Eating healthily according to your metabolism rate and amount of exercise you do is the key. My whole life I have been pretty much able to eat whatever I wanted and not put on weight, my junk food intake is minimal, I probably eat out once a month and have takeaway once a month, in fact I was in my forties before I ever passed through the door of a KFC joint and only then because my children felt they were being deprived! I know I was fortunate but from 18 years old until my mid 40's I was a constant weight and waist size!!! Then I noticed my waistline creeping up from a 30" to 32" to 34" when ordering work trousers, initially I thought it was a change in the manufactures used, then I weighed myself, something I hadn't done in twenty years and the truth dawned I was putting on weight. Basically my metabolism has slowed down with middle age and I now have to monitor what I eat and if I want to consume more I have to exercise more. One thing I have noticed over the years when eating in other peoples houses is, bigger dinner plates generally equals "bigger" people.... At some point you are going to have to rethink your whole approach to diet, food quantity and lifestyle to find a balance that helps you maintain that "house" you are building, even consult a professional. I'm glad to see the back is getting better,
Hey 2nd Chance, as Ksenia said you can eat a lot of food, but if you eat vegetables first and pretty much only you can lose a lot of weight. Just whole foods-potatoes can be the filling food. Exercise is great, of course, but healthy eating is primary. I am loving eating whole foods-I'm a big food addict, but fruits (sometimes dates) keep my sweet tooth happy. Its the only way I lose weight. Combined with hiking-wow, GG Bridge is the best bridge ever, you probably saw it in fog, & the other in sun, That wasn't fair!
I am glad you are feeling better. You're far from done. As soon as you can get back fully ...do it. Change your life forever. I am proud of how far you've come.
5 steps forward, 1 back. Great perspective, but make sure those steps take you away from your favourite take-away joint. Blackberries and salmon are the best take out snacks, bears agree. I'm so glad your back is feeling better and you are feeling healthy. Nice views of the Columbia Fiver. Happy trails Corey and keep on singing.
That was epic! I have not seen any other PCT hikers film that bridge hike! It made my heart pound just watching it! I'm so glad we all made it off safe & sound! Love you!
Congratulations on the positive mental attitude, you know what they say " motivate the mind, and the body will follow " It's great to see you feeling better!!!
Another very good video. My wife and I are doing the 6 pack of peaks of SoCal. Two weeks ago we did San Jacinto from humber park (Idylwild) you were a subject of conversation. This Saturday it's Baden-Powell's turn. We'll take you along in our conversation's. "Hiker trash til the ash!" That's our motto.
Hungry is your friend. Embrace it, love it. Let your body and mind get used to it. Your appetite will ‘shrink’. You will be amazed at how your body and mind adapts in just a week. Give it a month. We do not need all the food we eat. That is why even the skinny person puts on weight later in life. Match your food consumption to your lifestyle. Sweet and Sugar is your enemy. Glucose high tricks your body into storing fat, makes you more hungry.
You need to go walk the Mackinac Bridge some Labor Day (the only day each year they allow pedestrians) a nice 5 mile stroll. Keep on stepping Cory, keep on stepping. Yes you are correct it is a mindset!!
Processed food is also horrible. I had someone tell me to just get the goods from the outer rim of the grocery store and whole grains like oatmeal and but some nuts. I would lose weight. It's hard for me. I've lose 60+ pounds go to the gym and it doesn't get easier. Blackberries are all over Missouri
👍 For sure Rogue , Choosing good foods and eating healthy is definitely a challenge , store shelves full of so many processed things loaded with useless fillers.
Hello my hiking friend, thank you for sharing this fine video. This is the best footage yet of the Bridge of the Gods. Please take good care out there. All the best to you and the Little Bee. 🤗
Nice video man. It's always great to see you on the trail. I think you figured out your success for the future by continuing to move. That might take different shapes but it appears you have a true joy when you hike. So, maybe that will be your primary exercise, post trail. Continued success.
How cool there is free camping just downriver from the Bridge, It was one of my favorite camps when I visited Oregon! Congrats to Little Bee and to you.
I watched Teal Swan’s Video about obesity and losing weight and why we have the extra pounds and what she said is how we see ourselves and whatever bad things happened to us can cause us to hold on to weight. So you are right that skinny people eat more than you do, i have that issue as well. I don’t eat nearly as much as most fit people, but I have all this extra weight holding me down. It’s like armor, protecting me from getting hurt. Exercise does help, in more ways than just Burning calories. Feeling good and working toward goals is a big part of getting out of that cycle of apathy that can cause a person to dwell on their problems, become depressed and gain more weight.
The Bridge of The Gods!! Thank you for the reminder! The book Wild inspired me to hike ❤️Planned a 2020 AT SOBO thru but postponed until 2021. You sir have inspired me to hike the PCT after! Thank you for your inspiration 🏆
Glad your back is getting better and getting back to thru hiking is near. You are awesome! Walking on that bridge is freaky with the traffic and open floor. Running into that local market must have been great! I bet that smoked fish tasted amazing!
Best video! So good to see you feeling healthy, getting rid of the back pain! With a positive outlook! Awesome! OMG, that salmon looked delicious! I was recently hiking in Kyrgyzstan. I'm 50. I use an app to have an idea of km done, altitude done, calories burned... the app never said more than 3000 Kcal in a day, even when I did 30 km with 2000 m climb. I think it isn't realistic to imagine to burn 10000 kcal a day with exercise, unless you're climbing K2 with a lot of gear on your back. That's why it is important to deal with our food addictions. Tame them little by little. Also, if we trust physical activity to keep your weight down, you'll eventually hurt yourself by doing too much, too often, and be forced to rest, take many days off. And the weight will be gained back. It has to be two-sided: physical activity and portion control, or any other healthy way to control what you eat. When we lose weight, we also burn less, because basal metabolism depends on our masses. This may all seem grim, but my intention is the best possible. You're in a perfect situation to change the way you eat, because you're outdoors, being distracted by working on videos, nature beauty, meeting people. Much easier to deal with temptation than when alone, home, bad weather outside. Remember you've got this. It's a matter of adjusting things, thinking things, training yourself to better habits. With all you've accomplished so far... you can do it! Lose the weight AND keep it off. You are strong, young, loved. You can do anything! It isn't easy. But you've proven you can do it!
Smoked fish is so tasty, the local farmers market does hot smoke salmon, trout and herring in a big wooden cut down barrel covered with hessian sacks, served hot at point of source the herring (Arbroath Smokies) are hard to beat! Usually ask the vendor for extra bones with my orders to make fish stock for Cullen Skink later in the week, just watching the video had me smelling and tasting it....
Himalayan blackberries are so prominent in this area it's a nuisance. Super invasive non-native plant. There are native varieties, but they're not as common.
PNW Smoked Salmon!? Yes, Please! I can't imagine a better trail food.Except for free Wild blackberries! Mid August is the perfect time for blackberry picking in WA. Congrats on WA! I know you will fall in love with it!

Congrats on Bridge of the Gods! It was beautiful seeing the views over the sides. And smoked salmon! Yum! That was kind of you to leave a tip. So much work goes into catching, cleaning and preparing the fish, that they deserve every penny they earn. Good job. 👍
What a great day for you and Little Bee 🐝 ♥️. Life Is a Backroad the reason it is called the bridge of the gods is because of the native Americans from the area have a legend talked of a land bridge that crossed the river at the location. Try googling it.
