    Hey, this is Ken from LG. What you're seeing there is primer, not a plastic cover. As you know, primer is used to get paint to bond to aluminum, which is what we used for the G5's body. The aluminum alloy we sourced is known as LM201b (patent pending) and was developed at the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology for use in automobiles and aircraft. LM201b, unlike the aluminum used in other smartphones, is diecast unibody which makes it very sturdy while still maintaining lightweight properties. We figured out a way to integrate the antenna bands into the aluminum seamlessly so you can't feel the lines and covered the LM201b with primer and paint using a process called microdizing which means that tiny particles of metal are infused in the coating and bonded to the aluminum. I think it's incorrect to say that a product isn't all metal if paint is involved. That's like saying cars and airplanes aren't metal because they're also painted. For the record, even metal that's anodized will scratch off. Our process may be different but it achieved what we were aiming for, which is a smooth, seamless metal finish that's durable and lightweight. We weren't interested in doing what has already been done. When did this become a bad thing?

      +Ken Hong Hey Ken, I ment no harm with the video. I understand that a lot of work and planning went into this phone. You are right it *IS* different. Normally when a company advertises a 'metal phone' the metal part is on the outside. And that is what i personally was expecting. (As well as many other people.) Primer does not feel the same as metal. It is just an unfortunate side effect of using primer. I would be more than happy to make a follow up video explaining the your process more in depth and what makes your system 'better' than other flagships. Ill even fly out at my own expense to do the filming. You'll need a pretty good argument though... to make up for the misunderstood advertising about the whole phone being metal. My email can be found in the 'about' section of my RUclips channel page. I look forward to talking with you, and I am not looking for compensation. I like to remain completely unbiased.

    • @visitken

      +JerryRigEverything Thanks for the offer and we'll definitely consider it. For the record, none of the advertised claims behind G5 were inaccurate. All we have ever claimed is that the G5 features a metal uni-body, nothing more, nothing less. Some people have a tendency to assume certain things (such as metal having to make contact with skin for a product to be considered made of metal) which is unfortunate and we chose not to play that game. And nowhere on the G5 does the primer touch skin so whatever side effects there may be, it's due to something other than the primer.
      Great RUclips channel, by the way.

      Oh I see. So basically what you're saying is that Primer is a material which is Commonly called "base coat" is used here. It also acts as a adhesive for the paint and the metal you're using it on. It feels like hard rubber like plastic. May I know whether this also prevents phones for minor scratches and damage when the phone is dropped. I am considering buying the LG G5. Thanks in advance.

    I Know that most people are disappointed with the build quality and everything but i really like the fact that this phone is very easy to fix even the charging port can be easily changed.
    Awesome video by the way :)

      @johansteyn3756 8 лет назад +6

      +Abu Khalid This is a huge advantage. The S7 is almost unfixable. I work on my own phones and this is so easy. Charge ports can damage easily. Samsung wanted to charge me about $180 to replace my Note 3's charge port, which you can buy for $7 or less.

    • @baverfjant
      @baverfjant 2 года назад

      Was the build quality actually bad? Took me 3,5 years for something to break on my LG G5. And that was after I woke up and forgot about having the charger plugged in, so when I yanked I lost grip of the phone and it flew across the room. Glass on the cameras cracked, can still take pictures but a crack is right over the lens and messes it up quite a bit. Still have it as a backup just in case.

    The fact that the battery is replaceable along with the charging port makes me want to consider this phone over the s7! Of course Usb type C > Usb type B, but the fact that the charger port is replaceable without a heat gun sounds appealing as well.

  • @EricaGriffin
    @EricaGriffin 8 лет назад +36

    aha! I knew it was plastic overlaid on top. ***My guess is that they wanted the phone design to look seamless. Clearly, with this modular phone they needed to figure out how to get the mechanism to work and how to make sure the thing gets reception...in comes plastic pieces along the back cover at the top, and sides. Then for the bottom, they must have known they needed a plastic mechanism. Then to make sure everything looked seamless and like it was made with the same material they capped it off with a veneer of plastic. An then they further added insult to injury by coating it with a metallic paint. The thought process probably went something like that I am guessing...***

    PD: The main rear camera is 8MP, the wide-angled is 8MP. But really, I would wish that the wide angles were as good as the main, because those wide-angle photos looks so great.

    g5 is the best of 2016. s7's back glass protection is bad, mine has been broken. Direct touch with metal feels hot, a coating is not that bad.

  • @syr2000

    I dropped my G5 from half a meter to the ground and it not only got dented, which is something you would expect from an alluminium body, but the coating peeled off exaggeratedly. I don't like to use cases, but you will need one if you have a G5.
    But I'm glad to see that changing the back cover is a pretty easy job.

