Everyone loves Space Marines, but codex chapters can be a little bit limiting. In this episode of Paint Perspective, we discuss how you can create your own custom chapter of Space Marines, that are fast and easy to paint, look fantastic, and suit your own personal style.
James shows us his 'Exemplars of Siege' which is his own home-brew chapter, and shares the exact methods he used to create them, so you can too!
Also in this episode, we respond to our listeners comments about the confusing names from Vallejo, answer our question of the week about finding motivation to finish projects, and of course share our parting hobby hack!

For a laugh i just took a look at the hardware store for the names of house paints. Naming 50 types of off-white is am achievement by Dulux. When will we mini-painters get 'flaked almond' or 'dreamy truffle'

I used to work at a dulux paint during my undergraduate days.
The funniest colour name without a doubt was “Colonial White”.
It has hence been officially renamed

Can confirm that my comment on the previous video about getting an army painted was 100% friendly fun. As painting professionals you're also a little trapped because you can't paint armies to a "that'll do standard" that us hobbiests can get away with. Because people will judge your professional offering by your hobby product.

Just listening to you chaps talking about painting is an inspiration in itself. Many of us hobbyists are pretty lonesome dudes while we're painting - I've just spent hours putting together 15 assault intercessors and a shield captain from the Necron box. It's just lovely to spend some time with blokes who are enjoying the hobby.

My process for creating my own chapter last year:
    1. Pick a color scheme
    2. Think about how to wedge them into the lore. Don’t forget to add some mystery
    3. Come up with the name
    4. Make a symbol that evokes the name
    5. Figure out the company and squad colors, which was mostly just to more easily recognize them from several feet away during games (i.e. red company color for infernus marines).

Homebrew is the way! If you are someone who's equally spread between Painting, Playing and Lore, creating your own Chapter covers all the bases. With Skavenblight Dinge of course.

I got some chaos knights to get back into the game a few weeks ago. The plan was to speed paint them for an event so I could play.
Then I discovered these madlads and I’ve been enjoying pushing myself on the painting side of things. I never made the event, and I didn’t mind because I was enjoying the hobby.
    Cheers guys, really inspiring.

Funnily I have been thinking about the same topic for the last couple of days before watching this. My trigger was flipping through the old Eavy Metal How to Paint Space Marines book which has a brilliant chapter about how to create your own chapter. This whole episode has been food for thought. Also James did a brilliant job on the colour scheme for your own Siege chapter!

This is so well timed. I just painted my first model since 4th ed. Started a custom Chapter (don't have a name) but started with Colour scheme. Gone for Vallejo Blue Green 70.808 (don't confuse it with blue green) as the primary colour. With a Copper Helmet and left Arm. Veterans have a Black Helmet. Similar to the Alantian Spears.

    I love rules ❤
6:24 They hold zero weight now. All Space Marines use the same rules, except for special characters from named chapters. So if you want to take Calgar, you need to be Ultramarines. (Also the divergent chapters have extra rules, but can still use all the normal ones. Thats BT, SW, DA, and BA)
10:36 You could use them with the rules for Intercession Squad no problem. Just not the combi-weapons.

Re: the curse of needing to paint too hard for an army - I've been working on a giant necron commission, the bulk of which is three/four colors, no highlights, no shading and seeing the spectacle of all of them on a table really is a sight that makes you ignore the basic level of most of the models.
I've also found that putting something slightly fancy on an easily visible surface can draw attention away from areas that aren't as well developed. On my Eldar jetbikes I tend to do a little freehand pattern on the front hull and putting a bit more effort into that will distract from the parts of the model that are just base/shade/drybrush.

I’ve started a custom chapter myself. It originally started out as a mortifactor projects, but evolved into a Tibetan themed successor chapter. I’ve pulled themes from whites scars, space wolves and dark angels for various aspects from chapter structure to marking guides.
I love seeing all these amazing OC chapters being created and it’s one of my favourite aspects of the hobby.

When I am starting an army, and brainstorming the paint job my considerations are:
Is the intended paint scheme doable with the time, tools and skill set that I have?
Efficiency. After a few demo models, and even the first couple units, I am looking to cut unnecessary paint steps.
The paint itself. Was that blue or green or whatever too temperamental to get the result I want? Find an alternative.

Not sure if anyone will be even a little interested but there are actually 2 Blue wizards in Tolkien’s Middle Earth lore and the little information that is given about them and the area of the world that they reside in is weirdly enough one of the only bits of the world that people could easily think up their own head-canon/design their own look for the culture and people there as there is so little information about it

Lads, if you have a chance could you talk about shading? Especially extremely dark or black shading? I feel like a lot of top-level painting, and the GW house style, has near-black between almost every part. It's not something I would naturally do, but maybe I'm not going dark enough? Maybe it's something that's a feature of very neat and clean competition and box art painting. Cheers!

Awesome podcast lads, always a great listen.
Question for everyone really.. Is there a trick to colour theory or is it just experience? Personally am always impressed by seeing people using washes, glazes or layering with different colours to some amazing results, as if it’s some form of witchcraft. What is a good way to start finding complimentary colours and also understanding how they interact with each other when mixed?

I appreciate you, but I wanted to share some feedback about this episode. It felt different from the spontaneous 'Essex Boys Paint' vibe that I've grown to love. This felt more like it was retrofitted around marketing requirements for a spray paint rather than focusing on the fun and creative content we're used to. Just wanted to share my thoughts, not hating at all-looking forward to more of the episodes.

One thing I would like to know (because its harder than you think to find out as people tend to focus on the creative side) but how do the rules work? Do you pick an established chapter and take their rules wholesale or can you pick and chose bits and dedicated figures? If someone could help that would be great

    • @AncientWyrm1775
      @AncientWyrm1775 2 месяца назад

Chapters don't have rules anymore (mostly). Basically, all Space Marines use the same units and rules, and you can just pick the ones you like and think will fit your army the most.
The only exceptions are Black Templars, Dark Angles, Blood Angles, and Space Wolves, who each have several unique units that only they can take, as well as unique rules. They can still take all the regular options as well, so they just have more options.

My suggestion to anyone that gets 90% done and then gets stuck with all the BS trinkets and whatnot.
Just pick one or two contrast paints. Paint them all in those and move on. Don’t bother highlighting, shading, nothing.
I often finish the armour, the skin, the metallics, and am left with all the BS which I just can’t be bothered with.
Just paint it in a darker muted colour with contrast and move on.
