  • Little by little, folks! Today a modify my front crossmember and finish the motor mounts for the 12 valve Cummins swap I'm doing on my 1950 Chevy 4400. My goal is to have it ready for cruise-ins this spring.
    Enjoy!

    When I was in high school back in the late 60s my friends dad restored on of these. Even then I remember it being a very old and beautiful truck. Good job. Enjoy all your videos.

      Thank you, Andrew! When I was a kid, my neighbor had a ‘57 Chevy pickup that he had repainted and I used to sit in and pretend to drive it. Im pretty sure that’s how I caught the bug😉

    Jason, for me...... too much cutin and fitin! I'd be using WAY too much
    shop language! But, the vision you have is coming together!
    Yeah, the weather does put a damper on things.
    I have an MG Midget that I have been putting a brake rebuild on since October! Temps came up to 50° yesterday but inside the garage is so damp and wet . The snow is gone, but the mud ! Sheesh!

      I hear ya! It was really strange. We went from the 20s to the mid 40s really quickly and everything metal inside my shop started sweating really bad. The wheels on my truck looked like I had just sprayed them with a hose.
      Good luck on your MG! When I was a kid, a family friend had one as well as an MGB GT. Fun cars!

    I was surprised to see that the 99 chevy front suspension tucked inside the fenders so well, very challenging to find a good fit for that era truck as they’re not that wide and most upgrades stick the wheels too far outside the fenders. I have a 47 Loadmaster 2 ton that I’d like to upgrade the front end on so I can do disc breaks and get away from the split rims. Curious as to where you had your wheels custom made from?

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  7 месяцев назад

      I got those from a company in Arizona called Lowboy Motorsports. There’s also a fella farther east called Dually King. I don’t know if you’ve seen my earlier videos but the stock Silverado wheels were practically rubbing on the fenders. I’m currently running 2” spacers along with the 10-lug adapters to actually push the wheels out far enough.

    Really enjoying watching this build. I have a 48 1 1/2 ton Chevy truck that I'm putting on a 91 chevy P30 motorhome frame (1 ton with 19.5 inch tires) I wished my cab was a nice as yours. Mine needs a bunch of rust repair work. Everything else is in good shape. Your air bag/ suspension set up has peaked my interest in doing something similar. I definitely don't need the dozen leaf springs and half a dozen overloads that are on the back. Need to shorten the frame too. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the next video.

    Impressive use of CAD (Cardboard Aided Design)! The older I get the more I feel the cold and although my shop is heated (I bring it up to 50 degrees when I'm working) the surfaces and tools are still at 40 degrees, so I don't feel like spending a lot of time out there. Great video thumbs up.

      The “Halfass Customs” channel calls it “beer CAD”😂 I’m hoping to insulate the rest of my shop this year. Outside of my wood shop I’m at the mercy of mother nature.

    Looks like good progress, Jason. Also, a great way to minimize fumes by sucking them back into the weld wire (you remembered this time) lol.

    Beautiful neat welds (says a casual, ignorant observer,). But how are you assessing the strength of the welds - and the requirements for removing, replacing structural elements?

      Thank you! Basically, if it breaks, I didn’t build it strong enough. 😂 I’m really just going with my gut.

    Progress is progress. It is a very cool truck and will even more cool when complete. Have you talked about body finishes? You going to paint it or leave the current patina? Thanks for the video.

    Card board can be pretty handy for patterns, I used to use cardboard from beer cases in patterns I made for my Driftboat parts for boats for myself & guides I used to work with. Hope to see you driving your custom truck. Thanks for the watch.

    What’s your background in metal fabrication? Our local school district has a good technical program that, amongst other things, has a large metal fabrication area.

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  8 месяцев назад

      I took a semester of metal shop in high school. Anything above that is trial and error. The welder I bought a few years ago really makes it easy to make a decent looking weld.

    Appreciate the videos on this truck. Ive got a 54 3600 im wanting to make a service truck out of. Good to know that some different offsets on the front and i wont have to rat rod delete the fenders and hood.

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! I think the 4400 fenders are a little wider than the 3600’s but I’m running a 2” spacer on top of the 10-lug adapter so if you’re building a dually, you should be fine.

    Dumb question from a non welder. I understand why you grind the metal before you weld but why after?

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  8 месяцев назад

      Basically I’m trying to blend the two pieces together. Make it look less like a welded joint and more like a formed, single piece.

    Nice work Jason, some good progress there. One question if I may.
    With all the modifications that have taken place, will you have to do any work on the steering geometry to achieve the necessary ride/handling characteristics?
    Thanks again for the interesting content

    • @NorthwestSawyer
      @NorthwestSawyer  8 месяцев назад +1

      The steering geometry is all essentially the same. The spacers I used on the hubs partially compensate for the inset “dually” front wheels I’m using. The problem I’m having is there’s no place to mount front shocks now that I have air bags. There is a company that makes custom control arms that have shock mounts integrated but they’re around $1,500. However I may not have a choice if I want front shocks.

    • @hondacrm306
      @hondacrm306 8 месяцев назад

      Right. I hadn’t appreciated the need for the airbags to be accompanied by front shocks for ride quality

      @NorthwestSawyer Thank you, doesn't time fly when your having fun. You do very interesting videos right up my street being a wood worker and also any thing metal, welding, machine shop etc and you're very good at it, better than me. I used to make as a living copper boilers for model steam trains in 5" and 7.25" gauge and anything that needed a boiler, and shipped all over the world, so have a well equipped workshop.
      Carry 9n the great work, I just love it, you're a clever lad for sure.
