre Dame's 16th President from 1987 to 2005.

Eloquent..Monk Malloy 's NY Times piece about how embarrassed HE WAS OF nd''s INSTITUTIONAL RACISM as evidenced by the firing of the only minority head coach in any sport in ND history (Wilingham) was fired before his contract was up! Shameful- like scandal ridden ND's long history of institutional sexism. Leaders say what NEEDS to be said. Monk did that finally! He and DOCTOR Kevin White and Wadsworth, Charles Weis, and UM Co- founder Fr. Gabriel Richard's employee Sorin will all go down in ND history . Yes TED is now very dead like Franco, Abe Vagoda , Newt , but he lives on in the warehouse chuck full of Honorary Degrees he found a need to collect like baseball cards! RIP padre Ted you & ND may always live in World Famous Michigan's giant Midwest shadow in every salient way that matters but at least you finally slithered your way into partial Big Ten membership..... in Hockey only. There is a rumor that when Fr. Ted died his last words were " Yost lives!" indeed.
