I have a large patch in WV..The tres are different size with tallest being about 20 feet. There are about 30 trees but no fruit. I did not check them in the spring to see if they bloomed. I did not know they were there until now. There is not fruit.. Any recommendations for this coming spring.?
@christophertaylor1575 great question. at 20' tall and in WV (y'all got Pawpaw so pollination likely not an issue), i'm guessing it's too much shade. the stand is plenty mature if the tallest is 20'. i have seen solid fruiting in trees in shade (like, along the C&O Canal trail). but typically, Pawpaw don't fruit well if there's too much shade. possibility #2 is that it's a 'turd' patch -- a colony of poor fruiting trees. YES, look for flowers in early early spring (sorta, late winter). there's is a rare bug that eats the fleshy part of the flower (Pawpaw Peduncle Borer). www.petersonpawpaws.com/diseases-pests-butterflys/ overall, I'm guessing it's sunlight. i just passed through Wardensville, Moorefield & Petersburg. If you see no flowers, then it's a dud patch (if there's such a thing). If flowers and no fruit, then it's a pollination issue (probably). Find and sow seeds from any Pawpaw fruit. Of course, that's not til next Sept. Or plant some seedlings if you can locate em. State Nurseries sell them for cheap. While trying to control mold on plants. I sprayed them with milk. It helped. But i learned something... I learned milk. The more milk fat, the better. Will draw in flys fast! Within minutes on a july day. Likley is slower in early spring. But it will bring them in fast. It is very short lasting and would need to be applied multiple times during bloom If used for polynation. * The fruit fly/house fly leaves as soon as the milk is gone. But the amount you'll see for 2-6hrs is impressive. I used a 50/50 whole milk to H2o.
You'd be better off just to take a dump under your tree . You draw tons of flies and fertilize your tree at the same time. Contrary to what people say, flies and beetles will devour your excrement and leave behind exactly what your trees need to thrive . Just saying .
