@Bruce wayne The Bengali famine was created by the cyclone that hit the region. Not Churchill. While he did say they Indians “bred like rabbits” and therefore couldn’t be helped when it came to food shortages, he still appointed Viceroy Field Marshal Wavell to work on the situation. Wavell had part of the army move supplies to the region. As most historians say, “it was not Churchill’s first thought that he often acted upon. It was his second or third.

“Some people's idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage” - Winston Churchill
Fun facts, Churchill memorised all his speeches, the times he had notes, he rarely used them. He often spoke after a decent amount of alcohol had been ingested during the day He was notably known for his sarcasm and humour Even past 70 years, he gave some speeches past 30 minutes long.

First of all hitler is a way above everyone in the list Second of all it is mostly mentioned english speakers while there are many other talented orators in other languages like for example : Fidel castro of Cuba, boumedien of algeria, de gaule of france... Etc
Donny Sobchak You say, yet Winston Churchill, a British PM was Number 1, and so was Margaret Thatcher, who is also British, oh and let's not forget Nelson Mandela, South African, and Adolf Hitler, German. Plus several Non-Americans in honorable mentions. So you can suck it.
Ghandi and Nelson Mandela and Hitler are about the farthest thing from American. As to why English is so dominant, it's because they are really pulling from recorded speakers and between England and the US they have without question culturally dominated the globe in the last 150 years
I liked watchmojo but they lose their credibility with this list for me. Let truth be told: 1- Hitler 2- Mussolini & I don't even understand German or Italian.
in a world with people like reagan, churchill, mandela, cicero, etc. Mussolini would, although he was a gifted orator, not even pop up near the top 30, let alone the top 10
Robert M. Dunn If you think that Jesus is fiction, i'm sorry for you bro. Jesus of Nazareth existed. I'm not saying he is the Christ, but the historical Jesus existed
Robert M. Dunn There is, you're just blind or stupid to search for it. There are many Archeological evidences and historical documents proving his existence. Actually, there are more proves about Jesus than Socrates, but i think you know that Socrates existed right, you don't need to believe, because there are historical proves. The same goes for Jesus
I am not religious. But it is almost certain Jesus did exist. He just happened to be so inspirational that people believed in him to be a deity and his people produced all of the qualities we know of him today.
1) Adolf Hitler 2)Malcolm X 3) Martin Luther king Jr 4)Barack Obama 5)Ghandi 6) Nelson Mandela 7) John F Kennedy 8) Winston Churchill 9) Ronald Reagan 10) Margaret Thatcher
Jesus of Nazareth? Gaius Julius Caesar? Caesar Augustus? Alcibiades? Girolamo Savonarola? And frankly, if you're looking for people actually caught on tape/film, Malcolm X is one of the most electrifying orators you will ever hear
@Rob Roy There is scientific proof, that Jesus did exist. Sure we can't tell, that he is the person described in the bible, but a person at the time and place with the name did exist.
Doc _11 well Jesus did exist to two other religions he was a prophet and teacher and even the Romans had documents about a Jew called Jesus of Nazareth. Even if you don’t believe in God you can’t doubt historically he didn’t exist
