    nothing but love and respect to you Ming, i have a few issues with your arguments. firstly i believe that the Jesus coming back from the dead is a metaphor for being "born again" and the people claiming to have seen him after death is a way of describing the rise of individuals in that time gaining faith. also as much as following the bible is valid, it is a book with agenda and cant really be used as an argument that also goes for other religious figures in the past writing about Jesus. my only other issue with this video is that you have ALOT of young people within your fanbase and displaying Christianity as fact to this audience can be dangerous. in saying that I am bias I went to a fundamentalist Christian School for just shy of 5 years in my youth and saw this way of teaching religion ruin a lot of good peoples lives ,including mine for a long time. (that is a dramatic and unlikely outcome but it just worries me) . im not having a shot at you or your faith, you are a beautiful human and it warms my heart to see how much your faith has impacted your life. I just feel the need to speak from the heart. One love!

    • @Tingman
      @Tingman  6 месяцев назад +1

      And the fact that you speak from the heart is why I love you too Ben. You're a beautiful human as well. My heart breaks to see Christianity used as a means of control, and the negative ways it's been wielded in many young people's lives is so awful :( I would never want to do that. I agree that much of my audience is young, which is why I'm careful to only talk about what I have carefully investigated myself, and my message is always that people investigate it for themselves too. I only do this twice a year, and I think I make it pretty clear that anyone and everyone is welcome on this channel! People using Jesus for their own agenda is so terrible. But people pointing to Jesus as he really is, well I haven't found anything better. Love, acceptance, not based on feelings, but real actions. Solid proof that we are loved. Even if the resurrection could be a metaphor, we also need to be honest about where the historical evidence points. If Jesus didn't actually rise from the dead, I don't think Christianity would exist at all.
      Ok that's enough of a ted talk, look forward to seeing you again soon my brother! It's been too long! Take it easy.

    I heard you were australian, and at first was excited that u were making a video, sort of going against the recent trend of your country slipping into religious fundamentalism, but to my dismay, seems like you're also christian. a bit disappointed, but nonetheless intrigued by what you have to say.
    Here are some of my thoughts on the points you bring up in the video, and why i personally dont find them convincing
    1. "it is well documented."
    Well, yes, it is, and you do mention the two points most apologists bring up, the Josephus and Tacitus documentation. You mention that these are from writings really close to his life. This isnt entirely true. In the case of Josephus, the scholarly consensus is that while mention of Jesus is original, some elements of the text show signs of later Christian emendation. Tacitus's and Josephus's mentions of jesus are actually quite scant. They are not accounts per se. Tacitus is writing about the great fire in 64 AD, and mentions the blame put on the Christians by Nero. About all that Tacitus tells about Jesus is "suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus." (Annals 15.4)
    I do agree that Josephus's accounts are fairly reliable for the most part. The specific overlap with Christianity occurs in three passages. One refers to the death of James the brother of Jesus. A second refers to the death of John the Baptist. The third is the most disputed, and based on internal and external evidence seems to have been altered,. A reconstruction of his longest passage omits any suggestion that Jesus was more than human, the Messiah, or the resurrection. It tells us no more than you would expect someone like Josephus to know and believe about Jesus - a charismatic leader who performed some kind of signs, was crucified, and left a significant group of followers both Jew and Greek. I don't doubt at all that someone like Jesus existed. But to say he actually came back to life and was the divine son of god? Probably not.
    2. "the romans could not disprove it"
    For the reasons you stated in the video, yes, the Romans were highly motivated to disprove such a claim. However, you seem to be operating under the assumption that the only reason why the early church came to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead was because they did not find the body. But that hardly seems to be the origin of the belief. Besides, just a missing body would hardly be a good enough reason to construct an entire religion around the idea that a person had risen from the dead.
    The earliest written account of the Resurrection is found in 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11. This account makes no reference to the idea of a missing body. Instead, the belief in the resurrection is apparently based on appearances of the risen Jesus -- that is to say, of personal experiences of the presence of Jesus after he had died.
    The story of a missing body only appears a few decades later in Mark 16. But even there, the missing body is not really seen as a proof of anything. The disciples are rather encouraged to go to Galilee and to experience the presence of the risen Jesus themselves. (v. 7)
    Another note is whenever they crucified someone (which would be for crimes against the Roman Empire, not blasphemy against the Jewish religion) they kept the person on the cross for weeks after they died as a warning to anyone else wanting to do what said criminal did. The Romans allowing Joseph of arimathea (who most likely is a fictional person) to take Jesus down from the cross is laughable. They would never allow it.
    3. "the resurrected Jesus was seen by a lot of people"
    That claim for appearing to 500 people at once is a laughable farce.
    1 Corinthians 15: 3-8, we read: "For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance : that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born."
    Here, Paul is claiming that at some time after Jesus rose from the dead and before he ascended into Heaven, he appeared before a crowd of more than 500 men and women. He does not state where this happened or who was in the audience, but he does assert that some of these people remained alive at the time he was writing the letter, about 25 years after the alleged event. Because Corinth lies about 800 km from where this event supposedly occurred, it would have been difficult for anyone living in Corinth to investigate the claim.
    What we do know is that none of the gospels, all written after Paul wrote this letter, discuss Jesus appearing before a large crowd after the resurrection. This is curious, because this would have been the most impressive evidence for the resurrection, the one event that would have been able to convince skeptical potential converts. This is including Q, the hypothetical source that Matthew and Luke were thought to have been based on.
    Also, none of the other Biblical epistle writers mention anything about it, even those alleged to have been written by the apostles. Add to that, no historians living in the time and region mention it. And none of eyewitnesses, 500 strong, wrote anything about it, at least anything that has survived for posterity. Christians often use this verse to support their belief in the resurrection of Jesus, claiming that 500 people could not have been hallucinating the same image at the same time. This is true, but what is also true is that if this event had actually happened, it would have jump started Christianity in ways that were not observed in the First Century, and it would have convinced the Jews living in Jerusalem and the surrounding areas that Jesus was the true Messiah.
    This is because the eyewitness testimony would have spread virally across the land. As a result, It is likely that there would not be the division we see today between Judaism and Christianity.
    But this didn’t happen, and further, there is no supporting documents to back up this claim. It is clearly something Paul made up to impress likely converts to the faith. It raises a question of Paul’s integrity and causes an objective person to question everything else that he wrote.
    4. "the sudden and unstoppable birth of christianity"
    In the first three centuries, Christianity grew at a rate of 2-3% per year. This means a group of 100 Christians had to get 2-3 net new converts per year to hit that. I'd hardly call that "sudden". The numbers come from Ehrman's The Triumph of Christianity, which cites Rodney Stark.
    When it comes to causes of popularity, there's the "4 Es model", based on e.g. Dodds' Pagan and Christian in an Age of Anxiety:
    Christianity was exclusivist
    Christianity was evangelizing
    Christianity was eschatological
    Christianity was egalitarian
    It was the only religious system at the time which had all four of these features. Every other religious system only had some but not others. It's the combination that did the trick. Additionally, Christianity was adamantly monotheistic. So as a heathen, you are willing to listen about the new god and as you are convinced you are encouraged to stop being pagan all together. So it’s evangelizing people that have no defensive reaction to new info and once you are in you displace their old religion.