  • @Altawer
    @Altawer 7 лет назад

    If you're using this for screen replacement: Remember to take from the old frame: 1. A piece of rubber lifting the proximity sensor 2. A white sticker that dims the notification LED 3 A metal piece close to the volume buttons
    Put all of that on the new frame and you're good to go.

    Jerry,
    thank you for your unbiased reviews they allow better decisions to be made on buying phones, looking at the construction of this phone it is a no brainer to shop else where.
    Ken, makes a point but marketing speech is marketing speech and all it sounds same on this end, as a cover for the underlying issue of poor choice of words for description of the device and covering their own butts on the matter. Disappointing, however it looks like LG took a risk which i like, however its the first iteration and it needs some work i look forward to the future devices but for now the premium feel of the Samsung phone (s7) is worth the money accompanied by the features makes it seem like an overall better phone, of course in my opinion.

    Still using my G5 today... Had an S8 for a while but I smashed the screen and can't justify spending £150~ to get a new one. Hey-ho.
    Though, something you may like Jerry... I completely sanded my G5 to the bare metal, actually looks pretty damn cool! Antenna bands on show n' all. Does have some weird plastic dovetail clips at the bottom though, between the rear of the removable chin and the main body.

    Thanks for the tutorial. My insurance wanted a $200.00 deductible to fix a broken screen, by giving me a new phone. The hell with that. I went to the link and bought a new screen with frame along with the tool kit. Cost me great deal less and it was a snap to replace. One word of warning: The new screen does NOT come with the ear speaker... After I turned the phone back on, everything seemed fine until I got a phone call. Silence. I had no idea what was happening, so I took the phone apart again and discovered the missing speaker. Luckily, it's modular like everything else and I was able to pop the one on the broken screen and pop it into the new one. Problem solved.

    This was almost what I was looking for. I have this phone and still use it in 2020 because my Moto Z Force 2 popped it's screen off when the batter swole up, and now I get get the replacement batteries to stay connected.
    After that, I swore to never have a phone with a battery that can't be easily removed and replaced again.
    My LG G5 has already been worth it that department, My OEM battery started swelling inside of to where I needed pliers to get it out.
    But once it was out, new battery and I was back in business.
    Sadly, I dropped it about a month ago, and not the power button on the back doesn't work.
    The screen s fine, and I use the Camera add on control to get into the phone, but I was really hoping for some more indite into that, as THAT is what had broken on mine.

    the g5 is good on the paper. in real life its another thing. the home button on the backside was defective within 9 month after purchase, warranty repair took 6 weeks and then it broke again after a month. screen backlight bleeding became an issue after 6 months, what i mean is, that if u stay on a bright screen for a couple of seconds and then switch to a darker page, you will see the brighter on in the background. another thing is gps, wasnt usable after a year, finding the position takes forever and so navigating with it isnt possible. and a couple days ago, it just wouldnt turn on, it was my second battery (original) and I tested even another charging module. GG
    you wont ever get me again LG

    Thanks for the video, Jerry. Pretty amusing to see the real truth after reading LG's misleading promotional material. Also, very disappointing that LG didn't even bother to include wireless charging coil - they could've made the "cutout" for it in their metal foil frame, then cover it all up with their plastic coating and the phone would've still felt and looked EXACTLY as it does now but would've had at least ONE useful, non-gimmick feature ;-)

    Thanks for the great breakdown vid. IMHO phone weight or temperature as in metal, glass, plastic when holding a phone does not define this iphone coined premium feel thing we hear way too much. Ergonomics power and function defines premium. The lighter the phone the better. Less weight with strength applies to all other performance areas like race cars. I'd rather hold a big phone that weighed as little as possible anyway.

    Honestly, I don't understand why LG uses a false marketing campaign. I like their effort and the company is capable of producing some great phones but misleading consumers with "all-metal" design is unfair.

    • @EsqChrio
      @EsqChrio 8 лет назад +5

      +TechLineHD I guess using LG's logic...all phones are "all-metal" if you dig deep enough.

      +TechLineHD It is all metal. Pain primer and metal not plastic. LG already address the misconception.

    I'll take the G5 a few months after release for like 60% discount, same as I did with G4. Features are killer on LG flagships, but the premium feel is lacking (again with the G5 obviously). I'll happily pay 60% less than competitors with equal screen/camera performance etc etc. Materials and feel are important when your paying retail price, but at heavy discounts they become less of a concern.

    • @THESMAG96

      +Anthony Andrades the lg g5 will get cheaper quicker than other phone manufacturers. I will buy this phone later on over the smasug gs7 because it is easy to repair.

