Sad fact is that a mojority of the German sailors died. Normally the enemy ships will try to get as many of the men out of the water and take them as POWs. In the Bismarcks case, the attempt was stopped because a German Uboat was spotted in the area and 2.000 men drowned in the icy water, never to be seen again.
@@JaCKoP619 Actually U-556 Was nearby and was probably 1 of the 2 U-Boats spotted that was near Bismarck. Unfortunately the U-556 Can't help due to it coming back from a successful raid. All her Torpedoes were gone and the tragedy is Had the U-556 still had some it could have sink the HMS Ark Royal before it launched Swordfish Torpedo bombers before they could launch to hunt the Bismarck and disable it's steering according to the log books if you look at the dates. U-556 Observed the final fight of the Bismarck but due to low ammunition, supplies, and fuel U-556 had to leave. The other U-Boat that could have been spotted was the newly resupplied U-74 which had all their torpedoes and could wreck havoc upon the British fleet. so The British had to flee before u-74 had a chance to sink and slow the British fleet for more U-Boats to arrive.
The uboot spotting was a cruel lie by vengeful people with damaged egos who wanted to see the germans suffer and die. If the uboot danger was so high they would've canceled the attack..
@@ViewTube_Emperor_of_Mankind that's ad absurdum, friend. the Bismarck's overall objective was too great for the Royal Navy to simply 'give it up', the U-Boat threat was real, according to an Oxford Professor of History, U-74 and U-556 were nearby. it was recorded that U-74 could actually hear the Bismarck sink, and also was in visual range of the British fleet. it is for this reason therefore that the Royal Navy decided to disengage. it wasn't some cruel lie done by those who have damaged egos, wehraboo, but instead was a decision that was tough to make and had to be made because all other avenues were unforeseeable. an unfortunate reality, of course, as thousands of men lost their lives
During this engagement, one 16" shell from the HMS Rodney was visually tracked as it impacted the face of Bismarck's turret Bruno. A moment later, the entire turret detonated, eviscerating the ship's bridge crew with shrapnel and temporarily knocking out turret Anton with the shockwave. As the ships closed range and Rodney ended up close enough that her shells flew in almost flat trajectories, several of them were seen to pierce clean through the Bismarck's thinner upper armour and skim across the sea on the other side. Also during this engagement, the captain of Rodney - presumably deciding that his ship was soon to go in for a full refit so he might as well have some fun - ordered all nine of the ship's main guns fired in unison, as opposed to staggering them as was usual procedure. The resulting shockwave tore up the deck panels around her turrets and shattered every piece of glass and ceramic aboard the ship. Lastly, it is known that Rodney possessed submerged torpedo tubes and that these were fired in the engagement. While it is unknown if any hits landed, it is entirely within possibility that Rodney is the only battleship in history to have torpedoed another battleship. Hood may have heard boss music at the Denmark Strait, but Bismarck heard it all the same when facing Rodney.
@@kaiza3485 Old habits die hard in the Royal Navy. Their doctrine of superior gunnery over heavier displacement goes all the way back to the 17th century. In the age of sail, this mindset is perfectly fine and in most cases exactly what you want. But in a more modern naval engagement, it starts to show its age.
@@kaiza3485 This is something of an odd proposition. Jutland was comprised of both battleships and battlecruisers on both sides, with British ship losses down to dangerous handling of ammunition charges and ignoring safety procedures with regards to flash doors. Despite this the British still succeeded at Jutland. With regards to Hood, while her armour was aging somewhat by the start of WWII she was still more than heavily armoured enough to qualify as a fully-fledged battleship in many definitions, and her listing as a battlecruiser reflects the Royal Navy's tendency to refer to any particularly fast big gun ship as a battlecruiser, such as the Scharnhorsts (definitely battleships) and even some documents calling HMS Vanguard a "fully-armoured battlecruiser" later on. Moreover, Hood went into the fight with HMS Prince of Wales tagging along, a modern battleship. On paper, the odds at the Denmark Strait were quite strongly in favour of the British.
