- Have you ever wondered what our life would be like if we lived in a 2D world instead of a 3D world? Imagine you and your friends decide to play a new board game. You roll the dice and get 5 and 3. Your pawn moves 8 spaces on the flat squares. The next morning, you wake up to…something bizarre. All you can see is…lines? There’s no height, no up or down. You try to move your head. You can’t see feet below you or a ceiling above you. Your view is limited to left and right.
You try to jump - no luck. You can move, but only forward, backward, left, and right. You check out your room. There are no windows, just a line blocking you from going anywhere. The wall. You head to the right and left. As you approach objects, they get brighter. You finally find the door: a brown line you can push open. You’re a flat pawn and can't lift yourself from the board or climb on top of objects - you can only go around them. Your entire world is in 2D!

Fun fact: 3D games you play are 2D, things are smaller and gets bigger when you approach them which make you think its 3D, same thing in real life but you're the player there, it's funny but if you think about it for a moment you'll know what I'm talking about.
Wrong. Reality is 3D. Your eyes can literally sense depth (distance). It automatically adjust its focus based on the distance of an object, not the size. The only reason Reality appears 2D is because our eyes cannot bend the light coming from objects that's why we cannot see around objects with our eyes but we can feel, hear, smell etc around objects.
"3D" games are actually 2.5D

Your representation of a 2d world has depth, I feel a better representation would be a kids drawing of their flat family standing in front of their flat house or a side scrolling game.

@@elik.8113but how can they see a line in front of them? There has to be some height to that line for them to see anything at all. A piece of paper is a 3D object, so something living on that paper would have to have some access to the y-axis to see anything at all anything at all.
@@camdenritter7652 well that’s understandable to think but that’s just how it works, since if we went to the perspective of a 2D being it wouldn’t have depth. It gets weird too, because when we try and imagine seeing a line, we first, have to imaging the line with some depth because we can process it easier, and two we have to fill in the remaining space in our head with black or any color to fill it in with since we see with a 2D type of view. The 2D beings would only see the line and nothing else which is actually impossible for us to imagine. And from a higher dimensional perspective, a 4D person might just as easily say that we wouldn’t be able to see anything with a 2D perspective. It’s hard to explain it without any diagrams or pictures but yeah

Most people are living in a 2D would, especially people who are constantly living through their screen, the internet and the modern UI of the last 10 years have been totally flat, and it doesn’t seem to want to go away anytime soon.
Gosh, this is stuff I used to Daydream about in school lol, It's so Interesting to think how we would perceive such a Dimension :P

We are 3d creatures living in a 3d world but actually seeing in micro 3d. We only really see in actual 3d when an object is very near to our stereo optic eyes. I think most of our “depth” perception is really just pattern recognition of a perspective of the world we developed amazingly early. We understand rules of shading, geometry, size and more and our brain interprets reality based on past performance. That is why my Escher is so trippy

But this simply looks like 1 dimension instead of 2, 1D is basically only lines. 2D includes plane figures.
So for example, A sphere, like a tennis ball, would become a circle. It won't be non-existent. Same with tubes, which will turn into two parallel lines that connect one thing to another.
2D cartoons could be an example.

@freedeeztallbikes82 i mean theoretically a 2d would be visible as long as they can reflect light semi normally. But yeah there are no actual real life examples of 2d. 1d would be invisible (unless thats what a black hole is? Idk)
Would you really be able to see any lines though? Just think that anything that exists that we can see, no matter how small, will technically have width to it that can theoretically be measured. So would it be more like we can bump into and feel that each other are there, but not be able to see that other things are there? I think that what we would perceive as vision would just be various colors and arrangements of colors changing before our eyes.
I think that what he meant by saying "lines", at least it is how I understood it. Maybe more intuitive would be describing it as flat stripes.

Yea, I feel like I'm in a 2d world walking on a treadmill but moving through the picture & while knowing that I can see objects & a pick up an object & shift it around to see that I could understand that it could be moved around but its only a 2d object from seeing it in front me. For example: a cup, I could see the outline of the cup but the colors of the cup is on the cup inside the outlining of the cup. Another example: a painting of a house, its all a 2d painting but we could not see what is actually behind the house, so we just assume that there is a backyard or whatever a house looks from behind. But for me, its this eternal shadow that is holding the paint in place & my only understanding is to assume that the 3d perspective I retain will see around the objects & my understanding sees what it had already understood apart from feeling that there is this eternal void behind the object still. Its all a mental perspective that I see from within but have it very hard to view reality for what it is because I feel like Im creating everything as a perspective to see without any control over it. I could walk up to somebody & assume they are a human being but when I walk away without looking back to see if that was an actual human being or a percieved unconscious imaginative scenario of somebody to help alter this state of eternal loneliness I feel enclosed by. Overall im still pushing through these thoughts & digesting these perspectives & hearing the thoughts I mentally speak out & learn more about them. Nothing really at all makes sense to me other than I have these states of colors perceived to be aligned into a 2d picture or image that I am eventually roaming through as if it were a 3d aspect.

2D RPG games in a nutshell:
The thumbnail is already in the second dimension. We percieve the entire world in 2d. Our brain hyper processes to make sense of the 2d view which gives us 3d understanding
Yea that's not how it would have work, how do you expect the car to move or even you moving without any food for energy
2D world is simular to your shadow except the shadow is governed by another type of force that's 100% not connected to matter. Matter itself is 3D because it has depth in all forms. No concept of matter can relate to a 2D world except maybe the appearance. The only 2D objects that can exist in our 3D world are light and shadows and that's only when they hit a surface which is the only reason why we can see shadows or light.
Pretty sure you would only see lines. Since your eyes are not 3D. Lines would be different depending on light/darkness or colour. Super tunnel vision. The ability to measure distance would be greatly reduced.

Just to clarify things for everyone. Two dimensional objects only see lines, they only see length even though they are in a two dimensional world. We are 3 dimensional, we only technicly see up and down, but we have a sense of depth.

I don't think that you would see anything in a 2d world. There's no y-axis, and you need to have some height to see anything in front of you at all. A sheet of paper has some thickness to it, and a 2d person living on that sheet of paper wouldn't be able to see anything in front of them, because if they see an object in front of them, that means that there is some height to it. Because their plane has no height. You can look at a colored page from the side, but there is still some height to it and their needs to be height for you to see if anything is drawn on the paper at all