Naziism would have been a minor movement without Hitler's power at the microphone, so he should have been #1. And if people object to putting such a criminal at #1, I would point to the important lesson that this teaches: distrust great oratory. And on this subject, Leon Trotsky was a legendary speechmaker, which played an important role in the founding and success of the Red Army during the Civil War (1918-1920). He should have been high on this list.
He is one of the cause of cannibalism in europe, when a peasant asl help from trotsky he says "You are starving? This is not famine yet, when your woman starting eating their children then you may come and say we are starving" . A words of him, disgusting and not even legendary to say.
Both Sir Winston and Herr Hitler deserve the top spot. They both had a flair for using classical rhetorical devices. Two of history's greatest orators - one employed words to spread terror and tyranny; the other to liberate mankind from the clutches of tyranny.
A poorly researched vedio MAHATMA GANDHI was involved in the freedom struggle of two countries and was an inspiration to both Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.
yes, but it wasn't his speeches that were inspirational as much as it was his actions. but honestly can we really say he deserves all the praise he received? independence wasn't achieved because of him, despite what many people seem to believe.
Iby ghee exactly. In fact, if not for WW2, Gandhi's methods would have done nothing except get thousands of Indians killed. Hell it's because of his lack of strength that Nehru, and by extension the INC, became such softies unable to make the hard decisions. This weakness has cost India so much in the long run in the form of Kashmir, the separation of India into India and Pakistan, India's loss to China in 1962, etc. I am honestly disgusted by the amount of misinformation spread in India.
Mahatma Gandhi was not the best orator, his speeches were quite ordinary, he was more a man of action than words. The real orator during the Indian National Struggle was Jawaharlal Nehru. Speeches like the trust with destiny shook the world and inspired Indians all over the country. It’s no surprise that he was our prime minister for three terms. He was just so charismatic.
tungtjockis we're just good speakers we give memorable one liners, "the only thing you have to fear is fear itself" "don't ask what America can do for you but what you can do for America" "Tear down that wall" "I have a dream"
It would have been better to leave out Cicero and then make the list the greatest orators of the 20th Century. The reason I say this is because to include all times would be considering all people of all nations. For example, at least one or two of the Chinese Emperors should be on your list, as well as some Christian and Catholic preachers from the last two thousand years. Instead, you made a list that, with one notable exception, is pretty much limited to the 20th Century. So it really is a list of the most impressive or greatest orators of the 20th Century.
You have to take into account that this is a Western-English perspective, and this channel is Canadian too. Rankings are subjective, and any number of these speakers listed could justifiably gain top spot on another list. Winston was a supreme orator in the English speaking world, his quotes are both inexhaustible and timeless. Here are just a few: *_"You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life."_* *_"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."_* *_"If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.”_* --------------------------- And finally, here is my personal favourite (and a 20 second video to listen to it being spoken!): *_"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense."_* m.ruclips.net/video/L90BCEVH41U/видео.html

