- When storing ammo in an ammo can (.50 Cal, Saw, Fat .50, .30 Cal, etc.), you want it to be as free of rust as it can be before storing your ammo. No matter which ammo can (.50 Cal, Saw, Fat .50, .30 Cal, etc.), using a CLP on the can will ensure good preventative maintenance on your part, and using a rubber protectant or CLP on the gasket will keep it from cracking and then making the ammo can not work properly. This is very, very easy to do and will save you some money on the long run, as storing tons of money in ammo cans that will rust away is not good.
I got a Vietnam era .50 cal can with M82 7.62mm yellow stenciling from my dad with significantly more rust that the can in this video. Hoppe's #9 broke the rust down and I simply scrubbed it out with an old toothbrush. I left it outside on a hot day to air it out and put a little RemOil on the rubber seal. Now it holds 4 or 5 25 shell boxes of 12GA really nice.
any hydrcarbon based product will immediately start to dissolve the rubber gasket. Use a silicone based product
FAQ: Is Ballistol safe on rubber?
A: Yes! Ballistol will clean rubber and prevent it from drying out. Caution should be used when using Ballistol on foam rubber

Only silicone lubricants should be used on the gasket! Anything else will eat away at the rubber!
Glad to see that I am not the only person so OCD as to treat ammo cans with ballistol. I had an almost full can that sprayed out into an ammo can -- because I was packed it too tight with all kinds of shit as a make shift range bag for 22 plinking and ended up depressing the spray nozzle -- poured it out into a canning jar and have been using it thus prior to your video. Nice job passing this tip along to others.
vaseline is petroleum based, rubber is petroleum based. remember, like materials dissolve each other. So the best option would be silicone.

It shined right up! My ammo cans stay indoors so I never think to clean them but I can see the that I need to at least condition the gasket. Thanks for the tip.
WD 40. Rube it down with a towel let it sit a day or so . Take the whole can to the kitchen sink wash it in and out , with Palmolive dish soap . Rinse dry thoroughly . Bingo you have a brand-new can . That could be stored anywhere you want in the house to include in your closet with your clothes. Just make sure it's dried out thoroughly . I would use silicone lube or spray on those gaskets . I guarantee you the can and contents will outlive you . If you're leaving it outside in the elements , i'd wipe down the access WD-40 and leave it alone . Just my two cents , ballast all may be good , but smells like shit . And it's not cheap . Original US G.I. ammo cans brand-new we're just painted and that's it . The WD-40 is just to get the shit off of the box. Doesn't get easier than that life's too short to overthink it.
my local mil. surplus store got some in. they look brand new or stored inside somewhere, I picked up 8 of them, they were $10 ea.
I only buy mil surplus Ammo cans. To ensure a tight seal, I take an empty Ammo can and light a candle inside, lock it down and let it burn the air out. When you go to open it, if the can is hard to open and sucks air in on opening - indicating an airtight seal - it’s a keeper. If any surface rust, I scrub the rust off with a wire brush and spray paint the can with black hammer tone, which is a nice look.
Never really thought about wiping down the entire can with oil. Guess that's a good idea though. I usually wash my cans with hot soap and water after getting them home, then put some oil on the seals every so often. Looks like I've got some work ahead of me.
ive been sanding them down and repainting them to get rid of the rust, plus it makes a fun little project on a boring, cold, drizzly sunday.
I use Superlube silicone o rings grease on the rubber seal.
Good video. Place I buy em has 2 stacks of these things. One has the same stuff you used on em for an extra buck. Pay 11.00 bucks and be done with it. Goid video as always.
Ballistol says it is for rubber. As do many things non silicone based. But I know what your saying.
Can I use remoil?
by spraying that garbage on the gasket you just started dissolving it.
Advise what is most commonly used silicone product for these seals please
I live in NM,high desert with low humidity environment. My storage are regular ammo cans. I store all my ammo in walk in closet(single guy). I have central A/C and heat. So in a nutshell no need to baby ammo cans. I do like the video though.
I have recently been given a 'new' ammo can (It looks like it's been purchased from Bass Pro, Dicks, or something similar). It does not look like it was a military surplus item because it's just too clean. If it was a surplus item it was completely overhauled. However it doesn't have any stenciling on it at all... I would like to simulate the 70's or 80's ammo can military stenciling. Does anyone know of of a 'pre-made' stencil specifically for a 50 cal can? (for sale that is).
Bacon grease the seals.
Very true
how do you check the seals on old ammo cans?????
How do we reseal an ammo can, Or change out the seal?
Yes, I have some planned.
Wipe gasket down with damp cloth and use grease with the tip of your finger use very little just enough don't use spray oils etc as these have chemicals in that eat away at the vulcanised rubber seal
Just WD40 or any other oil. If i do have to clean it, i don't use water i use Diesel or gasoline instead. I don't like water on cans, tools and weapons....
I usually just repaint them
thank you
great vid berz, but can you do some more survival like videos though? and kind of mix the combat, guns and knives with some more nature, bushcraft and survival stuff. thanks :)
1200 rounds loose 5.56
Vasoline is a better choice for the inner gasket of an ammo can. It will not deteriorate the rubber seal like most aerosal cleaners/de-greasers.
Do you need some guidance, I am guessing yes by you inquiry...lmao
$500 to $1,000 of ammo in one can? What are you storing, .338 Lapua ;) ?
This comment didn’t age well!!! Haha. He’s probably storing 500 rounds or less at those prices now!
Hahahahahahaha ,this comment it's showing its age and relevance
okay, I'm a cheap guy with no Ballistol or frog lube. what other kinds of products can I use? WD40? CLP? I've heard veggie or even motol oil can work, too........
oh ok... never used ballistol before
Using the ballasts inside the can, would you say its ok to have loose ammo in the can
Sure, I do all the time. As does the military.
oohh god.... new layout, how you distract me from the video so.
What about using clp?
How to wipe stuff down. Learned that at 6. Well done time thief. I feel so qualified now
Old post. But what an asshole.
lol, good deal
Silicone grease is what you should be using on the rubber seal. Your spreading bad information.
very interesting!