      Amazing response! I'd so love to jump into addressing each point you made, but from experience I've found that doing so in a comment section loses clarity and nuance. Happy to continue this in DMs, although I suspect that you (and I?) have both already made up our minds about this! I'm always curious about this though - is your clearly very well researched and informed view because of general interest, formal education, or because you came out of Christianity? Or a combination?
      I also appreciate your references! I've read a bunch of Bart Ehrman's stuff and like the perspective he gives. I find Richard Bauckham's views provide good balance. It is tricky to sift between agendas, because sometimes it's clear that certain writers have a priori type conclusions that they're trying to prove, whether Christian or non-Christian. And indeed, same for us. I always have to remind myself to engage with perspectives that I might initially disagree with.
      Anyway, thanks again for the comment, all the best!

      Yes, I did come out of christianity. Am actually a pastor's kid, and my entire family is generally very religious. I left the faith at about 10th grade, and I remember having an edgy atheist phase where I would watch a lot of videos on RUclips like debates and critiques of apologetics. I now don't rlly engage much but sometimes I do go back to the old habit of doing some research to at least to have something written for the opposite atheistic side (I recall looking through this comment section and seeing mostly religious people commenting in support, which ofc isn't a bad thing)
      Yeah, I discovered bart ehrman quite recently, through a podcast he was a guest of by cosmic skeptic. I could tell he definitely leans torwards the skeptical and atheistic side in his biblical analysis but I definitely welcome that. Will check out bauckham as well!

      I’m not super well versed on all the details and evidence but the way you talk about not letting Jesus down from the cross early was interesting. I don’t know the evidence but the events don’t really line up since you didn’t mention any Roman documents stating that theory could be true, and the rest of your argument goes kind of under the assumption that Jesus was let down early. Plus, Ponchos Pilot was sympathetic for Jesus and tried to plead his case and therefore likely would allow the exception.
      Another thing, Jesus isn’t exactly the only evidence for Christianity. While the evidence is difficult surrounding him, the Bible in general is incredibly accurate compared to every other religion. I keep remembering this young Sheldon clip of Sheldon saying stuff about how gravity is just perfect to support life in the universe, which would be insane without a creator. There are many other highly unlikely factors in creating life which would be nearly impossible to occur by chance. Those facts combined with the fact that Christianity and the Bible are the most (by far) accurate religions (and a bit of Pascal’s wager), I can firmly stand by God in a logical standpoint.