I'm surprised Kennedy is placed above Roosevelt. JFK used clever and familiar tools in his speeches, such as the rule of three. But for sheer power, tone and oratory, I really think FDR is so much better. FDR doesn't constantly refer to his notes and, as such, has a more direct and lasting communication with his audience; his voice has more gravitas, and speeches such as 'fear nothing but fear itself' and the declaration of war on Japan must rank as among the most enduring of time. That said, Churchill was the great and consistent genius.
A lady I knew who was one of the finest intellect/scholar and United Nations Under Secretary told a fellow diplomat that Fidel Castro had the most disciplined mind of any human of whom she was aware. She heard him speak for 3 1/2 hours. He never repeated himself once, never consulted a note, and every sentence was a new idea. Fidel did not need speech writers like Kennedy and the mentioned Americans with the exception of Abraham Lincoln. Fidel’s “History Will Absolve Me” and his 1979 UN address on behalf of the Non Aligned Movement are but two of the many immortal speeches that adorned his illustrious life. I heard Fidel speak live on several occasions and I have read and watched on public media some of those American “greatest orators” of history. Not one can match him. With such a self righteous culture is it any wonder that Donald Trump is already claiming to be the most successful US president ever.
Winston Churchill a great orator, motivator a true master of the English language right time, right hour ..."Never in the field of human words was so much owed by so many to one person".
You can't make a list claiming to be the best orators in history, and then stock it entirely with people from the last hundred or so years. You just said "history" so you could include Cicero. Maybe do some actual research for these sorts of lists.
Being an amazing orator isn't the words themselves...large part of it is the impact of it. To accurately judge thr impact then you would need audio. I fully understand what you're saying though
People like Democritus or Julius Caesar or Napoleon may have been great speakers, we'll never know. There are no recordings. Certainly their words are powerful but what was the delivery? A good example is Jonathan Edwards. Those who are familiar with him know his famous "Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God" sermon, it's a supposed to be a classic 'fire and brimstone" sermon. That is until you read contemporary accounts of Edward's preaching, which say he read his sermons in a flat monotone from the pulpit. Powerful words, no skill at delivery.
Jesus did exist and his words had so much influence that we still know who he is 2000 years later. Whether or not you believe he performed miracles doesn't change that.
Brekner Catalin lol I'm not really religious but it's an undeniable fact that a man by the name of Jesus of Nazareth existed and drew crowds around 2000 years ago
@@meezanlmt He established a dynasty that lasted 440 odd years (1500 yrs if you include the Eastern Roman Empire). It doesn't hold up to what the Pharaohs achieved but we measure leaders by the longevity of their achievements. The Roman rule of law, farming, irrigation, coinage, even government still influences today's society. Much of it is owed to Julius Caesar.
Just say greatest orators of the twentieth century and be done with it, Don't call this video greatest orators in "history" because you didn't even scratch surface in terms of listing the greatest orators in "history". There were people who gave a speech and brought kingdoms and empires with their charisma.
That is very true. I do want to clarify that I am NOT a nazi supporter/sympathizer, but we did some horrible things in WW2 that go unsung, especially the Soviets. There were actually people who celebrated Germans freeing them from the Soviets.
So this list is 10% Indian 10% roman 10% German 20% African 20% British 30% American Wow perfect... amazing and 70% English.... well done you have done a perfect job
The talent of being a most powerful orators in history seems to belong to: either people who try to do good (Ghandi, Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr) or to the worst of the worst (Thatcher, Reagan, Roosevelt, Hitler and Churchill)
Miguel.Ledesma Ledesma even if Jesus existed, I am pretty sure you would have found more talented speakers in Rome than some uneducated boy in an unimportant province
Well, not every one but the vast majority. If you go with this argument than you have to argue that Justin Bieber is the best musician in history. All his fans cannot be wrong, can they?
While most people do not know the impact Cicero had, his oratory skills were purely masterful, and remains unrivaled until today. His speeches were many times given without prior preparation, and yet he managed to string together words in such a powerful fashion to defeat his enemy with solely words. Had he been as well known as others, he would have been ranked #1 by far.
@@freckleheckler6311 Hitler's speech was a lot more appealing to the people because of the situation they were in. Cicero did not need such help to persuade the people.
I think barak obama must be the greatest of all times orator. He has a kind of really natural carisma that captivated and mesmerised his audeince then anyoneelse before.
I know that there is not a lot of footage for the speeches of Vladimir Lenin, but I still think that he deserves a spot on this list. If you watch some of the videos of him speaking you instantly notice both his body language, the words he chose and the way in which he delivered them. After all, he was a main contributor when it came to raising the Russian people into revolution.

