Wow! We get dredgers every 2 years or so that clear Brookings Harbor, and our beach is then replenished with sand. Really fun to watch too. But an ice breaker is something else again. Thanks for the video!
This is the Mackinaw, and progress must go on, but her predecessor will forever be the "Big Mac" to many of us who live on/around the Great Lakes. I'm glad they made WAGB-83 a museum ship. That ship and her crews did decades of work keeping the various shipping channels open.
"Securi-tay, securi-tay, securi-tay." Thank you Mackinaw for keeping the Twin Ports open. And for removing that pesky ice house that was blocking ship traffic.
I am so surprised by this season's lake behavior-so much calm water as compared to previous years. No wonder the ice is forming so quickly. Paul, do you remember a year of calm lake behavior like this year?? Ten years ago??
Specifically, I do not. The weather patterns do seem to Ebb and Flow quite a bit, it was a pretty calm December and January is pretty calm so far as well. I was shocked when the Canal had a skim ice cover on it a bit back! that usually only happens in February.
@PaulScinocca I agree. Thanks for answering my question, because I am guessing others familiar with the Lake also noted it's 'odd' behavior this shipping season.
Not feeling a lot of love for Mackinaw. Is there bad blood here? I would imagine there is a lot of great lakes politics, schedules, cargo priorities, berthing docks, that sort of thing. An economy within an economy? I'm an inlander so I can only speculate.
The Mackinaw crew must not watch your videos. You don’t do the captains salute before you get in the canal. Bad form. Good horn though for a puddle jumper.
The USCGC Mackinaw knows how important it is to keep the Twin Ports open so Paul can record his awesome videos...⚓📣
Among other things, too. 👍🏼🇺🇸
LOL, yup, all for me......🤣

Yes, the WAGB-83 is a great part of maritime history.
She's a beauty, Paul! I've never seen the lake water so calm. Excellent post, as usual. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.

Indeed!
Great Video I Enjoyed it😊

The Mighty Mac has a buoy boom, looks like one, been there done that.
Indeed! Multi-function ship for sure!
Does anyone know why Spar and Mackinaw swapped territory?
Spar can't handle the ice to the level the Mackinaw can - Spar will probably be back at the close of navigation.

LOL< definitely a good "tooter" on the ship though!