      @Tingman  5 месяцев назад

      I've watched plenty of videos by atheists disproving Christianity and I think that if videos like that get you mad, you're not as sure of your beliefs as you think you are. People who are truly open minded would welcome honest and rational discussions, religious or not! So I'm with you if you think people shouldn't get mad at videos like this.

    • @p1chu
      @p1chu 5 месяцев назад +1

      Of course I agree that one, regardless of faith, should not get "mad" at anyone making videos on the topic. I am merely stating that, usually, when a christian content creator makes a video regarding a similar topic, the reception is overwhelmingly positive. Whereas, when someone even merely points out something dubious about christianity, the reception is overwhelmingly negative.
      A problem with your comment is, implicitly referring to this video as a "discussion". This video is, by definition, NOT a discussion, as a discussion involves more than one person.

    • @ColourfulXO
      @ColourfulXO 4 месяца назад

      @@roydenjons3513 Do you believe, Jesus, is God, or do you believe He was created and is satans brother? I've heard from many ex-Mormons, who have given their life over to, Christ. They have expressed all of the heresy within the Mormon church. Joseph Smith, for example was a false prophet. The book of Mormon is heresy. So much error.

    • @roydenjons3513
      @roydenjons3513 4 месяца назад

      @@ColourfulXO As members of the church, we recognize Jesus Christ as the God of the OT. When the OT mentions God, they are most likely referring to Christ. As mentioned in Hebrews 1, through Jesus Christ God created the worlds(not trying to attack the Trinity here😁). The world moaned after the crucifixion because it's maker had died. In Mosiah 15, it mentions Jesus Christ having the title of "The Father," because he was "concieved by the power of God." He is the First Born, The Only Begotten, the everlasting Redeemer and Saviour of the world(I'm not saying you disagree with these statements, BTW.) He is the Father of our salvation, if you will.
      If we apply this interpretation of the Oneness and Trinitarian verses, it makes just as much, if not more sense. God, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are One in purpose. They all want the exact same for us, Eternal Life(again, you probably don't dispute this, just mentioning it for my point.)
      I do believe that Satan is Christ's brother, but I do not believe that God created Satan, or at least, not directly. The King Follett's Discourse mentions the necessity that our spirits be eternal. If we were finite, and there was one definite beginning, then surely our bodies and spirits would eventually return to that same state of nothingness they were in before.
      If God did create the devil for our temptation, at least the way I see it, God would cease to be God. He is omnipotent and perfect, and a good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit. It could be claimed that God created Lucifer in the beginning, and he dessented afterward, but that would have to of been his choice. Satan being evil may have been a part of God's plan, but he couldn't have broughten it about.
      I don't understand what a good alternative for Satan being Christ's brother is, as I haven't really looked into that part of Theology that much, so if you feel the need to specify, feel free. 😁
      About the Book of Mormon being of the Devil... Yeah...
      I could honestly give a speech 3 hours long on this topic, but I'll just say this:
      The word Repent is mentioned 360 times within the BOM(maybe including refrences to repentance as well, IDK.)
      Why would Satan be inclining people to repent and come unto Christ? That is exactly opposite of what he wants to happen. Joseph Smith claimed that we can be like God. Despite this being true or False, again, this is exactly opposite of what the devil wants for us. He wants us to be tormented and enflamed in a state of everlasting damnation(again, Christians probably won't disagree, here.)
      Not to mention profound verses that invite the welcoming voice of the Holy Spirit(As mentioned by Tad R. Callister in a General Conference talk, sorry, forgot to add it before.) Everyone has beef with the whole term: Burning in the Bosom. That phrase, or one similar to it, is found in the Bible, you know.
      NO ONE can tell me that what I have felt is satanic.
      Ex. Mosiah 4:5-12, 30, Mormon 9(whole chapter), Alma 34(whole chapter), etc.
      No one can tell me that the spiritual experiences I have had through my Faith in God is fake. I can guarantee that, divine or not, the Book of Mormon is of God, and Joseph Smith, false prophet or not, was a good man. So many people have come closer to Christ through the Book of Mormon. No one can convince me otherwise.
      Here's the gist:
      I would challenge anybody, critics and all, to find me a single verse in the Book of Mormon that contradicts the Bible. A single verse, that's it. I'm not an expert, but I can confidently claim, that there is not a single verse found in the BOM that is unbiblical. I know that for a fact.