  • @NeXMaX
    @NeXMaX 8 лет назад

    Jerry, you should probably shave off the metallic coating off the entire back of the G5.
    LG said that the plastic parts are antenna bands. I wanna know just how much plastic is there.

    • @johansteyn3756
      @johansteyn3756 8 лет назад

      +D13H4RD2L1V3 Nope, they did not say it is the antenna lines. They said that it was used to cover the antenna lines. They uniformly covered the phone with this.

  • @DrumNTech

    Just a correction: The wide angle lens has the 8 MP sensor. The 16 MP sensor has the regular lens.

  • @DarthProlif
    @DarthProlif 8 лет назад +1

    Got quite a few things wrong in this video, the 8MP cam is the wide angle lens. And that's not plastic, it's primer, you can just slap paint on aluminum without primer.

    • @JerryRigEverything
      @JerryRigEverything  8 лет назад +1

      +DarthHeretic Primer doesn't need to be that thick. Ever scrape you car on accident? All cars have primer. The primer on the G5 is being used to cover antenna's. Which is fine... just most people expected a solid metal phone when that is what LG advertised. As a side note, metal primer is made up of 30% synthetic resin.... which is plastic. Either way, its all just fancy terminology for a phone with a non-metal exterior.

    • @DarthProlif
      @DarthProlif 8 лет назад

      JerryRigEverything it's 20-30% plastic in the primer, calling primer plastic is wrong so saying its the same thing as plastic is totally incorrect and misleading to viewers.

    • @DarthProlif
      @DarthProlif 8 лет назад

      JerryRigEverything The phones body doesn't even act like plastic, and feels nothing like plastic.
      Wanna say LG is wrong? Then go ahead and try to take them to court just to see if they're wrong. My money's on LG winning, though.

    • @JerryRigEverything
      @JerryRigEverything  8 лет назад

      DarthHeretic Eh, most of the time I say it feels like plastic. Which it does. Watch other unboxings man. I'm not the only one. Either way, the phone has a non metal exterior.

    • @DarthProlif
      @DarthProlif 8 лет назад

      JerryRigEverything It does not feel like plastic, it acts nothing like plastic. Not once have I woke up to a phone made of full plastic materials and have a cold to the touch feel. This phone feels cold to the touch every morning.
      Does it feel like pure metal? No, but it does feel like metal that has been painted over and it is just that.
      This is like saying a car or a metal house isn't metal because of the primer being on the car/house. No, it's metal, just with a coat of primer. Is the coat thick on the G5? sure, but not as thick as everyone is making it out to be.

    Hey Jerry, great video.
    I was wondering if you could help me with a mod question. I fly drones using 5G wifi,
    however my signal crashes around the 70m mark,
    yet the drone I use is supposed to have around the 400m capability,
    So I was wondering if you could tell me where the ariel is in the G% and how i could fit an r sma lead to it so i could add a directional beam ariel or even a yagi.
    Or better still is there some sort of wifi antenna that i could connect wirelessly to without having to strip down my lg g5?
    cheers

    Hey Zack does it bootloop like the G4?
    From what I've understood it's a hardware issue due to having the memory poorly soldered on top of the processor (weirdly enough) which causes the soldering to chip off when the processor heats up. Is there a chance of a similar thing to happen on the G5?

    @JerryRigEverything, I have the LS992 (Sprint model) that I got Sprint to unlock. I got this phone cheap and my intent was to only use it for travel. What I would like to do is use two SIMs at once. I'd like to use my Sprint SIM and Latin American SIM so I can make and receive calls from both countries in one phone. Unfortunately the Sprint model only receives a single SIM. I bought the SIM tray that holds dual SIMs but the reader still does not read the 2nd SIM. Do you think I can swap the SIM reader on this phone and get both SIMs functioning? Thanks in advance!

    I got the replacement screen assembly from your link, but one of the components I was expecting to be present on the new assembly isn't -- I think it's a speaker, it's the rectangular metallic component just to the left of where the rear cameras attach. I can't find a way to remove it from the old screen assembly so I can move it over. Can you help?

  • @NitroGuyJH
    @NitroGuyJH 6 лет назад

    Actually if you remove the battery and look inside the phone at the very bottom left corner there is a tiny hole in the black plastic. That hole is there for a reason. Take a paper clip with a small hook bent in the end and insert it into the hole, pull firmly and it will unlock the slide lock and the phone will separate with minimal force. Literally...

    Ouch. That sound of razor peeling off the coating is really painful. To the ears, eyes and the soul. Maybe the plastic on top is to keep the heat off from spreading quickly because all metal will surely get hot all over and putting plastic layer over it could cover the heat
