A common comedic trope in western media is that jokes are not treated as jokes in-universe. To give this spongebob example, all characters took the interaction sincerely and moved on without lingering or making the fact that it was comedic clear. The multiple layers of absurdity make it funny. Contrast this with Japanese media where everyone reacts to unexpected statements in over the top manners and explains exactly how and why the statement is extreme. The joke is the aftermath and not necessarily the incident.
In the west we do have a similar concept to the Japanese style. The straight man and funny man duo. Think Abbot and Costello, or more relevantly, SpongeBob and Squidward. The comedy in those interactions come from the straight man’s reaction to the funny man’s antics

I love the jokes in that episode where the hospital wouldn't keep Mr. Krabs because he didn't have insurance. Like they didn't even discharge him, they gradually took Mr. Krabs out and let him wheel down the hill on a gurney.
For a bit of lore, Patrick can't count past 10. There is an episode where he is about to buy a book about counting(literally just a big number at every page), where he's excited to see what number that comes at the next page, but outraged when he learned that there are numbers after 10.