BGRuthless haha exactly
@@BGRuthless I don't think he means it in that sense. I believe the point he's trying to make is that the channel is a bit biased shall I say in terms of the placement of American (and allies) orators in comparison to others (maybe for political correctness?).

This ranking is very anglophile. They forgot one of the best orators: Fidel Castro, who used to talk 6 hours or more.

Wait, where is Joseph Goebbels?
Goebbels was probably never going to be on the list, after all Mussolini didn't make it nor any communist at all.

I am disappointed Sir Tom Oswald Mosley was not on this.
Danny Wolf there is something so eloquent and appealing about his speeches that seems to be lacking in British politics today. I’m no supporter of the British union of Fascists but you can see why Mosley appealed to a certain part of the British public in Pre-war Britain.
“Truth is the daughter of time, not of authority.” Francis Bacon.

First of all hitler is a way above everyone in the list
Second of all it is mostly mentioned english speakers while there are many other talented orators in other languages like for example : Fidel castro of Cuba, boumedien of algeria, de gaule of france... Etc
So most powerful orators (preference given to English speakers?). Look beyond USA and cliches for your lists Watchmojo.
Donny Sobchak Look at the video about military ships. I think it is biased.
Watchmojo is a Canadian company. Why would they be biased and incline towards American orators?
Rey Rivera They've post more videos about US than Canada
Ghandi and Nelson Mandela and Hitler are about the farthest thing from American. As to why English is so dominant, it's because they are really pulling from recorded speakers and between England and the US they have without question culturally dominated the globe in the last 150 years

Let truth be told:
1- Hitler
2- Mussolini

Mussolini doesnt deserve to be anywhere near this list

Mussolini was a great orator whether you like it or not. Heck, watch Hitler and Mussolini’s speeches and note how much he influenced the Chancellor.
in a world with people like reagan, churchill, mandela, cicero, etc. Mussolini would, although he was a gifted orator, not even pop up near the top 30, let alone the top 10
Malcolm x should have definitely been on the list if it’s purely about public speaking skills.

Jesus should be Number 1
Robert M. Dunn If you think that Jesus is fiction, i'm sorry for you bro. Jesus of Nazareth existed. I'm not saying he is the Christ, but the historical Jesus existed
1504Shawn Real people only.
No serious or credible historian questions his existence only if he was Christ or not
I am not religious.

@Rob Roy There is scientific proof, that Jesus did exist. Sure we can't tell, that he is the person described in the bible, but a person at the time and place with the name did exist.
Well if Jesus really existed... Doubts

A poorly researched vedio
MAHATMA GANDHI was involved in the freedom struggle of two countries and was an inspiration to both Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.
yes, but it wasn't his speeches that were inspirational as much as it was his actions. but honestly can we really say he deserves all the praise he received? independence wasn't achieved because of him, despite what many people seem to believe.
doommajor ye true, independence was going to happen anyway. Britain gave independence to all its countries and so did france.

He was just so charismatic.

aux chottes les cocos!
So it really is a list of the most impressive or greatest orators of the 20th Century.
demosthenescomes to mind. He wasn't around during a recent big war but he was a great speaker.
But at least they filled half the list with 'muricans
#4 gives me chills with the recent "official" in office and his followers having similar fervor.
Here are just a few:
*_"You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life."_*
*_"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."_*
*_"If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.”_*
---------------------------
And finally, here is my personal favourite (and a 20 second video to listen to it being spoken!):
*_"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense."_*

RIP John F Kennedy (Purple Heart US Navy WWII).
“We choose to go to the moon” and human landing on the moon is far more historical than the declaration of war on Japan
SADDAM HUSSEIN WSS GREAT..
Winston Churchill a great orator, motivator a true master of the English language right time, right hour ..."Never in the field of human words was so much owed by so many to one person".
You certainly are far from being a master of English punctuation.
The power of the spoken word cannot be underestimated.
..Mussolini should have had an honorable mention..I think he influenced others' orating style, as well...
You can't make a list claiming to be the best orators in history, and then stock it entirely with people from the last hundred or so years. You just said "history" so you could include Cicero. Maybe do some actual research for these sorts of lists.
Jaantony Riv Wolf High-Ironjade Vikary like Pericles or Socrates
Hard to know how well their delivery is without recordings
Being an amazing orator isn't the words themselves...large part of it is the impact of it. To accurately judge thr impact then you would need audio. I fully understand what you're saying though
Jaantony Riv Wolf High-Ironjade Vikary shut the fuck up and keep quiet
People like Democritus or Julius Caesar or Napoleon may have been great speakers, we'll never know. There are no recordings. Certainly their words are powerful but what was the delivery?
A good example is Jonathan Edwards. Those who are familiar with him know his famous "Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God" sermon, it's a supposed to be a classic 'fire and brimstone" sermon. That is until you read contemporary accounts of Edward's preaching, which say he read his sermons in a flat monotone from the pulpit. Powerful words, no skill at delivery.
Some people wonder why Jesus isn't on this list. Jesus is a fictional character, he doesn't belong here.
Brekner Catalin ...Except that he did historically exist. Not being religious myself, there is no denying his actual existence.
Jesus did exist and his words had so much influence that we still know who he is 2000 years later. Whether or not you believe he performed miracles doesn't change that.
Brekner Catalin Ho yeah because you live before him,how old are you kid, respect THE others
