While the ZR2 seems to be doing very well, I think the real star of this clip is the driver. It's hard to find clips with good demonstrations of proper off-road driving technique. This is the best one i've found to date. This one shows that with proper driving a stock truck can make it over brutal trails without lifting or huge tires. I tip my hat to you.
That's probably because it is difficult to do those trails on 31 inch tires that don't allow airing down much. Front lockers do help a lot off road but they also compromise steering a lot. They wouldn't always help in a lot of the off camber stuff because they force one wheel to slip a little when turning and in the off-camber stuff it can make the truck slide more than with the lock off.
As a ford guy i am truly considering this truck. Nice work, beautiful country scenery and nice wheeling. This really showcases this trucks capabilities better than anything else I've seen.
Oh, no doubt it's more capable than the Taco in stock form. The ZR2 has proper lockers all the way around, bigger tires, better shocks, more articulation, rock sliders, better tires, and (I think) more ground clearance. Though most journalists don't do the taco justice either. They mostly just run them through a sandbox and go "look how capable it is".
@@Kcducttaper1 it's got a little less ground clearance than the TRD Pro (due to the shock mounts) and less of an approach angle, but the front locker and stock tires are a solid advantage.
looks like lots of fun ... thanks for sharing these videos and info. I picked up a 2018 ZR2 last week ... and really liking these trucks. Hope to get out on some trails around here soon (Vancouver Island BC), but wont't be anything as challenging as what is seen in your videos.
I plan on buying one of these babies at the end of the year if all works out. Finishing college and there are a few jobs I have lined up already being that Im also a veteran. Life experience over the standard 22 year old college grad, plus security clearance is a big help.. LoL. Anyway, I test drove both the gas and diesel and I like the diesel. I live in Colorado and this truck would be perfect for this state. Going to the mountains to hike, shoot, camp or go off roading is awesome here. Cant wait.
That ZR2 is impressive. Be more awesome if it came on 33s or 35s. What's more amazing is how that big ass H2 followed you down those tight trails. I bet that H2 has a bunch of offroad pinstripes. Lol Chevrolet should pay you for showing the capability of the ZR2
What a wonderful truck, and equally wonderful driver.I've never been impressed with GM's 'off-road packages'. They've usually been nothing more than trim levels. Finally, they build a truck that is actually capable off-road. And as others have said, it was very, very nice actually seeing the capabilities of the truck put to the test on a proper trail.
Agree completely - there was a ZR2 package on an old S10 that had the makings of something better than trim - but check out the Tracker ZR2 - just a total embarrassment. I'd hate to be the marketing guru who came up with that turd. Picked up my ZR2 yesterday - already 650km with about 50 on steep logging roads in 4 high only - suspension very impressive. Highway drive-ability also impressive. Amenities very functional. Now if the thing is as reliable as my GMC Sierra 1500.....I've got a winner!
Traded my 16' TRD PRO 4Runner in on this Chevy Colorado ZR2 (I have the gas version) I was worried I was gonna lose some of my off road ability. Nope nothing to worry about. Mine will NEVER see the bad ass performance that you just showed us since I live in Florida but its nice to know that if I do ever get in that situation my Chevy got the balls it takes to get there. Great video man. Nice winch set up too. Any possibility you can do a video on the that winch set up? You just know your going to get asked at least a 1000 times so you might as well do one! Thanks man.
My dad had a 2010 Tacoma. Considered a Raptor but it's impossible to find them for the $50,000 MSRP. More like $70,000. His other choices were the TRD Pro Racoma and Rubicon. The Styling of the ZR2 and the Diesel option made him jump ship and get the ZR2 over the TRD Pro. He likes the ZR2 way more then the Tacoma.
One can always find a tough(er) trail where more lift and bigger tires helps. The ZR2 did very well for what it has and for most buyers, this is more than they will ever tackle even once. I noticed how much the tires were aired down... really need beadlockers if you're going that low. BTW nice H2. Very nice seeing one in action and not on the streets.

Interested in the winch mount also. Very clean looking. Spent all last night trying to find a winch mount for my 2017 zr2.... which I just picked up on Sat by the way. Would like to put a Warn Zeon in the front.
Next time bring zr2 and Tacoma trd pro and in the end off trail say few words about both, how they handle, and which one is better, only in place like that you can see which one is better, not in some shine trails, trail like this one is real test, thank you and I appreciate your work, best test you can find on RUclips,
Is this based on the isuzu d-max? If so, its a pretty reliable truck. And it comes with dual lockers from factory.. not too shabby. edit: apparantly its based on the isuzu. not bad.
Hey nice job! I'm sure the ZR2 is more than capable! But it's the Hummer I'm more concerned with! I'd like to have seen that also in the video except just the hood! That must be an H3? As an H2 would be a little too large? After all the H3 is the last gen Colorado underneath!
CAMARO_KYLE that's how you learn to wheel. If you noticed he took a new line each time. Good job for him. Use it them as a last resort. That's how a lot of wheelers think. Sense of pride knowing you didn't have to use it. That is how I first was when I got my Rubicon. Once I got through plenty of tough areas with out them, I started using them more regularly to make my day easier, because I know I could do it without them. CAMARO_KYLE IFS + front locker = sketchy, especially on that much traction. He needed to tune his wheels to clear the obstacle. No locker needed in 99% of scenarios. The diesel and tires do more in everyday situations.
Man you need more views on this!! This is how you properly offroad with this truck. I'm happy to see the potential this truck has and where it can go. Btw where did you get that winch for the ZR2?
This! This is why I want one of these trucks! That 1% of the time "I" would want the diesel over the gas motor! Otherwise the gas motor would be more practical for everyday use. Wait a minute! That's the diesel motor? Never mind then...

I don't know. The zr-2 is supposed to have lockers front and rear. He made some things look difficult.
That's probably because it is difficult to do those trails on 31 inch tires that don't allow airing down much. Front lockers do help a lot off road but they also compromise steering a lot. That was some incredible driving. I can't believe the sidewalls can hold up to that.
By far the best video I've seen of the ZR2 showing of its intended capabilities.
Nice work! It's nice to see what the ZR2 can actually do since motoring journalists often don't give them justice.
Kcducttaper1 as a Tacoma owner I will admit this new truck is about as capable if not just capable the TRD off road.

GM. Should make the zr2 duramax manual
why? no benefit and having to deal with a 3rd pedal in these fine situations blows.
I would say reliability and cost if you intend to keep it for a long time and also for every other situation that isn't on rocks.

epic but I would never bring a 50k (in canada) vehicle in such trails unless forced to in extreme circumstances... nice to know it can do it though.

Soft Topper, works well, can collapse down to give you full access to the bed

Custom winch mount with a Tuff Stuff 12.5K winch. Tail pipe was cut and set further under the truck to prevent hitting it

A 1" body lift will leave the suspension and geometry untouched and allows the ZR2 to fit 33" tires. This is according to GM engineers.
